@MaVolta Right? I still call one of my neighbors Mrs. Stone. I don't know I even know her first name. And I house sat for her before she retired.

Mr. Whoseit and Mrs. Whatsit

 

When I was growing up, all adults were called Mr. and Mrs. by youngsters (also obsolete), but also by other adults. You had to be really good friends or relatives to call someone by their first name.

When I was a child, I remember adults using the phrase "Well I'll swunny".  To this day, I have no idea how to "swunny," but I guess it was more polite than saying "swear".
