My first car a 1967 GTO convertible. Light blue with a white convertible top and white interior. 400 cu inch V-8. Fully stocked with fun and action.

Man back in the day that car was a chick magnet when we cruised E. 14th Street in San Leandro, California. I could barely afford gas for it back then when it was 20 cents a gallon. Imagine with that V-8 today and the price of fuel. No way I could afford it today either. But sure wish I had that car to drive now.

See how cars have changed over the years in How Car Design Has Evolved.

Which of these cars do you remember?

My first car was a used '68 Chevy Chevelle.  It was blue and long and all metal.  Oh, how I loved that car.   I mainly loved it 'cause it was my first.  I had saved my summer job earnings to buy that car and I drove it everywhere.  It was a great ride all through the fall,  but by winter it stopped and then I was back to being a hoofer because I didn't have the money or the know-how to fix it.  But it sure was fun while it lasted!

I thought I was the most fortunate teenager ever!!! On graduation day my Dad took me to a small local used car lot and told me I was going to get a car!

This was the first I heard of me getting my own car.

There were 6 cars in all. My Dad did what men did back then. Look closely down the sides for any bodywork, rust, and whatever else. Then he announced

I could pick between two that he thought was in the best shape. A WHITE MUSTANG WITH A RED INTERIOR. (It was ok.) OR A YELLOW AND BLACK CHEVY MALIBU CONVERTIBLE. OH MY GOSH IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?

I chose the convertible, naturally, what 17 yr old wouldn't? And that was 1 of 2 cars I would buy used, from then on I bought new.

It was great to share this fond memory with fellow AARP members.

What was your first car?  Love to hear about the different cars everyone first owned

Mine was a '62 Chevy Impala, 2 door hardtop. Forgot if it was SS, don't think so.  Light , light yellow.  Paid $1,200.00 in '69.  Wish I still had it.   Just had a 283 ,  whatever that means.  I am a lady, so don't know that much about cars. Well, i know a little actually, as my husband taught me about cars...even helped him work on.

A lot of good memories,  still have a picture...

Had a blue on blue 1980 Chevrolet Chevette Hatchback for ten (10) years. It served me well through college days, working at SAFECO Insurance Companies before selling it for a brand new Boyensberry blue 1997 Ford Escort LX before going into semi-retirement in 1999.

Actually my first car was a red '63 Nova coupe but back then I was a teen (naive) my father took ADVANTAGE of me by having it in his name on title.

Of course he didn't give me the car title upon being 21 years old myself (legal in Washington State).

Now that I'm older and wiser.... Have everything in my NAME on legal paperwork, title, etc!

I had a 1949 Ford with a steel pipe to keep the driver's seat upright so I could reach the gas pedle and brakes. I did not have air condition and very hard to turn. We worked driving to get where we had to go.

I took it to school in High School and taught the nuns how to drive so they could get there driving lic.

Good times back then.

A British Racing Green Triumph Stag convertible.  I spent more time under the hood than in the driver's seat but it was a lot of fun
