Re: Do You Play the Lottery?

I agree that the odds are ridiculous but it’s fun to purchase, especially when the winnings are in the millions!   I don’t like gambling at all, I’m talking playing quarters in Tahoe, no free drinks for us, haha...

And I wonder what the records show for a huge group winning over a single person?  Anyhoo, remember, SOMEONE has to win, and we all have the same odds??

Never!  The odds of winning are so astronomically high that you are more likely to be struck by lightning.  Furthermore, you must pay administrative fees as well as taxes on the winnings to the Feds and most States, and everyone and their brother will be at your door with their hand out.  The worst situation would be to win X-thousand dollars per week for life.  The vast majority of people would never save some money each month for a huge tax hit when they file and have no witholdings, and no recourse other than asking for a loan at their local bank and pay it back with next years winnings.  Better to put that money away.  Anywhere, even in a mattress, not in the lottery.

I have been known to go to the casino a few times.  I never let it get out of hand due to watching my MOM lose her home to gambling.  It was so sad when they put a Casino just a few miles from her house.  She said she couldn't drive after dark but...never minded driving to the Casino.  She had my Dad convinced that she was way ahead of the game, when she wrote HOT checks to gamble!!  Even after she passed away he got a bill from a credit card (that was supposed to be for extreme emergency's) she had charged $5,000 to gamble!!  Once and awhile she might win a big one, that is how she convinced him that she was way ahead of the game!!!!!  Sad.  Then she found out she could gamble on line with her computer.  But...if I could have her back I would let her gamble her heart away.  I miss her so much!!

I never could understand the fun in the lottery. Even Bingo is more fun than that. What's so fun about watching a random number-generator spit out it's result? I'd rather watch the grass grow. At least you know it's not dieing, or losing money on it.

I have played the lottery many times. That was when i had money to spare. My husband and i played with my co-workers and with his co-workers the most we one was 40 dollars and we put that money back in the lottery the next week. I will play for fun if I have the money.

I do play a certain amount each month on lottery tickets.   Someone once told me, "Don't plan your life on winning the lottery, but it doesn't hurt to play a ticket or two now & then."     I have won some small prizes here & there & it is fun to dream about winning the big jackpot.    I rarely go to casinos to gamble & I figure $20.00 a month is not going to break me.   Like anything else in life, moderation is the key.

I don't play the lottery. I figure I could get the same end result in my checking account by rolling down my car window and throwing money out the window. Someone else would be happy to find it. But, that seems very inefficient.

Instead, like some others here, I save that money so I can invest in my retirement accounts. Except for the past week's corrections, I have done quite well with my accounts there and I know I made much more money that way than the occasional scratch-off win would have provided.

That said, I will enter online sweepstakes (for websites where I have already chosen to share my information) but those are free. I have occasionally won something that way -- including a $10 VISA gift card from a Sprite.com drawing today!!!

Yes Powerball and Megamillions. I know the odds are extreme but there is a little excitement in the chance of winning. Everybody dreams of living their lives without a care in the world but in reality the winnings would bring more confusion to your life. The thought of winning for me is how much good I could do for my family and being able to give back.

I use to spend almost $80.00 a month on lottery tickets. Now I put that money into a mutual fund. I have over $10,000.00 in my account. More then I have ever made on the lottery and a better return !
