Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’

The president has repeatedly disparaged the intelligence of service members, and asked that wounded veterans be kept out of military parades, multiple sources tell The Atlantic.

When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.

Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.

Belleau Wood is a consequential battle in American history, and the ground on which it was fought is venerated by the Marine Corps. America and its allies stopped the German advance toward Paris there in the spring of 1918. But Trump, on that same trip, asked aides, “Who were the good guys in this war?” He also said that he didn’t understand why the United States would intervene on the side of the Allies.

Trump’s understanding of concepts such as patriotism, service, and sacrifice has interested me since he expressed contempt for the war record of the late Senator John McCain, who spent more than five years as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. “He’s not a war hero,” Trump said in 2015 while running for the Republican nomination for president. “I like people who weren’t captured.”

There was no precedent in American politics for the expression of this sort of contempt, but the performatively patriotic Trump did no damage to his candidacy by attacking McCain in this manner. Nor did he set his campaign back by attacking the parents of Humayun Khan, an Army captain who was killed in Iraq in 2004.

Trump remained fixated on McCain, one of the few prominent Republicans to continue criticizing him after he won the nomination. When McCain died, in August 2018, Trump told his senior staff, according to three sources with direct knowledge of this event, “We’re not going to support that loser’s funeral,” and he became furious, according to witnesses, when he saw flags lowered to half-staff. “What the **bleep** are we doing that for? Guy was a **bleep**ing loser,” the president told aides.

Trump was not invited to McCain’s funeral. (These sources, and others quoted in this article, spoke on condition of anonymity. The White House did not return earlier calls for comment, but Alyssa Farah, a White House spokesperson, emailed me this statement shortly after this story was posted: “This report is false. President Trump holds the military in the highest regard. He’s demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much needed pay raise, increasing military spending, signing critical veterans reforms, and supporting military spouses. This has no basis in fact.”)

Trump’s understanding of heroism has not evolved since he became president. According to sources with knowledge of the president’s views, he seems to genuinely not understand why Americans treat former prisoners of war with respect. Nor does he understand why pilots who are shot down in combat are honored by the military. On at least two occasions since becoming president, according to three sources with direct knowledge of his views, Trump referred to former President George H. W. Bush as a “loser” for being shot down by the Japanese as a Navy pilot in World War II. (Bush escaped capture, but eight other men shot down during the same mission were caught, tortured, and executed by Japanese soldiers.)

When lashing out at critics, Trump often reaches for illogical and corrosive insults, and members of the Bush family have publicly opposed him. But his cynicism about service and heroism extends even to the World War I dead buried outside Paris—people who were killed more than a quarter century before he was born. Trump finds the notion of military service difficult to understand, and the idea of volunteering to serve especially incomprehensible. (The president did not serve in the military; he received a medical deferment from the draft during the Vietnam War because of the alleged presence of bone spurs in his feet. In the 1990s, Trump said his efforts to avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases constituted his “personal Vietnam.”)

“He can’t fathom the idea of doing something for someone other than himself,” one of Kelly’s friends, a retired four-star general, told me. “He just thinks that anyone who does anything when there’s no direct personal gain to be had is a sucker. There’s no money in serving the nation.” Kelly’s friend went on to say, “Trump can’t imagine anyone else’s pain. That’s why he would say this to the father of a fallen marine on Memorial Day in the cemetery where he’s buried.”

I’ve asked numerous general officers over the past year for their analysis of Trump’s seeming contempt for military service. They offer a number of explanations. Some of his cynicism is rooted in frustration, they say. Trump, unlike previous presidents, tends to believe that the military, like other departments of the federal government, is beholden only to him, and not the Constitution.

Many senior officers have expressed worry about Trump’s understanding of the rules governing the use of the armed forces. This issue came to a head in early June, during demonstrations in Washington, D.C., in response to police killings of Black people. James Mattis, the retired Marine general and former secretary of defense, lambasted Trump at the time for ordering law-enforcement officers to forcibly clear protesters from Lafayette Square, and for using soldiers as props: “When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution,” Mattis wrote. “Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.”

Another explanation is more quotidian, and aligns with a broader understanding of Trump’s material-focused worldview. The president believes that nothing is worth doing without the promise of monetary payback, and that talented people who don’t pursue riches are “losers.” (According to eyewitnesses, after a White House briefing given by the then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joe Dunford, Trump turned to aides and said, “That guy is smart. Why did he join the military?”)

Yet another, related, explanation concerns what appears to be Trump’s pathological fear of appearing to look like a “sucker” himself. His capacious definition of sucker includes those who lose their lives in service to their country, as well as those who are taken prisoner, or are wounded in battle. “He has a lot of fear,” one officer with firsthand knowledge of Trump’s views said. “He doesn’t see the heroism in fighting.” Several observers told me that Trump is deeply anxious about dying or being disfigured, and this worry manifests itself as disgust for those who have suffered.

Trump recently claimed that he has received the bodies of slain service members “many, many” times, but in fact he has traveled to Dover Air Force Base, the transfer point for the remains of fallen service members, only four times since becoming president. In another incident, Trump falsely claimed that he had called “virtually all” of the families of service members who had died during his term, then began rush-shipping condolence letters when families said the president was not telling the truth.

Trump has been, for the duration of his presidency, fixated on staging military parades, but only of a certain sort. In a 2018 White House planning meeting for such an event, Trump asked his staff not to include wounded veterans, on grounds that spectators would feel uncomfortable in the presence of amputees. “Nobody wants to see that,” he said.

Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’

Republicans embrace this man and want him to lead them for FOUR MORE years.

Killed US Military are Losers & Suckers

When I was a child every male adult, except for my father who was crippled by polio, served in the military during WWII.  My wife's father,  family friends, seven uncles.

Battle of the Bulge, D day,  Guadalcanal,  most of them wouldn't talk about it.  I still have an Uncle lost in the ice and snow somewhere in Greenland.

That was really hard on my Grandmother.

Kids I grew up with went to Vietnam.

They weren't losers or suckers.

Actual losers, like Trump, are free today because of their service.

President Trump has been 100% HONEST in his dislike for McCain long before THIS NONSENSE!  He isn't the only one that didn't care for McCain.  Disliking ONE veteran does not mean he doesn't respect AND support them. Give the truth a break!  He has proven his support for our Veterans, and THAT is what is important.

The above-displayed meme did not specify a specific state or branch of government, implying all Democrats were responsible for the actions in question; however, the first claim in the meme (“Democrats killed a bill for tuition assistance for children of veterans killed in battle”) was similar to one we rated “True” in April 2019 as it pertained to New York state.

And regarding that bill, “killed,” as the meme stated, is a strong word in this context, given that similar legislation was still listed as in committee and potentially set to take effect April 1, 2020, at the time of this writing. However, it’s true that in 2019 Democrats in a committee of the state New York Assembly voted to block a bill expanding the state’s tuition aid program covering so-called “Gold Star” families, defined as immediate relatives of service members who “lost their lives while engaged in hostilities, as a result of an international terrorist attack, or under certain other circumstances.” The bill proposed offering “free tuition” not just to Gold Star families but also to dependent family of service members who died while performing official military duties.

To be clear: The blocked bill proposed expanding the state’s Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive and Tribute (MERIT) scholarship program to include family members of those killed or disabled in non-combat situations. The MERIT program already provides tuition and other assistance to family members of military personnel killed or disabled while engaged in (or training for) hostilities.

In other words, the children of someone “killed in battle,” as the meme put it, would seem to qualify for the existing tuition-assistance program. The proposed extension of funding would have also covered family members who were killed or disabled while not in combat.

It should be noted for what reason the Democrats stopped the bill. According to Newsday:

Democrats said they did not support the Republican proposal because it was released after legislators passed the state’s $175 billion budget April 1, [2019], meaning it would have no source of funding even if it were signed into law.

Democratic legislators said their college aid proposal would go into effect April 1, 2020, presumably giving lawmakers time to include additional spending for military family scholarships in next year’s budget.

Not wanting to wait, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, announced a plan on April 17, 2019, to immediately grant tuition assistance to family members of all New York service members who were killed while performing any official duties, effectively providing a stop-gap until the new legislation took effect in 2020.

So while Democrats did indeed block a tuition-assistance bill for families of service members who were killed or disabled outside of combat, this applied only in New York state and tuition assistance remained available to families of service members who were killed or disabled while in service.

Jennifer Griffin defended by Fox News colleagues after Trump Twitter attack over confirmation of Atlantic reporting

Jennifer Griffin caused an unexpected media firestorm Friday when she did something fairly routine for a reporter: A competitor had broken a story on her beat, so she set out to see whether she could match it.

In this case, it was the Atlantic’s blockbuster report that President Trump had made disparaging remarks about veterans. Griffin, a national security correspondent for Fox News, found sources to validate key aspects of the story, sharing her reporting on Twitter and on anchor Bret Baier’s news show.

Other beat reporters had confirmed aspects of the Atlantic story, too. But the fact that Griffin works for Fox, whose opinion hosts and corporate owners are seen as reliable supporters and defenders of the president, turned her revelations into a watershed development. It led to Trump’s call for her firing late Friday on Twitter — and an impassioned pushback from Fox News colleagues defending her journalistic honor.

In a nine-tweet thread Friday afternoon, Griffin cited two unnamed former senior administration officials who she said confirmed for her many key aspects of Atlantic Editor in Chief Jeffrey Goldberg’s story about Trump’s cancellation of a trip to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery while visiting Paris in 2018.

“According to one former senior Trump administration official: ‘When the President spoke about the Vietnam War, he said, ‘It was a stupid war. Anyone who went was a sucker,’ ” she wrote. “When asked IF the President could have driven to the Aisne-Marne Cemetery, this former official said confidently: ‘The President drives a lot. The other world leaders drove to the cemeteries. He just didn’t want to go.’ ”

Later, she noted on Baier’s “Special Report” show that she was unable to confirm “the most salacious allegation,” in Goldberg’s story, “that the president described the American war dead at the Aisne-Marne Cemetery as ‘suckers’ and ‘losers.’ ”

The Fix’s Aaron Blake analyzes what President Trump has allegedly said about fallen troops and how those statements echo previous comments by the president. (JM Rieger/The Washington Post)

Just before midnight Friday, the president shared a Breitbart.com story about Griffin’s reporting and said, “Jennifer Griffin should be fired for this kind of reporting. Never even called us for comment. @FoxNews is gone!”

Before the president took aim at her reporting, Griffin took veiled shots from some of her colleagues, most notably contributor Mollie Hemingway, a senior editor for the Federalist. After Fox News national correspondent Jacqui Heinrich shared Griffin’s reporting, Hemingway wrote:

“Reminder: it is literally impossible for anonymous sources to ‘confirm’ a report, particularly when the original report is based solely on anonymous sources. The same people can repeat claims to multiple reporters, of course, particularly when engaged in a campaign operation.”

Elsewhere on Fox News, Griffin’s reporting did not seem to persuade some of her colleagues, including The Five” co-host Greg Gutfeld, who called the Atlantic’s story “a hoax” and “a scam” that was “created in a lab.”

But Trump’s attack on Griffin was a bridge too far for her colleagues, seven of whom took to Twitter over the weekend to defend her.

“Jennifer @JenGriffinFNC is a great reporter and a total class act,” wrote Baier, the network’s chief political anchor.

“Jennifer Griffin is the kind of reporter we all strive to be like,” said national correspondent Bryan Llenas. “She’s courageous, smart, ethical, fair and a class act. She’s earned the trust of viewers throughout a distinguished career and is credibile.”

“@JenGriffinFNC is a terrific reporter and a wonderful colleague,” State Department correspondent Rich Edson wrote.

“I’ll forever stand by @JenGriffinFNC,” said senior news producer Rocco Aloe.

“Jennifer Griffin is all you want in a journalist and a friend,” wrote senior field producer Yonat Friling.

“She’s smart, courageous, she strives for professionalism and the truth. I am so proud to be her colleague.”

Although Griffin’s reporter, producer and anchor colleagues defended her from criticism, Fox News Channel has not yet commented on Trump’s attack, in line with how the network has handled broadsides from the president throughout his administration.

Griffin, who joined Fox News in 1999, is one of the network’s most prized and distinguished journalists. In October 2019, after news anchor Shepard Smith, a frequent critic of the president, abruptly resigned, the network cited Griffin as evidence that a robust journalistic corps remained, despite external skepticism. “Tell that to Jennifer Griffin, whose report just went viral this week,” a spokesperson said at the time. “Or Chris Wallace, Bret Baier, Bill Hemmer, Martha MacCallum or Catherine Herridge, who have all done outstanding journalism.” (Herridge soon left the network for CBS News.)

“Jennifer is a straight shooter and always pursues reporting with the goal of uncovering the truth,” former Fox News foreign correspondent Conor Powell, who worked with Griffin, told The Washington Post on Saturday. “Unlike a lot of ‘news people’ at Fox News, she never was worried about being on the wrong side of a story and angering the opinion shows.”

Griffin defended herself during an appearance on Fox News on Saturday. “My sources are unimpeachable,” she said. “I feel very confident with what we have reported at Fox. Not every line of the Atlantic article did I confirm, but I would say that most of the descriptions and the quotes in that Atlantic article, I did find people who were able to confirm, and so I feel very confident in my reporting. … I’m a reporter, and it was my job to report what I heard.”

Anchor Neil Cavuto then endorsed her work. “Jennifer, you are a very good reporter,” he told her. Then, addressing his audience, he said, “She’s pretty scrupulous when it comes to making sure all the i’s are dotted, all the t’s are crossed.”

Jennifer Griffin defended by Fox News colleagues after Trump Twitter attack over confirmation of Atl...

Looks like Fox just called trumps and his supporters posting here's bluff!  They'll never admit trump lied and that they were wrong!

Lesson learned.....NEVER trust or defend a compulsive liar.  NEVER!

Regarding this, particular, meme ABOVE...I've gotten to the point, over the last few months actually, that I DON'T CARE if it's true or not.  The demoncraps are soooo fervent in spreading THEIR LIES and debating everybody else...that i just got to where  I DON'T CARE anymore if what i post IS TRUE OR NOT.

What I post, SAYS HOW I FEEL about our President AND...about the lyin' demoncraps and their America hating agenda.

Wow, such vitriol and name-calling!  Yikes!  Not mad, are you?  Sorry if someone (actually a lot of people) called your president a hypocrite and you got your feelings hurt.

I think he is a hypocrite myself and that is HOW I FEEL about your president.

Once again the Toad Worshipers think since THEY never fact check, nobody will fact check THEM. As always they are WRONG!

There was no bill on the Federal level offering assistance to children of fallen heros!

The bill was in the New York legislature, and here's what happened

The Democrats requested more time to examine the potential cost of the bill, then on April 17, 2019, New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the state would waive state tuition, as well as room and board fees, for families of New York veterans killed or disabled while on duty . By the previous eligibility interpretation “only children, spouses, and financial dependents of veterans killed in a combat zone were eligible for the scholarship,” according to a news release from the governor Cuomo effectively said the state would provide the necessary funds to implement the expansion of provisions to aid families of veterans with tuition assistance as previously proposed in the state Senate

Meanwhile Moscow Mitch refuses to open debate on a new Covid Releif Bill because his LordToad demands it include a legal protection for employers who do NOTHING to protect their workers from Covid

Disgusting, the dems will jump on anything that is said AGAINST President Trump whether it's true or not! Anybody that believes this garbage, after everything Trump has done for our veterans, (unlike other Presidents) simply does not care about the TRUTH.

==============================================

The more I see the posts of the left on this board I see that they either are unable to understand how they have been had by the media.

And i stand by my comment.

And i stand by my comment.

True.

Many have said that the story was not true. It shows what one article can do...its been big news. Its in today's paper and the article does not mention the fact that Trumps enemy Bolton how was there said its not true. Very telling of the news media's coverage of this story.

It's let the media lie and we (the left) will swear it's true. That's what has happened with this lie. The truth does not matter when a writer lies in a effort to make Trump look bad..like in this case. I see it has worked with the left on this board.

Trump's vile assault on American war hero John McCain, his disparagement of American POWs, his disparagement of Vietnam veterans, his disparagement of the Purple Heart medal substantiate his disgusting statement toward Americans killed in battle!!!

But we both know that no amount of proof supporting Trump's vile actions will ever be enough for a Trump supporter!!!

sunluvngal @myexper

President Trump, while McCain was still alive and since his passing, expressed his dislike for HIM.  As i have said before, President Trump is not the only person that didn't care for McCain.  By the way, it isn't a "requirement" that a President like EVERYBODY. LOL  Personally i respect President Trumps honesty, others prefer to believe whatever suits their agenda.

As i said before, President Trump has done more for our Veterans, in his short time in office, than any recent presidents even cared to do.  His record speaks for him, not the lies being spread by different news sources with an agenda.

The rest of your response is simply not true, however, i'm aware that the democraps will accept any disgusting reports and lies about this President as THEIR TRUTH.

And the dems records speak for them:

dems killed a bill to help veterans kids BUT good one dec 2019.png

Indeed it does....so do the Repubs with their dishonest posts like the one above:

SUMMARY

Democrats did not block national legislation aimed at providing tuition assistance to families of military personnel disabled or killed while on duty. In April 2019, New York Assembly Democrats did block a bill expanding tuition assistance to children of veterans killed or disabled in combat.

Days later, Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo waived tuition and room and board fees for family members of military personnel killed or disabled while on duty, essentially instating the demands proposed in the bill.

In January 2019, the New York state Senate had approved the DREAM Act aimed at helping undocumented immigrants with expenses associated with higher education. Cuomo signed this measure in April 2019.

Fact check: New York Democrats did block tuition assistance bill but Cuomo expanded benefits for vet...

Dems know the difference between facts and lies.  Some should do better research!
