GOP eyeing nearly $1 billion cut to Harvey disaster funds to help finance Trump's border wall

  • House Republicans are looking at cutting almost $1 billion from disaster accounts to help finance the president's border wall
  • The $876 million cut would cover roughly half the cost of Trump's down payment on a U.S.-Mexico border wall
  • About $2.3 billion would remain in disaster coffers

President Donald Trump is promising billions to help Texas rebuild from Harvey-caused epic flooding, but his Republican allies in the House are looking at cutting almost $1 billion from disaster accounts to help finance the president's border wall.

Maybe Trump can get Mexico to pay for disaster relief for the Gulf so Congress can makes cuts to disaster relief to pay for Trump's  wall.

Think it will work?

Notice all the talking points made by Republican Texas legislators:    The people are coming to the rescue of their fellow Texans, cheer-lead, cheer-lead.       Next will come the, gee isn't it great how resilient these people are...followed by they are so resilient that they really don't need any funds to get their lives back on track , they can just live back in their contaminated homes until they can afford to fix them up on their own....so funding isn't necessary for "those people" - all money to corporations.

Thank you af....you left off the one about private charities, churches and voluntary contributions stepping up to the plate and hitting one out of the park for the home team....See...you don't really need a disaster fund after all.  Goof folks will always be responisble, kick into the kitty what is 'needed' and the fat cats and the me-firsters can once more avoid responsibility.  Good for the bottom line, that is.  Not for people in times like these.

Now...I must make sure I don't swing this tar brush too wide.  There are indeed responsible business men who make vast contributions to the continuation of this society...a lot of them.  We all benefit from their altruism whether or not we know of it.  The list is long and the members of this distinguished club often not recognized...as recognition is often not wanted. They do not legally have to do this.  The obligation is moral, ethical AND self-imposed.  Good and decent people, they are....every one.

Republican zealots of the current stripe have the unmitigated gall to demand offsets and vote against funds that clearly were intended to deal with anticipated disasters certain to come.  Listen closely, those voices are once more carping in the background.  Good and decent people, they are not....every one.
