One does have to wonder why Pirates were so hot to trot for "PIECES of Eight", those being the "small change" literally cut from the Spanish dollars. Mayhap Pirates frequented places that had nothing that cost a whole dollar?

I have to laugh as the RW would hate to hear that the big bad USA- WASP adopted anything from our southern neighbor.   OH MY!

(sigh) How sad - some are so hate filled and down on their nation that they can manufacture racism in anything.

OH MY!!

Now really sideways - I assume that bloggers here read about what is happening around the globe and especially what is happening to the global economy.   Well, today, the Bank of England guru, Mark Carney explains in "economese" ( another word for bleep) the financial status of England and why it is not in a deflationary stance - it really is quite a hoot!

alfred - Great article. My recollection is the peso de ocho was shaped like a stopsign and to make change, you would just take you knife and slice off a "wedge" of silver, called a "bit". Since there were 8 "bits" in a dollar, "2-bits" became slang for a Quarter, which led to the school pep rally cheer:

"2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar.

All for (school name) stand up and holler"

also "shave and a haircut - 2 bits" (long before inflation was a problem)
