Which way is the US going.... politically?

I was told "clearly ... we as a nation have moved left" or have we.

Yes same sex marriage, health care, marijuana legalization would seem to indicate so, but gun rights have increased, school choice, and lower government spending.

White, married Christians, the core of the Republican Party, are a shrinking percentage of the population, and the Democratic Party is considered to have a structural advantage in presidential elections. Well so it seemed until the last election. The party’s left-wing champions, Elizabeth Warren, Maxine Waters, Bernie Sanders and Bill de Blasio, are increasingly setting its agenda, with left of center democrats losing influence.

It appeared after the election of Obama, it was concluded the Clinton coalition days were gone. Conservatism would be vanquished forever. Done. Then the storm rolled throught the states and republicans took control and now the federal government. Incredable turn of events. Democrats still wheeling.

So which way?.... not party wise, but liberal or conservative? Republicans have established theirs as the party of conservatism, but not the party of conservative solutions. We see "some'' democrats trying to build a more conservative reputation, but will be a tall order because they will lack party support.  The public has not turned to the left ideologically, and it remains unhappy with the status quo under Obama.

I agree he's not part of the problem. But since most politicians are spewing verbal diarrhea ... a plumber will do just fine.

Who is not part of the problem?  Arpaio is for violating the rights of all those people and Trump is for letting him off.

Verbal diarrhea is Trump's forte'.  He can't seem to keep his story straight if they take away his teleprompter.  Still, pardoning Arpaio will probably be the thing that kills his presidency.

Gotcha... pardoning Arpaio will probably be the thing that kills his presidency.

Here's a tidbit. Tired of false hope... change is more important.

More than 10% of voters who supported Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary against Hillary Clinton defected and ended up voting for Donald Trump in the general election.

That’s according to a new report from the Cooperative Congressional Election Study.

Not bad for a "skidmark" as one of our classier posters refers to him.

Yep, that "skidmark" got votes from those who had supported Bernie, many of them 'Hillary haters'.  Beats me ......... 'hate Hillary' cut off your own nose for spite. 'Hate Hillary', then support a candidate that resulted in giving even more seats to the Republicans in our Congress, voting for policies and an agenda that is the direct opposite of what Bernie stood for. Sure seems rather  s t u p i d  to me. Hate can make people do  s t u p i d  things.  Even with the 'Hillary hater' votes,  Trump received 3 million less popular votes than Hillary did.

And even with that - trump lost the popular vote by a 3 million vote margin.

The skidmark in the nation's underwear still continues to have historically low approval ratings by Americans - and historically high disapproval ratings by Americans.

His book was misnamed - It should have been "The Art of the Schlemiel".

The population shift to the 'burbs has been going on since WWII, with a hiccup during the jrbush Great Depression. IMHO, the long term problem is the good jobs that had been following the move our of cities has been replaced with the good jobs moving out of the country, and Lemontop hasn't changed a thing on that score.

So people moved to the 'burbs because, face it, if you're not rich, living in big cities is seldom an attractive lifestyle compared to what you can afford a few miles "further out". But that is changing. Without Revenue Sharing, suburbs and small towns cannot support the services people have come to expect by taxing their citizens. For the last 25 years, the "shortfall" in tax revenue was made up with increased fees for everything from trash collection to school textbooks and activities.

Seems people are noticing they cannot afford to live in the 'burbs either, and many might even take the time and effort to find out why.

When all those ex-urbanites discover they cannot achieve Mon and Dad's lifestlye and it's NOT because of illegals, Muslims or Gays and tax cuts for the rich didn't solve any of THEIR problems, voting patterns will be shifting to the left, even in Texas.

Clinton hands G.W. Bush a rose garden and what does he do with it ? G.W. Bush hands Obama a mess and what does he do with it ? Obama hands Trump a rose garden and what will he do with it ?

You would be either a liar or have your head in the sand , to dispute the above.

So.... the American voters are what? and those same voters who elected 1000+ republican legislators and governors? what are they?

See how that works? using names? ... you know the basket of deplorables.

Why must everybody be placed in a category by the left? Is it justify your disdain for people of a different opinion? and how can they be so _______ fill in the blank with a word provided by the DNC.

Pay attention to the posting by the right here in this forum. It seems that anyone not agreeing with them are "placed in a category".  How can they be so ________ ? Fill in the blank yourself with derogatory words provided by radical right wing posters.

1985---following a period of limiting and eliminating certain aspects of government by eliminating the operating budget for that activity a Ronald Reagan staffer used the words "Starve The Beast" to describe the process.  paraphrase from Wikipedia.

Political parties tend to follow the trajectory of the voters or they cease to become a political party. Both sides picked up planks form Ross Perot's platforms.

We are seeing LGBT voters flocking to political functions, making donations, and offering support to causes. They have learned the lessons of the AIDS wars.  Many LGBT are single sex, double income couples who have the time and resources to forward the agendas they believe impacts them directly.

Go into a Walmart in much of the country and the signs will be in Spanish and English. Look to the small businesses of American and you will see a predominance of minority, immigrant owners. These people will be more conservative in many areas but firm believers in the separation of church and state as they have seen, first hand, what can happen.  Their children will be controlling large sections of the economy.

I think the Democratic party will be the beneficiary of these and other trends because it is welcoming these "cultures". I also think it will shape the platforms in both parties. Immigrants tend to want good schools. They will not depend on bumper stickers to advise them but the results of the school systems and woe to any administration which does not deliver.  Gun rights are being increased with open carry laws but one or two shoot outs at Toys-R-Us over the latest "in" toy should move that pendulum.  Especially since the number of gun owners is decreasing while the number of guns owned is increasing.

I would love to go on but I think neither party will look the way they do today and the Republicans will have a lot of catching up to do as they are not changing as fast as they need to be.
