That is a HUGE part of it. Another part is a deep fear of immigrants coming in to the country. They think the immigrants will latch onto our entitlement programs and become dependent on them. The Trump party hates "entitlement programs" as we all know. They want the smallest government possible, until they need it for more tax cuts that benefit the top 1% or so only. They also fear the current trends in the country, which is becoming more racially mixed. It won't be long before whites are the minority in the U.S. and they do not like this one bit. I am reading an interesting book called "America Ascendant" by Stanley Greenburg which I recommend. It talks about the entrenched party of Trump, and their fears. It is quite interesting. The Trump party is entrenched now fully and digging in to fight these demographic changes that are happening and coming to our country. They will do anything and everything to maintain control of power in D.C., much to our countries peril, sadly.

The part where "we must fear the coming scourge of socialism". Perhaps I am reading it wrong?

Do you disagree that it's a fear trump/Republicans are pushing?  Do you think it's a reasonsable fear?  Or is it a non-sense fear, or none of the above?

It’s almost funny, in a twisted sort of way. Election after election, Republicans have based their core political appeal on fear.

But even this suggestion rings hollow, given that Republican officials across federal and state governments are actively working to reduce access to mental health care. A federal suit brought by 20 red states and supported by the Trump administration seeks to strike down the entire Affordable Care Act, which extended behavioral health coverage to millions through Medicaid and the essential health benefits required in individual market plans.

Republicans thrive on imagined menaces. Yet when a real-life menace demands action, they dismiss it. What, pray tell, is the party so afraid of?

Short answer: Republicans are TERRIFIED of an informed electorate.

It's why Reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine that kept demagogs OFF our airways and why Republicans oppose anything that improves the education of Americans. They want voters unschooled in the art of logical thinking so FOX can sell them birtherism and antivaccer nonsense, present poor desperate brown refugees as a MILITARY FORCE INVADING THE USA! while ignoring the Russian PsyOps Warriors (and Cambridge Analytical et al) who rigged the 2016 election and are poised to do it again in 2020.

As for their support of mental health, that's crapola. The Reagan taxscam killed Revenue Sharing, so when the Courts ruled that mental patients could NOT work while they were confined (unable to give "informed concent") and the Federal funds dried up, States CLOSED their mental health facilities so in most places the only option for those who cannot afford Betty Ford or a similar for-profit facility,  is a prison for the CRIMINALLY INSANE.

The other problem with blaming mental health for the GUN violence is the vast majority of the shooters were seemingly normal until they slaughtered a school full of 5 year-olds.

Fear and division have been at the core of trump’s mindset.

I think that we might add another underlying fear for the white racist populace. As they see minorities increase in numbers, and perhaps soon to become majorities, they fear that if minorities come to power, racist white folks will be treated as second class citizens and considered as subhuman, reaping what they racially sowed.

Maybe this is going a little deeper, but might be a driver for some racist white fears.

What they do not realize is that there is a solution, treat all others equally, with respect and compassion...also to reap what you sow!

Today the up for election GOP Senator from TX tweeted that he was all for bi-partisan negotiations, in keeping with Moscow Mitch, which means that there will be no action taken until after the 2020 election.     That, to me, means working to remove the one in my State that is lying about sane gun control, as a 21 yo man who reads / blogs  like  the shooter in El Paso was sentenced to 6 years in jail.

Then there is the affluent 16yo male in SC is facing

faces criminal charges following a violent, racial-slur-laden social media post in which he shoots a box of shoes representing black people.

“Howdy. I’m Parker Mustian, and I hate black prople,” he can be heard saying in the video as he loads a rifle. “They’re the worst. They’re stinky and they just suck. They’re just bad people. You’ll notice over there, there’s a box of Jordans — the favorite pair of shoes for a black man. I’m gonna show you what I think of the black man.”

“F**k all n*****s,” he adds after shooting the box several times.

I could hope that these few boy-men were outliers, but anyone who has been paying attention knows that is not true.

Good article that is spot on. I think the Republican Party gets away with nonstop fearmongering because they have a base that doesn't care if they can't come up with solutions. Perhaps if the base threatened to quit voting for them unless they solve some problems they would do more than wring their hands and moan.

Yes you are correct all of these fears   are fueling a future of this country's becoming more socialistic than it should become. Huh?  The fears are "fueling a future of this country's becoming more socialistic".  Really?  How's that?  Or is the fear of the perceived socialism fueling the fear?

and that will play in the future if things don't change in the manner that government is viewed. Say what???

There is not doubt that there is a raise of discontent in this nation Really?  Do you mean America isn't great again?  Racism is rampet.....minorities are being gunned down in the street by White Supremacists.....aren't we Great again?

and unfortunately Trump has been the great  offender that is fueling the raise of extremism  Agreed.

This country needs an emergency STOP in all fronts, I'm confident you know what that means....

and simply work to remove the offender that will continue to infest with his theories agreed....

this country.  OK...

Great point and well said!!!!  And as you know, that's not the definition of a democracy.....they want to define it for you.
