What Is Hate Speech?

This is an important topic and many people associated with this forum apparently don’t understand it. Most people agree that it should never be tolerated. But that brings up a key question. What is hate speech?

Hate Speech is defined as “abusive or threatening speech/writing that expresses prejudice against specific groups of people based upon Gender, Race, and Ethnicity. It’s a form of speech essentially directed at groups based upon characteristics they are born with.

Under, certain circumstances, Hate Speech can also apply to religion.  For example, saying all Muslims or Jews should die is clearly a form of hate speech. But saying many wars are caused by organized religion would not be classified as hate speech. That would be an observation.

Let’s examine how this is applied legally. Under Federal Law, hate crimes are subject to harsher penalties if it involves race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, or gender of any person. Except for religion, we can see they are attributes one is born with.

Hate Speech in our culture does not apply to political groups, voting groups, or anything else associated with politics. Making comments and/or observations about a group of voters who support a political party or candidate is not protected as hate speech. People are not born as a member of a poltiical group, it's a personal choice.
