[Because] A well regulated Militia, [is] necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The founders had just fought a war where the government used its military might to oppress the people.  They were reluctant to have a standing military that could turn or be used against the people and provided this safe guard but recognized that we would have to be able to defend outselves.  Otherwise they could have just said, We can have a standing military" and would not have had to say anything about the people.

District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008), is a landmark case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held, in a 5–4 decision, that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense ...

It's impossible to read the minds of the people who originally wrote the 2nd ammendment but the Supreme Court might just provide another ruling on the current definition. Who knows?

Thank you, I have been reading the Federalists Papers and also the many times that the Supreme court that has dealt with the 2nd Amendment.
And yes, there seems to be different meanings. I wonder if the Supreme Court will take this issue again.?

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Reading the first part - a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State - it appears that the intent was to have a group to protect the country from outside attacks rather than to prepare for the overreach of the elected government.

From the beginning of this country up to 2008 the opinion was that there was not an individual right to own a gun and that states were within their right to restrict where and when a gun could be carried. That all changed in 2008 with the Supreme Court decision in District of Columbia v. Heller.

One thing that is certain is that there will be different opinions of the meaning of the Second Amendment as long as it is in effect and there is little chance that it will ever be revised to make clear the meaning.

The right to bear arms.  that is what it says, but is this the meaning that our founders meant when they wrote this in our Constitution.
I have heard this meaning.
The right to bear arms to defend ourselves against the Government
Was that the true meaning of the 2nd Amendment?
