China is overtaking the U.S. in all areas, and is now a leader NOT a follower as the U.S. has become. They just recently have the worlds most powerful supercomputer.

And unlike the U.S., they're doing it without getting directly involved in multiple wars.

You're right. And the original poster is right - this has been going on for 20 years.

It's globalism plus capitalism. I don't see much we can do. If our leaders pressure China, we can see China pushing back, as they already have. Trump is now threatening $200 billion more in tariffs.

If we put pressure on American multinational corporations, they'll probably just move their businesses to Vietnam, for example. Then we put tariffs on Vietnam?

I can go to a local department store and buy sneakers that say "Made in Vietnam".

In our economic system, I don't see how we can win (bringing jobs back to the U.S.). Our economy will spiral downward sooner or later.

Consumers from China and other countries can boycott American products. It's not all that difficult for them, yet it is basically impossible for the American consumer to do the same. Everything from Crest toothpaste to Tide Detergent is "Made in China".

It's a mess and I don't see it reversing.

I can give Trump "E" for "Effort", but I just don't see how we can "win" this so-called "trade war". If Trump persists, then.....hang on to your seat.

President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. Trade Representative to identify $200 billion in Chinese products on which to levy tariffs in response to China’s retaliatory tariffs and threatened more if China refuses to change its “unfair” trade practices.

President Trump released the following statement on Monday evening:

On Friday, I announced plans for tariffs on $50 billion worth of imports from China. These tariffs are being imposed to encourage China to change the unfair practices identified in the Section 301 action with respect to technology and innovation. They also serve as an initial step toward bringing balance to our trade relationship with China.

However and unfortunately, China has determined that it will raise tariffs on $50 billion worth of United States exports. China apparently has no intention of changing its unfair practices related to the acquisition of American intellectual property and technology. Rather than altering those practices, it is now threatening United States companies, workers, and farmers who have done nothing wrong.

This latest action by China clearly indicates its determination to keep the United States at a permanent and unfair disadvantage, which is reflected in our massive $376 billion trade imbalance in goods. This is unacceptable. Further action must be taken to encourage China to change its unfair practices, open its market to United States goods, and accept a more balanced trade relationship with the United States.

Therefore, today, I directed the United States Trade Representative to identify $200 billion worth of Chinese goods for additional tariffs at a rate of 10 percent. After the legal process is complete, these tariffs will go into effect if China refuses to change its practices, and also if it insists on going forward with the new tariffs that it has recently announced. If China increases its tariffs yet again, we will meet that action by pursuing additional tariffs on another $200 billion of goods. The trade relationship between the United States and China must be much more equitable.

I have an excellent relationship with President Xi, and we will continue working together on many issues. But the United States will no longer be taken advantage of on trade by China and other countries in the world.

We will continue using all available tools to create a better and fairer trading system for all Americans.

The move comes after intense negotiations between top U.S. and Chinese trade officials in both Beijing and Washington, DC. China threatened retaliatory tariffs of $50 billion this year when Trump first ordered his officials to consider an additional $50 billion. When Trump threatened another $100 billion in tariffs if China retaliated with matching tariffs, Chinese President Xi Jinping appeared to relent with consideration of reduced tariffs on imports of U.S. automobiles.

Last week, Trump met with U.S. trade officials and signed off on the $50 billion in additional tariffs on China as he recalled in Monday evening’s statement. China shot back with the matching $50 billion that it had previously threatened. However, this time, Trump is raising the stakes over the additional $100 billion he previously said he would consider, charging the U.S. Trade Representative to consider $200 billion in additional tariffs on Chinese goods, with yet another $200 billion possible if China refuses to relent.

Trump has repeatedly called on China to end unfair trade practices and theft of U.S. intellectual property. After the U.S. Commerce Department officially determined China was using Vietnam to circumvent anti-steel dumping measures, Trump suggested that the U.S. may need a “different structure” in crafting a trade deal with China.

The left here does not see this as a problem...  Are they on the same side as China?  What's up with that?  What motivation do they have to see America on the losing end of a trade war?

Trump campaign senior trade advisor and former Nucor CEO Dan DiMicco discusses Donald Trump’s economic plan.

Donald Trump touted lower taxes and he doubled down on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement [NAFTA] as he unveiled his economic plan on Monday in Detroit.

Despite being the party’s nominee, some members of the GOP still aren’t on board with Trump’s stance on trade. However former Nucor CEO and a Trump campaign trade advisor, Dan DiMicco, said the plan is on point during an interview on the FOX Business Network.

“His speech today was one that really put forward a vision for us becoming a more globally competitive country when it comes to doing business with the world,” he said. “And the four areas he highlighted—all of them have equal importance. Taxes, trade, regulation and with respect to energy.”

Previously, Trump announced a four-point plan regarding trade with China, calling the country a “currency manipulator.”

“We’ve been in a trade war with China for 20 years. Except, there’s been an undeclared trade war where China has declared war on us and we have not responded. During that period of time our GDP has suffered, probably on average 2% less than it would have been. We’ve not had the formation of 20 million jobs that would’ve happened. And the massive trade cheating has to stop,” DiMicco said, adding, “free trade only works if people play by the rules.”

The former Nucor CEO said trade is one area that is most important to Trump, especially during his bid for the White House.

“This is something he’s passionate about and it’s not a Johnny come lately type of thing.”

We have been in a trade war with China for 20 years and they have kicked our butts big time.  I am of the opinion we no longer roll over and just let them keep it up.

Why is this concept so difficult for the left to understand?

You folks are so comfortable with the concept of losing you don't remember how to win...

True, but for the last 30 years, Republican's have sided with China against the USA. \

Back during the Cold War, we tossed around ideas about what we could do for China that would appear innocent and benevolent but would also most irritate our Russian friends. The final answer was "send them a couple truck plants".

The wisdom of this was demonstrated in August 1978 when China invaded Vietnam. The Vietnamese Army just kept retreating, and in March 1979, China announced "Vietnam has been taught its lesson" and they withdrew. Fact is, the Chinese Army had over-extended it's logistic support, and their numerical superiority became a burden they could not support.

Today, thanks to Republicans sending our jobs and technology to China to boost Executive salaries, they have those truck plants in profusion, along with first line fighter jets that can stand toe to toe with our F-16's and F-18's and anti-ship missiles that cost $10Million and can destroy the flight deck of our $3Billion CVA(N)s from 1,000 miles away.

Not only have the GOPerLords handed China our economic leadership, they included military superiority in the package, and didn't even let us know it was happening until it happened.

VOTE OUT THE NRAGOP IN NOVEMBER - while you still have a job and a country.

Trump Lovers are allergic to facts, while their hero, Donald Trump, is an economic imbecile. He withdrew from the TPP where we had a huge leadership role in Asia, which opened the door for China to replace us.

JimC and others keep telling us the economy is booming, unemployment is at near record lows, corporate profits are setting records, but wants us to believe China's eating our cake. If China's doing so much damage to us, why or how do we have such a fabulous economy?

Jim, we are the economic envy of the planet earth. The U.S. is number one in the world. Unfortunately, Trump is doing his best to ruin that status and open the door for China to replace us as the best economy in the world. Watch what happens to global markets after Trump announces more tariffs and a global trade war.

The next myth Trump Lovers believe it's all China, China, and China, while the U.S. is getting battered. Since Trump supporters don't do research, they are economically ignorant. Here's a partial list of American companies making a killing in China.
