Trump's devastating blows to seniors

https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-has-dealt-seniors-devastating-blows-matter-days-2020-8

Trump has dealt seniors, who represent 23% of registered voters, 2 devastating blows in a matter of days

  • President Donald Trump said he would block new funding for the US Postal Service because of mail-in voting which he claimed benefits Democrats, The Wall Street Journal reported.

  • However, the move could negatively impact seniors who rely on the US Postal Service to deliver their medications.

  • It's the second move that negatively impacts senior residents that the president has made in a few days.

  • Trump also promised to scrap the payroll tax if he's reelected. The payroll tax funds Social Security and Medicaid, which seniors rely on.

President Donald Trump on Thursday promised to block new funding for the US Postal Service in coronavirus-aid talks to limit efforts to expand mail-in-voting which he claims benefits Democrats, despite no evidence, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"Now they need that money in order to make the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots," he said in an interview with Fox Business Network on Thursday. "But if they don't get those two items that means you can't have universal mail-in voting because they're not equipped to have it."

While Trump slightly walked these comments back on Tuesday evening at a press briefing, a lack of funding for the USPS doesn't just impact mail-in voting.

It also means that some senior citizens could have their prescriptions that are fulfilled by mail delayed.

This is the second blow Trump has dealt to seniors, who'll represent 23% of registered voters in November, in a matter of days.

According to the Pew Research Center, this year almost a quarter of voters will be 65 years old or older, which is the highest share since at least 1970.

ConnectingVets reported that 80% of the Department of Veterans Affairs prescriptions are fulfilled by mail. The outlet reported that almost 500,000 prescriptions are processed daily by the Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy.

In a survey published by the National Community Pharmacist Association, 20% of adults over 40 said they exclusively get their medication by mail order.

Earlier this week, Trump pledged that if he was re-elected for a second term he would scrap the payroll tax. Business Insider previously reported that the payroll tax is used to fund Social Security and Medicare.

"If I'm victorious on November 3rd, I plan to forgive these taxes and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax," Trump said at a press conference. "I'm going to make them all permanent."

He later said: "In other words, I'll extend it beyond the end of the year and terminate the tax. So we'll see what happens."

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people over the age of 65 as well as for younger Americans with disabilities.

Additionally, 58% of retirees said Social Security was a "major source" of income for them, according to an April 2020 Gallup poll.

Again, the problem is not what is mailed by the USPS under the higher class mail classifications - the problem is when government agencies (including states) want to pay only bulk rates but want priority service.  If you want priority service from the USPS, you have to pay for it - private entity or government.

-------------------------------------------

That's fine. As long as we still have the option to use USPS.

The problem with Trump (and what his followers fail to realize) is he really could not care less what may or may not adversely effect the American people (young or old).  Everything Trump does (and I do mean EVERYTHING), he does in order to benefit himself, his family, and/or the Trump Enterprise.  Period!

Every step he takes and every move he makes has in them a hidden agenda or some advantage whose intent is to position him ever nearer to his ulterior goal--that being more of everything for himself!

Seniors?  Well, they're just the latest group to fall under the Trump hatchet.

About those medication deliveries to whomever receives them via mail -

I didn't check them all but those that come from OPTUMRx, the AARP Med D plan sanctioned private provider, they send the meds 1st class mail

https://www.optumrx.com/public/optumrx-info-public/shipping-and-delivery-public

and they also give the beneficiary a choice of paying a higher class of postage if they need it fast or even faster.

I don't know what class of mail government pharma suppliers use on a regular basis to send meds to beneficiaries under some government program but do know that if certain class drugs are sent out, they have to use tracking and that means a higher class of mail.  Schedule 2 narcotics are usually NOT filled by mail order.

Vets when using the VA program can track the delivery of their prescription through their Advanced or Premium My HealtheVet account.  This means that it is a higher class of mail than bulk mail.

The problem here is not that beneficiaries can't get their meds by mail - it is the class of mail that some govenment agencies use that slows down the process.  You cannot get 1st class treatment from the USPS if you are only paying a bulk price.

In the Fox/Trump Alternate Reality Bubble, everything he does is perfect. If only those people could step out of the bubble, they might understand why decent Americans hate Trump.

I just have to say, that I am totally amazed at the total lack of understanding of what Trump means and intends to do that has gone on from the Trump hating world.

It makes me wonder if they really believe what they say, or they just say it to get him out of office like the Democratic politicians do.

The pharmacy no doubt gets a break on rates by having DHL transport to the post office for delivery.  Are you sure your online pharmacy doesn't have similar arrangements?

@Loulit

If a Vet enrolls in an Advanced or Premium MyHealthVet Account via VA.gov, they can track their meds. For a feasible tracking system, anything that is mailed via the USPS is handled at a higher class of mail than bulk rates.

Again, the problem is not what is mailed by the USPS under the higher class mail classifications - the problem is when government agencies (including states) want to pay only bulk rates but want priority service.  If you want priority service from the USPS, you have to pay for it - private entity or government.
