Until at least the 1970's, the ONLY American History taught in the South was how Appomattox was just a ploy by Lee to cover a strategic withdrawal, and the South was NEVER really defeated. The glory of the Confederate victories on the battlefield were followed by descriptions of the deprivations suffered by Whites during reconstruction - basically a seven year occupation by a foreign power.

And of course descriptions of slavery as being the only way the child-like negro could survive because they could not learn to read or write, and could barely understand how to use a hoe...nothing about the fact TEACHING slaves to read or write could get you lynched, or how these "racial characteristics" all vanished when you moved north.

This total distortion of reality and sense of betrayal and degradation at the hands of newly freed slaves and Northern Carpetbaggers is the ONLY "Heritage" millions of Southern Whites have ever learned about. Face it, admitting their grandpa had been totally conned by the slave owners to die for the owners property rights and wealth is not something anyone wants to consider, and the schools taught a fairytale about the Nobility of Johnny Reb valiantly fighting and Dying for their independence from Northern Aggressions is a much more appealing scenario than what really happened.

The disingenuous equivocations (lies) referred to and defended as "cultural heritage", "traditional values" and "historical traditions" are all dogwhistles referring to maintaining racial inequities, lies, bigotry, and prejudice.

A great many are as equally truthful as the rapist who said "it was consensual" - because - after being badly beaten - having a knife held to her throat and threatened with death - she stopped resisting.

The entire confederacy were traitors to the Union that was the United States.  By definiton.  From the very beginning.  Treason is not one of the things tolerated under free speech.  Not then, not now.

I see no reason symbols or statues that glorify treason are not the very same thing.  Tell me why they are not.

One of the positive outcomes:   the removal of "confederate" statues continue.    They are not being destroyed, they are being relocated to locales that will involve history and education, just not necessarily on the mainstream downtown streets.

City Mayors are saying NOW is the time, when it should have happened decades ago.   Lexington Kentucky:    http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/13/us/kentucky-confederate-monuments/index.html

One claims the Nazi wannabe's and KKK came for a picnic and were just wearing their Sunday best, totally ignoring their hate speech.  Those who defend this behavior offend logic.

After all, what can they say?

One of their scum-brethren - in what appears to be a deliberate act of domestic terrorism - killed a woman.

Definitely not patriotic - no matter how one spins it...
