Might it be that the younger generation is refusing to fall into the bigoted, far right stance which evangelicals have taken. It’s no longer a focus of doing good for others, but how they can take from others, and how they can deny others their God given rights!

aka, seeing thru the hypocrisy which has nothing to do with religious teachings.

prri found a six-percentage-point drop in the share of the population that identify as white evangelicals

It could be because they do not think of themselves in racial terms - that is the game of the left.

Some are beholden to the idea that race, or color, equates to "racial terms".

The decline in membership for self-proclaimed "evangelical" churches is because young people do not want to stay with a church that rejects their LGBTQ friends and opposes women's rights. Smaller declines in the mainline churches are for the same reason, but from 2012 to 2017, the drop in the number of people identifying as "religious" (59% to 48%) is almost equaled by the increase in people identifying as "spiritual but not religious" (19% to 27%).  It's not belief that is declining, it's tolerance for bigotry disguised as religion.

Sorry, but I can't help but wonder if...

"Do not put out the Spirits fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil." from 1st Thessalonians chapter 5 and "You hypocrite's! Isiah was right when he prophesied about you. These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are from me.  They worship in vain, their teachings are not but rules taught by man." from Matthew chapter 15

is indeed some very wise advice for all, no?

Spoiler

I’m seeing this here. I saw a lot of young white evangelical Christians leave their churches because of the embrace of Trump. And his serious lack of moral compass, even if they believe in what he may achieve. The ones I know are still very religious, but they joined mainline churches.

“Yet this coupling seems to be hurting membership of evangelical churches. Several polling firms have detected a decline in the share of Americans who describe themselves as white evangelicals over the past decade. The Pew Research Centre found a two-percentage-point drop from 2007 to 2012. prri found a six-percentage-point drop in the share of the population that identify as white evangelicals, from 23% in 2006 to 17% in 2016. abc and the Washington Postfound a still larger decline of eight percentage points, larger than the drop among mainline white Protestants. The problem is partly generational: in the prri data just 8% of young Americans aged 18-29 say they are white evangelicals, while 26% of those aged 65 or older are white evangelical Protestants. Together with the decline in the share of whites who identify as Catholics, this has caused anxiety among some of the faithful that white Christian America is under threat.”
