The other factor was that manufacturers were unable to keep all the fruits of manufacturing for themselves. I find it amazing when Republicans talk about bringing back "good jobs" and then strike down the unions which made those jobs "good".

The death of the golden goose

Once upon a time,  US industries were winners, we made stuff.   Well, not so much but what is important to note is what was designed and manufactured in the US was technological stuff.   The stuff that donald whines about but doesn't seem to comprehend as to why the Chinese are eating our lunch.    The short answer:  productivity.    Back in the 00"s, the focus by corporations / Wall Street was to be more productive.   That often meant "leaner" and to achieve that state, it meant finding cheaper labor.

When the decision was made to increase productivity to ensure that the wealthy remained so and became even more wealthy by listening only to the demands of Wall Street, then don't blame the workers who wanted to make a decent living.

Outsourcing became the model because it fulfilled the wishes of Wall Street.   Gees, Apple just annouced that it is moving its construction of all things Apple to China.

So why some here will whine on about whatever bs. they deem important, they need to remember how we got here and the threats made by donald are more bs.   Reminder, once upon a time, the US did embrace and underwrite things that made the US great, aka technology.    Then they followed the call of Wall Street and moved to cheaper labor countries.    Whine as donald will - he can't and won't unring that bell, but he will continue to lie about it.   Will his bobble head followers ignore reality?
