The author is looking past the reasons for the division, and it has nothing to do with building free communities vs individual initiative.

Republicans have worked to create non-White Ghettos in our larger cities. These areas were once centers of culture and positive ethnicity, just like other "immigrant neighborhoods", and the residents had access to the manufacturing centers that encouraged generations of poor blacks  to migrate from the rural South.

But after WWII, Republicans encouraged the factories to migrate to the suburbs with TIFF districts and "free" utilities provided by COUNTY government. There was a concerted effort to make sure no public transportation was developed to move the former workers from the city to the 'burbs, housing in the burb's was restricted to Whites Only, so the Black workers could not "follow their jobs" and their income dropped like a rock, along with the tax base needed to support the vast infrastructure needed to support any large city.

The cities reacted by concentrating their services in the areas that produced the revenue to pay for those services, "neglected" housing inspections in the newly poor neighborhoods, and turned a blind eye to "Red Lining" and "Block Busting" that made the practitioners rich but destroyed the Black and Hispanic neighborhoods.

Then when legal segregation of the races became illegal, the Republicans simply moved the jobs SOUTH in what became known as "Dixiefication of Industry". They paid to move the nearly all-white management to the new locations, but the mostly UNION workers were left behind.

The "divide" has nothing to do with "city v country". It is, was and ever will be a divide by RACE orchestrated by Republicans for the GOPerLords who are the only ones who really benefited.

Fascinating indeed!

"The regional cultures we think of as “blue” today have traditions championing the building and maintenance of free communities, today’s “red” ones on maximizing individual freedom of action. Our presidential contests almost always present a clear choice between the two, and the regions act accordingly."
