Jim, does the VA have local outpatient clinics in your area?  Would they require authorization to use them?  Over the past years they have established a good many in the Houston area.  My nephew still has to go to the Houston VA for his care since it's specialized and has team dedicated to his Agent Orange care.

Yes, there is a CBOC about 18 miles away but they have very limited services.

I am a victim of AO also but most of the doctors and testing facilities are over 200 miles away.  The new choice program may let me go outside to my old private doctor about 45 miles away.  Fingers crossed...

Kidboy asked, "How can that be because Congress is working on a new plan?"

The Senate is working on a brand new health plan for next year but that doesn't change the fact that Trump is supporting and defending the current Ryan Health Law as a great plan.

========================================================

Thanks...that shows no one knows how many, if any, will lose their health insurance.

Try reading the CBO's report on "Trumpcare".

I have no idea as to anything military, but I live in a military town. as everyone knows. Pensacola.
Everyone here is military or retired military. all our friends are retired military and they all use VA hospitals and doctors.
In all the time that we have lived here, we never have heard any of them complain about the care that they have received.
I don't know if it is because of the area or what it is. but here, it seems that there is not problem with the Hospitals, and the medical care.

=====================================================

The problem in Montana is we have only one VA hospital.

The choice program is not being accepted by many Doctors and Hospitals for many reasons.

You need to have a Medicare Advantage plan to have good coverage in Montana unless you live very close to Ft Harrison.

I don't doubt that it happens, what I am saying that here in Pensacola apparently they are more protected than in other areas.

Tricare is for retired military....  I seperated from the military after my 4 year enlistment was up.  Tricare is not available for me.

I am very encouraged  and happy with some of the changes I see taking place now.

With the new Choice program that is being implemented now a VET in my situation can be approved to use a local facility under certain conditions.  This is a really good thing for many of us Veterans that live a far distance for a VA facility.

What I am saying is things are changing for the better.

If they are military I'm sure they are required to use the military hospitals in the area, or if they are retired military they would be able to also use those military hospitals on a space available basis.  But for the retired military, they would use some form of Tricare in civilian health care facilities.  The VA is for use of Veterans, not those of us that are retired.  However we are eligible according to the priorities assigned Vets.  Those of us with non-service connected problems are at the lowest level of the priorities.

Tex,  I have no idea of what you mean, I am surrounded by retired military, and they all go to the VA for their drugs an Dr's appointments, They do have Tricare but use it only on certain occasions. like specialists or physical rehab centers. I haave not heard any of them complaining about the services.

@rker321 , I am a disabled veteran from Vietnam and use the VA system for all my health care until this year when I turned 65 and went on Medicare.  Last year I had to drive 220 miles one way to get an MRI scan.  Our local Hospital has an MRI machine but the VA would not allow me to use it.  We are in the beginning of seeing that change thanks to all the attention the VA Health Care system is now getting.

This change is a most welcome event for me.
