The TAX Law does nothing for the middle class or the poor. They in the end will all pay more and that fact has been proved by the experts over and over again. Do not get all excited about details in the new law as none of us know how many errors there are and will not know that for the next year so it is a waste of time pointing out what seem to he items that help. We know the latest error discovered was that if the bill was signed before Jan 1st 2018 the Medicare cuts started now. They fixed that in the bill that kept the government running till Jan. The pay go is still in effect so the cuts to all programs will arrive next year due to the tax law.

The TCJA (Tax Cut and Jobs Act) does a lot for the middle class - the poor pay no income taxes so this legislation is not directed towards them.

Helps the middle class by (looking at it from the senior and disabled standpoint - there is more for families with children)

  • lowering rates
  • increasing the standard deduction
  • for seniors and the blind it preserves the extra exemptions equaling $1300 per person who is age 65 or blind.
  • i mentioned the enhancements to the Able Act for disabled young adults
  • it not only preserved the deductibility of Medical and Dental expenses if a person chooses to itemize but it rolled back the income ceiling limit to 7.5%, even back to tax year 2016 - so some people can even file an amended return for 2016 if they had lots of medical expenses to perhaps get a refund for 2016
  • and it takes away the Individual mandate so that people who get no subsidy can shop and find plans which are outside of the sanctioned plans but meet their needs.

These are just a few off the top of my head.  Much of the main body of the law is

effective for tax year 2018 -

Paygo can be avoided but even if it is not, there are still savings to be had in programs that need some work to survive anyway, like Medicare and Social Security, to name a couple specific to this senior / disabled crowd.

Yes, john258, the battle to bring spending under some control has just been pushed out a few weeks.  But just think, by enacting some changes, some programs may even be preserved for the long term, hopefully the 75 year outlook, but even 40 - 50 would do.  And others made to work better and enhance the benefit for those who need the program of whatever type.

Or even, the TCJA gave people an income tax cut and this could even set the stage for changes like an increase in the payroll tax, and /or a widening of the income level affecting the IRMMA , after 2019,   And any number of other things - the nuts and bolts of the program - just like Obamacare did when he reduced the forecast for Medicare cost and used the cuts to providers and MA plans to help finance The ACA.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, john258.

You better go read the details of the Tax plan as they appear in the papers this morning. You left out all the things it does to raise the taxes of the middle class so in total the middle class in the end will have most people paying more taxes. You show increase the standard deduction, but fail to say it does away with Indv. deduction of over $4,000 per year, and you do that in most of your other example's. You do not either understand this law, or you are true Trump supporter.

New Tax Law Poll

- 45% of people don't pay federal income tax so they are pissed that they did not get a reduction in taxes from this new law - dah
- Avg people making 50K and pay 4K in federal tax only get a reduction of 1K (which although is 25%) is only $20/week
- Mitt Romney, who paid $4 million in tax will save 80K - 80 times more than the average guy
- So people are pissed that the rich get to save 80X more than the average. The Rich pay 1000 times more, only get one vote, get same representation and security as the average guy, but are demonized
- Not happy with saving money because someone saved more than you
- Your decisions have become your lot in life: How do you define 'looser's jealousy'

People that pay no tax should NOT get any additional benefits from the government - exactly right. Those paying taxes get some of their own money back. The left hates this since most of their base pays no tax, desires more handouts, and in fact wants higher taxes (on others). They should consider themselves lucky to be paying zero tax!

You talk like Seniors and the Disabled are all in the same boat financially - they aren't.  They are affected by changes made to various laws just like everybody else; some more than others.

I think it is great that the government has determined that we can keep a bit more of our own money, to spend the way we need to or desire and at the same time try to boost economic growth.

You do know that higher COLA payments come from a robust economy.  So if we can figure out some ways to cut Medicare Part B cost in a bipartisan manner, hopefully, maybe the next COLA we get will end up more in the actual Social Security Benefit rather than higher Part B premiums.

I think a whole lot more folks will discover the benefits of the TCJA as we go into 2018.

I read the other day somewhere that some other countries are now considering reducing their corporate rates to keep their edge - who knows, this could become a global corporate tax rate war similar to the gas price wars we have at competing gas stations in our neighborhoods.

We are in a world economy - we all need to realize this and play the game on the world turf.  This could very much be to our benefit as well as other countries.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act also helps the disabled young adults by enhancing the ABLE Act -  The Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act was signed into law a few years ago enabling some disabled people to work if they can and save without reducing government benefits.  Provisions in the new law enhances the immensely popular ABLE Act by allowing disabled Americans the opportunity to work and save more money tax-free, without losing their needed benefits. They will also allow for savings in 529 college savings plans to be rolled over into ABLE accounts tax-free if an individual becomes disabled after a family has already started saving for college.
