That's a long time af.  Power is an addictive drug for which the Power Seeker will do anything...anything at all in the end.

It really doesn't matter much what the motive was at the outset.  Eventually it becomes a matter of maintaining power that has been acquired.  Those initially intending to do 'good' will justifiy the actions taken to remain in power as necessary to achieve 'good'.  After all, only THEY can do that...no one else can be trusted to do it.  Not so?  So....anything goes and so it goes.

Power corrupts....absolute power corrupts absolutely.  An example occupies the White House currently....both houses of Congress as well.  Unfortunately, remarkable as our Constitution is, it is not immune from cynical exploitation and mindless authoritarianism.  To escape Tyranny is why we are a Nation.  Seems we have forgotten that concept.  Hmmmm?

Except 50 years ago, Republicans in Congress did it for campaign support, now it's to promote the continued slaughter of our school kids in their classrooms and on our streets, which increases public fear which boosts gun sales.
