Highly progressive income taxes are essential for a democracy. It's just like when your kids divide the cake for desert - you NEVER let the one who cuts the slices pick the first piece.

That's what the 1964 tax brackets did - when the ones who get to divide the profits made their distribution, they realized every dollar they kept for themselves would have 91 cents go the the Federal Gov't and another nickle go to State and city so they'd only get to keep 4 cents.

They hated their workers, but they hated the Government more, so they gave 96% of all the productivity increases to the workers, and the middle class grew like topsy.

This also paid for REVENUE SHARING the distribution of Federal Taxes back to the States so they didn't have to raise THEIR taxes to pay for infrastructure and everybody who could pass the tests would get a college education WITHOUT borrowing a dime.

The fact is the bottom half of society has NEVER been required to pay the tazes that support the civilization - they need every dime to provide for their families, so forcing them to pay taxes will do nothing but increase misery. That untaxed 50% had "SKIN IN THE GAME" to a degree unheard of in todays Uberrich - that pre-60's bunch became the Greatest Generation when they won WWII instead of doctoring X-rays like Cadet Bonespurs.

Let's restore the middle class before it vanishes altogether by restoring the tax brackets (adjusted for inflation) that made America Great for 40 years and scrap the Reagan taxscam that is turning us into a 3d world country with Nukes.

Exactly.

To many on the right, having to pay taxes is such an egregious sin it shuts down normal thought processes. All they see is someone they hate getting away with paying less than they do and it makes them livid.

I know. Because they care for themselves and not the country as a whole. Being patriotic, truly, means caring for all Americans, so that the country thrives.

Conservatives should be thanking Ocasio-Cortez. The non-stop finger wagging will burn millions of calories over the next two years.

In an upcoming 60 Minutes interview, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) will call for federal income tax rates of up to 70 percent as part of a proposal to create vast new government spending programs.

The current top federal income tax rate is 37 percent, so the Ocasio-Cortez plan will nearly double the tax rate for the top bracket.

New York State has a top income tax rate of 8.82 percent while New York City has a top rate of 3.876 percent. So under this proposal, her constituents would pay a top combined income tax rate of 82.7 percent:

Federal income tax rate:   70.0%
NY state income tax rate: 8.82%
NYC income tax rate:       3.876%
TOTAL:                           82.696%

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Clearly this new Congress person is all about re-distribution of wealth.

Do you folks approve of these numbers?

The "takers" of society (read - the leftists) have no problem with your scenario.

The Top Marginal Rate is meaningless. It is the EFFECTIVE rate that determines how much you pay, and when the TMR was 91%, the effective rate for those earning over $1.4Million (the top 1%) was 42%, leaving them with a miserly $812,000 when the average income for workers was less than $4,300.00

With that system we provided ALL Americans with the highest standard of living, the best health care, the best schools and the average American was able to SAVE 10.2% of their income each year. How much greed and hatred does it take to say what we have now is better for ALL Americans?

Beto O’Rourke supports the “concept” of a Green New Deal, a proposed economic stimulus program designed to transition the U.S. from fossil fuels to 100 percent renewable energy within a decade, joining other potential 2020 presidential candidates in backing the initiative.

Chris Evans, a spokesman for O’Rourke, told HuffPost Friday that the former Texas congressman is “supportive of the concept” of a Green New Deal and its focus on “green job” creation.

“[He] is looking forward to engaging more on the issue as it continues to develop,” Evans said in a statement emailed to the left-wing news outlet. “As he mentioned while traveling to every county across Texas during his senate campaign, he’s proud to come from a renewable energy producing state that is number one in wind power production, number one in wind power jobs and number one in solar energy potential.”

@ManicProgressive

Your description and sequence of events is very telling as to what has happened historically and could happen today. There is a difference in good leadership and authoritarian leadership.

I have often thought that when the wealthy and those in power create underdogs, eventually the underdogs will rise up and become attack dogs...at the point that you have nothing and nothing to lose, why not rail against those who have put you under their thumb.

Is what is taking place today, historically any different today than it was in past history?

The ruling class is selfish and does not have compassion for the rest of society.

If they did, current events would not be unfolding as they are today. The gap between wealth and the rest of society continues to grow.

Almost half of all people pay no net income taxes so the 51% are already supporting the 49%. Several from the left feel that the correct formula for taxes are to have higher limits to the graduated income taxes so that we could conceivably have is 30% of the highest earners supporting the lowest 70% earners.  With that level of disparity, why should the 70% have ANY voice in government since they're NOT paying for it?

That is the sole reason for coming up with new schemes to tax the already overtaxed, like Climate Change taxes.

You can say it's only fair, but to who?

Lets start with the fact that is what one member of Congress thinks and would like to see happen. If you have 100 members of Congress each one of them has something they would like to see happen. Will it? Just about 100% it will not, but it can lead to a policy that will be good for the USA. Now the far right enablers get their orders from the leaders on what to push and how to push it. If you have watched FOX the last few days you saw this subject pushed, and now it has arrived here as a very important subject from the far right. We see the old far right 51% nonsense added into it and how they really carry everything. Sadly when this is pushed by the enablers they are not in the upper 1% so really are being hurt just like all the middle class but they do not understand that.  These are the same people who have been posting they do not care about the 800,000 govt. workers laid off and hurting. They tell us it does not effect them, and that tells all they are far right. The far right have never done anything but hurt people for the last 200 years or more. Do not be fooled by them, and it is a waste of time to try and discuss this or any subject with them as they understand none of them.
