Re: Support for $15 Minimum Wage Plummets When Americans Are Told Its Economic Impact

IF  the $15 how minimum wage is allowed to go into effect by the regressives, it will improve the finances of millions of Americans. It will reduce the welfare and food stamp rolls. It will force some marginal businesses out but no more than a raise in raw material costs.

Minimum wage laws, I’ve noted, are popular with the public. This no doubt explains why House Democrats passed a bill Thursday that would raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.

That's true.

For decades political campaigns have been funded primarily by the rich and powerful, which explains why laws passed by Congress favor them. Many people who earned at or around minimum wage didn't vote, no less donate to their candidates.

In recent years smaller dollar donations are playing a bigger role in politics. There are more people today who earn less than $15 making donations to candidates. Politicians are taking notice.

It took Congress 10 years to increase the minimum wage 1997-2007.

It's been 10 years since the last minimum wage increase - 2009 to present.

The $15 Min wage will cause inflation.

Tell us about the places you visited that it caused inflation. You can not because it did not. Now the things you list are happening everywhere and a higher minimum wage has nothing to do with it. McDonalds has already put in ordering stations, and Wal Mart is doing the same thing with cashiers along with every other business. To business labor is a major expense, and you try to get expenses to zero if possible, and that is what business is doing. That is how they make money. The fact is a higher minimum wage does not cause any of the things you talk about. There is a sea port in China which is fully automated. Few employees working it. Machines and computers do the work. It was on TV last week. That will happen here in the US over the next few years. The few workers who are at the new port are very well paid. We should have a higher minimum wage now, and then make sure we start to train people for the new type of jobs that are coming no matter what you do with the wage. The far right does not understand this subject.

Richva:  the impact of a $15 minimum wage would be to get millions of full time employed persons off publc support.

That's exactly the point I tried to make.

KidBoy2:  The shame is that many that are on what you call safety net programs will go from being on programs like food stamps to being on welfare...they, instead of having a job and be proud of it will go on 100% government programs.

That makes zero sense. Care to explain the logic?

$15   in   2025 ??    By then ....   millions more will be  living in poverty..,   meaning  more people on welfare starving them slowly to punish them for being poor.   .

The republican agenda is for no birth control or abortion (religious reasons of course )  .and     Increase the population to  where workers will work cheaper who will be desperate to find a job in a job market that is so scarce due to  increased robatics and technology... .

This is the trickle--UP   idea to create an aristocratic society with ,  no middle class and just the working  poor.    Making the country GREAT AGAIN.

People need to work...people that do not work and are on welfare as a rule are not happy which leads to crime, child abuse, etc., etc.

Only problem with your argument is what you imagine happening never happened and never will. Clinton ended the problem while he created TWO $300
Billion SURPLUSES in the Federal Budget.

The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA) limits the receipt of SNAP benefits to 3 months in a 36-month period for able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) who are not working at least 80 hours per month, or participating in qualifying education and training activities.

UNLESS THEIR PARENTS LEAVE THEM HUGE TRUST FUNDS - then they NEVER hold a job and have no idea why anyone would waste time working when it interfers with leisure. For THOSE people, GOPers invent HUGE subsidities via the tax code so they not only never work, they never pay their fair share of taxes and 4000 pay no Federal taxes whatsoever on their incomes above $1,000,000.

But feeding the poor is too "socialist" for GOPers who perfer Social Darwinism wherein the poor starve, sicken and die as the God of GOPers intended.
