Common Core is a state initiative, never a federal one.  Conservatives should love it.

It’s an educational standards framework. Schools are free to choose which curricula they want to use to meet that framework. National standards testing has been around since the 90s. As others have said, Bush signed off on such standards testing mandates with No Child Left Behind in 2001. I really applauded him for that. But it doesn’t work.

Kids are not doing well with it.

I’ve had kids in public and private schools. Anecdotal only, but the private schools can and do tailor educational approaches to individual children, to ensure that no matter where they start in ability, they end up achieving their best. The teachers have more flexibility. They don’t have to teach to the test. And most critical, they are provided with both appropriate training and support. If we were willing to fund the necessary investment in public schools to replicate that approach, our kids would kick b*** globally.  But it costs money, and so many people whine and moan about paying taxes. We need to start treating teachers like the professionals they are.

Read “Dream Hoarders” and see how providing just an average teacher (instead of a bad teacher) to low income kids increases the kids’ lifetime earnings by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Imagine if we could give them the best teachers....

The GOP won't be happy until American schools are graduating seniors that can barely read or do basic math again. That way they can beat the "workers are uneducated" drum, and use it as an excuse to keep wages low.

The answer is no based on what we see here. Legitmate sources aren't going to factually back up conspiracies and outright BS.

jimc91:  Barack Obama’s Common Core program is a complete failure

Of course............everyone knows the way to educate kids properly is to repeatedly cut education funding.

This is hilarious. An entire think piece predicated on a completely false statement, that Common Core was an Obama thing.

Oh, BTW, George W.'s "No Child Left Behind" is considered largely a failure by everyone including teachers, administrators and parents. The entire country's education system now teaches rigidly to the test and nothing else. But, as the GOP hoped, it sure does tend to create a whole generation of robots who blindly follow instructions as issued from above. Perfect for being the worker bees in the new American oligarchy.

Just echoing the other comments. Yes, Common Core failed by everything that I am aware of. But, as stated:

".....Designed to raise student proficiencies so the United States can better compete in a global market, the standards were drafted in 2009 by a group of academics and assessment specialists at the request of the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. With widespread bipartisan support from such ideological opponents as U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, as well as the business community, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in 2010 the standards sailed remarkably fast through adoption in 40 states and the District of Columbia. Five more states embraced them over the next two years....".

And, the public, as a whole, embraced this (sans teachers). The odds are that your family, friends, neighbors thought this was a good idea, unless they were educators themselves.

It is simply grossly incorrect to call this program a failure of Obama. This was a 'rational' idea, borne of good intentions, that did not work out.

The study, like all Republican "statistics", was produced to achieve the objectives of the Heritage Foundation, which, as it was when the group was founded, is to provide an academic sounding justification for Republican policies.

FACT - SAT scores for all groups have INCREASED since 2009

Over all, Composite went from 1010 to 1067.

For Blacks, the increase was 862 to 919

       Hispanics, 922 to 1005

       Whites, 1061 to 1077

This after decades of falling scores, mostly due to Republican War on Education that drove the best teachers away and failed totally to maintain the educational infrastructure our parents and grandparents had built and maintained since the 1900's

I don't recall that the Obama administration (or President Obama himself) led or pushed the Common Core initiative. Certainly President "W" Bush pushed the "No child left behind" for education. But I don't ever recall Obama pushing the Common core.

From some research on the internet ("always reliable") it appears that the "CC" was driven by a consortium of states.

A 2011 publication from Harvard University Graduate School of Education discusses "myths" about Common Core (http://hepg.org/hel-home/issues/27_5/helarticle/five-myths-about-the-common-core-state-standards_5) and indicates:

"Myth #2 The Common Core State Standards are an Obama administration initiative.
The Obama administration is a strong supporter of the Common Core State Standards initiative, but the administration did not lead it. The initiative was, and continues to be, state-led.

No federal official was on the work teams and feedback groups that developed the standards. Then, once the standards were released, forty-five states and the District of Columbia—each acting on its own—chose to adopt the standards.

The Obama administration clearly supported the effort. ..."

I'm thinking the premise of the OP is inaccurate, that President Obama and his administration are "responsible" for the Common Core and should reap either the praise or the blame for this program.

I'm thinking "why even post this now? in the Political forum?" Just to stir up some tar? Well, I suppose it is the "Politics and Society" forum. Still though, I think we're just stirring up some tar here.

Study: Obama’s Common Core ‘Worst Large-Scale Educational Failure in 40 Years’

Barack Obama’s Common Core program is a complete failure that has produced “sharp drops” in student performance across the country, according to researchers who conducted a study into the impact of the controversial educational reform.

Declaring Obama’s Common Core to be “worst large-scale educational failure in 40 years,” the study examined the effects of Common Core on school choice and found the program has “blunted the innovation, dynamism, and competition” while also producing the worst math scores in generations.

Ted Rebarber of AccountabilityWorks co-authored the study with Cato Institute’s Neal McCluskey, who previously led another study, titled “Common Core, School Choice and Rethinking Standards-Based Reform,” which was published by the Boston-based Pioneer Institute.

Parents and teachers across the US are now urging the Trump administration to dump the Common Core curriculum, arguing that it deliberately dumbs down children and creates unnecessary and complicated methods for working out relatively simple problems.

Academic researchers Ted Rebarber and Neal McCluskey agree that it’s time to ditch the toxic program. Speaking at a Heritage Foundation event last week, the pair explained how Common Core has not only damaged public-school education but also created obstacles for choosing schools.

Rebarber highlighted the danger when politicians submit to the allure of standards-based educational reforms.

Standards become the blueprint around which schools organize their teaching, their day-to-day academic operations,” he said.

They’re effectively curriculum central planning by government.

In the study, the authors observed that since Common Core was implemented in 45 states and Washington, DC, students have demonstrated sharp drops in academic performance. Students who were already performing poorly– many of them minority students – declined even further.

Yet, in the name of accountability, when private school choice programs receive taxpayer-funded vouchers, they are often forced to adopt the curriculum on which the state standardized test is based. In most cases, that curriculum is aligned with Common Core.

Socialist education

Common Core blunts the innovation, dynamism, and competition that is the heart of the school choice movement,” McCluskey noted.

Common Core was sold to the nation not only as a set of standards that was “rigorous” and designed to encourage higher levels of achievement but also as a program that would shrink the achievement gap between middle-class students and those from the lower socioeconomic levels.

Instead, it shrunk everybody’s achievements.

In April of 2016, only about 37 percent of U.S. 12th graders were shown to be prepared for math and reading at the college level, according to the 2015 NAEP – also known as the Nation’s Report Card.

Since Obama introduced Common Core, the United States has also fallen from near the top of international rankings for the first time in modern history.

Results released by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) showed that on the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), the U.S. has declined in performance from fifth in international ranking in 2011 to 13th in 2016 out of 58 international education systems.

We seem to be declining as other education systems record larger gains on the assessment,” said Peggy G. Carr, acting commissioner for the federal NCES, according to the Washington Post.
