There have been many lies or misconceptions exposed throughout the years.

What puzzles me is how so many have fell victim to all of the fake and false news that has been put into our social media by the Russians and then spread so quickly by others without them checking the validity of what the have read. Many have formed their political and social opinions based on those falsehoods and lies. It's obvious that the Russians have used this to influence the outcome of our elections. This has contributed to the closed mindedness of many of those who supported and voted for trump. I hope that this article will perhaps provoke thought in some about the opinions they have formed over what they have read on our social medias.

Fake News: Lies spread faster on social media than truth does People are quicker to repeat something that's wrong than something that's true

If it seems like fake news is everywhere, that may be because it is.

Falsehoods spread like wildfire on social media, getting quicker and longer-lasting pickup than the truth, researchers reported on Thursday.

A deep dive into Twitter shows that false news was re-tweeted more often than true news was, and carried further.

“Falsehood diffused significantly farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information, and the effects were more pronounced for false political news than for false news about terrorism, natural disasters, science, urban legends, or financial information,” the team, led bySinan Aral of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wrote in the journal Science.

“It took the truth about six times as long as falsehood to reach 1,500 people.”

And it wasn’t bots spreading most of the falsehoods, they found. It was real people doing most of it. Usually ordinary people, too, they found: so-called ‘verified’ users and those with many followers were not usually the source of some of the most popular untrue viral posts.

MY COMMENT:

Everyone should read this article, it's eye opening, especially for those who have read nothing about this issue before. The falsehoods the Russians have permeated our social media with is exasperating and dangerous to our democratic elections process and the well being of our country and our democracy.
