Heres the thing - in the 1950's there was No Globilization - each Country built their own stuff in their own little Silos and sold some of what they built to other Countries - Sure they may have purchased the Raw Materials from other Countries but the made most of their stuff in-house

Today, Globilization has created a Global Raw Material & Manufacturing Components Supply Chain..............take the US Auto Industry as a Prime Example - most Americans think of Auto Zone or NAPA or Pep Boys for Auto Parts........................Ford GMC Fiat BMW - Etc. think of Canada & Mexico....................................

In fact Foreign Made parts make up better than 50% of Most - " US Manufatured Vehicles - it's difficult to determine the exact percentage because Canada supplies so many parts to the US Auto Manufacturing Process the US Government does not break Canadian Made Parts down seperately from US Made Parts

However American Universitys Kogard Business School Does Takes the Process at least a Step Further

Bottomline - Globilization means just that rather each Countries Manufacturung process being contained into it's own Domestic Silo.......................almost every Manufacturer in every Country is entertwined with every other Countries around the Globe

Trumps approach to Trade might have been at least worthy of discussion in the 1950's - today it once again demonstrates how uninformed and ridiculous his attempts to threaten other Countries - it's virtually impossible without destroying our own Manufacturers because they are part of the exact same system he's threatening to destroy...........................

The cost of a car with 35% imported parts would increase by $2,000 with a 25% tariff on parts, according to the American Automotive Policy Council. Toyota (TM) estimates the cost of the Camry, which is built in its plant in Kentucky and is the nation's best-selling sedan, would rise by $1,800 from the parts tariffs. And General Motors (GM) has warned tariffs could force the company to cut jobs at US plants due to an expected drop in sales associated with higher prices.

For those paying attention - Trump is once again embarking on a Catchy Bumper Sticker Slogan Policy that will appeal to his base and is guaranteed to break something but again like Health Insurance - The Iran Deal - TPP - Paris Climate Accords - Immigration - Etc.

The map posted in the topic provides solid factual information. Your post also provides solid factual information. Too bad trump cultists are incapable of understanding any of it, they will still support trump's tariffs.

My take on it is:    The permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest and the corporations have to be paid for. The tariffs are actually a tax on the American consumer, so the American consumer will be paying for the tax cuts that were given to the corporations and the wealthiest Americans. In a way, the tariffs are a tax on the 99%, a very expensive tax which will have nothing but negative and damaging repercussions to our people, our economy, and the wrold's.

ChasKy53:  My ignorant brother-in-law thinks that the tariffs are "negotiations" that will 'bring jobs to America'.

Oh my. Does he have a time frame, or is he going to be patient and keep thinking the jobs will arrive soon?

My ignorant brother-in-law thinks that the tariffs are "negotiations" that will 'bring jobs to America'.  Reminds me of mentally challenged posters here who can only repeat the same lies that they also hear.
