"We" aren't ... It's the Republican controlled gutless Trump fearing Senate morons that are "confirming idiots to the Supreme Court".

Roberts is saving religious people from themselves.  Churches were a huge hotspot of infection when this all started.  Everyone I know who's a regular church goer is pretty happy with zoom services.   They miss the socialization of course, but they feel comfortable with the worship  aspect of it.  And yes, I know that's anecdotal....but these are crazy times.   Innovation is a good thing.

He's not a great writer, either.  I am a little surprised by that.   But whatever.  I agree.  He's an idiot.

“We’re dealing here with a highly contagious and often fatal disease for which there presently is no known cure,” the majority wrote in an unsigned opinion that went on to quote a famous dissent from a 1947 Supreme Court decision. “In the words of Justice Robert Jackson, if a ‘court does not temper its doctrinaire logic with a little practical wisdom, it will convert the constitutional Bill of Rights into a suicide pact.’”

WOO HOO indeed!. Looks like Roberts may become the "swing vote" to curb the nazified SCOTUS the GOPers have been driving toward for the past 30 years. Unlike the other four GOPerDupes on the bench, Roberts seems to be concerned about going down in History as presiding over the first totally POLITICAL Supreme Court in living memory.

Now we'll have to see if States who've been Gerrymandered Red (Kansas, Wisconsin, Ohio) will be able to kill their citizens for profit  - Kansas looks like the first to "open" itself into a huge spike in infection and death. Will the surviving GOPers notice what wasdone to them come November, or will the Republican Ministry of Propaganda continue to deceive them into thinking being protected from social decency is worth dying for.

WOO-HOO!   Church going is just another social activity:

"The precise question of when restrictions on particular social activities should be lifted during the pandemic is a dynamic and fact-intensive matter subject to reasonable disagreement," Roberts wrote.

The chief justice, an appointee of President George W. Bush, said it was not the role of judges to substitute their judgment for health experts and elected officials who appear to be acting in good faith.

ICYMI:   a religious group went whining to SCOTUS about the CA GOV limiting their ability to fill a building.   https://www.politico.com/news/2020/05/29/supreme-court-denies-illinois-churches-lockdown-relief-2901...
