If racial resentment is the biggest indicator regarding attitude about immigration, does that mean racial resentment is behind the establishment of national borders?

Remember, it is the enforcement of national borders that is the issue, not immigration.

No.  Did you read the article?  Or better, the actual study?  It says that racial resentment, more than economic anxiety, is the biggest predictor of negative attitudes toward immigrants.   Doesn't matter if they are legal or illegal.   Has nothing to do with the border.   Trump is going after legal immigrants as well.   DACA, TPS, temporary employment visas, immigrants in the military, green card holders, naturalized citizens, etc.

Actual study:  https://github.com/svmiller/earr/blob/master/earr.pdf

It makes sense.  Immigrants vary widely in income and education levels.  But 80% of immigrants are people of color.

But 100% of those emtering illegally are entering illegally. It is a border issue, not a racial issue.

Yes, the op/ed writer saw racism. Some see racism - white guilt - white privilege -  in everything. But, consider the numbers above.

That's the Palestinians' position, too.

non sequitur

What, nations don't have borders in the Middle East? If anything, this thread highlights the continuing right wing racial resentment toward immigrants, regardless of where in the world they are.

True , all nations have borders or they do not exist - that is why I posted, "Remember, it is the enforcement of national borders that is the issue".

And then came your non sequitur about the Palestinians and the strange one above about supposed "right wing racial resentment" - that is totally unrelated to the need for borders. Might as well throw in the usual "Nazi" nonsense.

National borders and immigration has gone hand and hand since antiquity.  Remember the Israelites left Egypt to go to the Land of Canaan.  The Romans built Hadrian's Wall to control the national borders between what is now England and Scotland.  Don't forget the Great Wall of China with guard posts at certain points to facilitate trade but to keep others out.

Checkpoints have been used throughout history to control travel and immigration.  National borders and immigration go hand in hand.

Does immigration not involve crossing national borders, legally or illegally? In that reality our posters want to find their claimed "racism".
