So what if he was? Why is Trump still having campaign rallies anyway?
Two reasons - one, it is his way to communicate with his base and second he is supporting candidates.
Trump doesn't need to hold campaign rallies to communicate with his base. He does that daily on Twitter. Besides, he shouldn't even be trying to communicate solely with his base anyway. He needs to communicate with all Americans.
Not everyone twitters - besides, a rally is a different environment in which he does very well. His message is for all Americans but there are some that do not want to hear it or see it implemented.
We all know that those rallies are for Trump and no one else. He needs to feed his giant ego. And as his poll numbers get lower and lower, I'm sure he'll have them even more often.
"We all know" is a biased way to start a sentence.

What was office was Obama running for?

Doing the same as his predecessors did when campaigning for party candidates.

Nope! Went because he wanted to see a sitting president, even though he didn’t agree with his agenda. According to a story in the NYT, the young man was told by trump staffers that he had been chosen to sit in the VIP section, a decision which seems to have been made at random. Speech goers were told they were to clap and cheer for trump, but clearly this young man had much more integrity than some of the puppets in the crowd. Further, he had no idea he was on camera until his friends started texting him mid way through the speech.
The trump people said they vet people who are to stand behind the president, but seems they are as inept at their jobs as trump is at his! The kid was wearing a pin that said Socialist Democrat.
This kid was not there under “false pretenses.” That honor goes to the donald as “the plaid guy’s” reactions indicate. Watching him react to trump’s lies, exaggerations, whacked out statements, and inaccuracies was priceless. Once his two friends realized he wasn’t coming back, they left too.
BTW, the girl who replaced them really was a trump fan as she immediately flashed a white power sign. Yeah, trump attracts the best of the worst that society has to offer.
Gee, I miss having a real president!
There was much conjecture in that about the kid. But I agree, a guy wearing a Socialist Democrat button didn't belong in that position.
Now, about that white power sign - that was the same claim that was made about the Judge Kavanaugh hearings. You lefties see (or create) racism everywhere. But, hey, it's part of your marching orders.
But it wasn't a "leftie" that flashed the white power sign, so take it up with the lady that did.

Yup, the fool has “campaign rallies” to stir up the hatred within the base and spread his fetid lies!
Gee, I miss having a real president!

Plaid Shirt Guy at Trump Rally
People who sit behind Trump at rallies are picked by the Trump team, a black person, a person with a hard hat, people with MAGA hats, that sort of thing.
If they pick people who don't or can't follow the drill they have no one to blame but themselves.
It's just another example of Trump being unprepared.
