As usual, more smokescreen blather from the right to cover up the obscene policies and appointees by the trump administration. And denial of the welfare program for the wealthy... by repubs.

Interesting that JimC did not name the topic: “Our ignorance of authoritarianism

is dangerous”.

That seems like a more applicable topic as to what is happening in our Country and the World.

And NH, Scout knows what he’s talking about!

It is entirely possible for intelligent people to discuss some subjects with feeling the need to throw in trump (with a small "t").

It is true, jim did not use authoritarian in the title. There is no reason such a topic could not be started.

Do you have any thoughts on this topic?

You mention  'intelligent people to discuss some subjects" without spelling trump with a small 't' ............... yet you spell Jim's name with a "small 't'".  Are you denigrating Jimc?

Got anything on the topic?

What the hell does "Socialism ligh" mean?  I suspect you cannot define Socialism or socialism light (or heavy or wide or soft or hard.....). If you cannot define the term, how can you educate us of its dangers?

I remember an old Robert Heinlien book where they sent people off to a wilderness with the warning "Beware the Stobor".  After that, every new danger the individuals and groups encountered were deemed to be THE STOBOR.  Looks like you are making the same kind of warning.  "Beware the msilaicos!!!!"

If you read Marx you will understand full blown Socialism as a step towards Communism. The basic difference being that under Socialism everybody has the same, under Communism "we the people" represented by the government owns everything. As to Socialism light, you'll have to ask those who think that public libraries define Socialism.

The danger is taking those small steps away from individual freedom towards "we the people" collectivism and getting to the point of dependency and unable to come back.

What that has to do with "msilaicos" is a mystery

The point of the topic was to discuss it not to post, "Conservatives think this and Conservatives think that". @rk9152............There is no real discussion here. There are posters who say the same thing over and over, the ones who think their posts are so cute, the ones who say they are so educated, but can't make a good sentence, and those who try to continue to bait. Instead of being called "Politics and Current Events" perhaps some here can come up with a new title.

From the original article posted:

When the tragedies of socialist regimes—such as those in Venezuela, the USSR, China, Cuba, and many others—are pointed out to America’s leftists, they hold up Sweden as their socialist role model. But they are absolutely wrong about Sweden.

Johan Norberg points this out in his documentary “Sweden: Lessons for America?” Americans might be surprised to learn that Sweden’s experiment with socialism was a relatively brief flirtation, lasting about 20 years and ending in disillusionment and reform.

Reason magazine reports:

Sweden began rolling back government in the early 1990s, recapturing the entrepreneurial spirit that made it a wealthy country to begin with. High taxation and a generous array of government benefits are still around. But now it’s also a nation of school vouchers, free trade, open immigration, light business regulation, and no minimum wage laws.

School vouchers, light business regulation, and no minimum wage laws are practices deeply offensive to America’s leftists.

The topic?  I guess our ignorance of Socialism is dangerous since:
  • Conservatives can not define the term
  • Conservatives believe that more efficient, cost effective, and more effective ways of delivering services as demonstrated by real world experiences must be "Socialist" for reasons they cannot articulate.
  • Conservatives believe every liberal is a socialist. This is a bit like claiming every liberal is a member of Antifa (of course, we all WANT to be)
  • Conservatives continue to distribute this misinformation.

Any possibility that we could honestly look at the reality that due to various degrees and definitions PEOPLE do not understand the meaning and potential dangers of Socialism?

There is no need to mind read and claim to know what others are thinking in an honest discussion. In that instance a PERSON states what they think.

I congratulate jim on trying to get an interesting discussion going. But it has become obvious that some only get defensive when the topic comes up. I don't understand why - the antithesis is Free Market Capitalism and I gladly state and defend my approval of it.

This HAS been an interesting discussion. Do you realize that NOT ONCE was anyone provided  a definition of Socialism?  Well, I did but I took it from the dictionary.  The folks on the right had no idea what they meant by the term and the folks on the left were more interested in whether a set of programs were more or less effective than what was currently in place.

If you can't define what you mean, how can you pretend the ignorance of others is dangerous?

The meaning of the word was jim's point. And I posted that it is thought of here as everywhere from Marx's theory in toto on one end to public libraries on the other.

Since you are totally avoiding authoritarianism, let’s try this:

How are @Richva and I socialists?

What criteria do we fit in?

I don't believe I have. However, there is a lot of unexplained defensiveness on the subject.

I am not avoiding authoritarianism. Start a topic and I'll gladly interact with you. It does not apply here because it spreads across areas other than Socialism (although, as we have seen, Socialism can take a nation there).
