Origin of Coronavirus

State Department leaked cables renew theories on origin of coronavirus

A Chinese laboratory at the center of new theories about how the coronavirus pandemic started was the subject of multiple urgent warnings inside the U.S. State Department two years ago, according to a new report.

U.S. Embassy officials warned in January 2018 about inadequate safety at the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab and passed on information about scientists conducting risky research on coronavirus from bats, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

IF CHINA ACTED EARLIER, CORONAVIRUS CASES COULD HAVE BEEN CUT BY AS MUCH AS 95 PERCENT, FDA CHIEF

Those cables have renewed speculation inside the U.S. government about whether Wuhan-based labs were the source of the novel coronavirus, although no firm connection has been established. The theory, however, has gained traction in recent days.

Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Tuesday afternoon, "It should be no surprise to you that we have taken a keen interest in that and we've had a lot of intelligence take a hard look at that. I would just say at this point, it's inconclusive, although the weight of evidence seems to indicate natural, but we don't know for certain."

The United Kingdom has said that the idea that the virus, which has turned into a full-blown global pandemic, was leaked from a Wuhan lab is "no longer being discounted."

A member of the U.K. government's emergency committee of senior officials claimed Sunday: "There is a credible alternative view (to the zoonotic theory) based on the nature of the virus. Perhaps it is no coincidence that there is a laboratory in Wuhan."

Foreign affairs expert Gordon Chang said in a recent opinion piece on Fox News that "many Chinese believe the virus either was deliberately released or accidentally escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a P4-level bio-safety facility."

He added: "This lab, known for studying coronaviruses, is not far from the market that had been initially identified as the source of the outbreak."

In a series of diplomatic cables labeled "Sensitive But Unclassified," U.S. Embassy officials warned that the lab had massive management weaknesses, posed severe health risks and warned Washington to get involved.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CORONAVIRUS

The first cable, which was obtained by the Post, also sent red flags about the lab's work on bat coronaviruses and more specifically how their potential human transmission represented the risk of a new SARS-like pandemic.

"During interactions with scientists at the WIV laboratory, they noted the new lab has a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high-containment laboratory," the Jan.19, 2018 cable, written by two officials from the embassy's environment, science and health sections who met with the WIV scientists, said.

The cable argued that the United States should give Chinese researchers at the Wuhan lab more support because its research on bat coronaviruses was important and dangerous. The lab had already been receiving assistance from the Galveston National Laboratory at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

AUSTRALIA'S PM SAYS IT'S 'UNFATHOMABLE' THAT WHO SUPPORTS REOPENING OF WET MARKETS

The cable also called attention to Shi Zhengli, the head of the research project, who in November 2017 published a paper that showed the horseshoe bats collected from a case in Yunnan province were most likely from the same bat population that had been behind the first SARS coronavirus in 2003.

The cable states that "the researchers also showed that various SARS-like coronaviruses can interact with ACE2, the human receptor identified for SARS-coronavirus. This finding strongly suggests that SARS-like coronaviruses from bats can be transmitted to humans to cause SARS-like diseases. From a public health perspective, this makes the continued surveillance of SARS-like coronaviruses in bats and study of the animal-human interface critical to future emerging coronavirus outbreak prediction and prevention."

Despite evidence that points to dangerous practices inside the Wuhan labs, top U.S. military brass, as well as other senior officials, have told Fox News that the origins of COVID-19 did not come from a laboratory nor was it the result of a bioweapon.

"And if I could just be clear, there is nothing to that," Air Force Brig. Gen. Paul Friedrichs told Fox News last week. "Someone asked me if I was worried. That is not something that I'm worried about. I think, you know, right now what we're concerned about is how do we treat people who are sick, how do we prevent people from getting sick. But no, I am not worried about this as a bioweapon."

Dr. Fauci throws cold water on conspiracy theory that coronavirus escaped a Chinese lab

  • Dr. Anthony Fauci at the White House on Friday rejected a conspiracy theory that the novel coronavirus was created in a Chinese lab.

  • Fauci, the nation's top expert on infectious disease, said the available evidence on the origins of the virus is "totally consistent with a jump of a species from an animal to a human."

  • Fox News and Republican allies of President Donald Trump have been pushing the lab narrative hard in recent days, despite a lack of hard evidence to back it up.

The U.S. is conducting a full-scale investigation into whether the novel coronavirus, which went on to morph into a global pandemic that has brought the global economy to its knees, escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China, Fox News has learned.

Intelligence operatives are said to be gathering information about the laboratory and the initial outbreak of the virus. Intelligence analysts are piecing together a timeline of what the government knew and “creating an accurate picture of what happened,” the sources said.

Fox News has learned.

Fox News has learned from whom? Elves? The tooth fairy? Three blind mice?

Intelligence operatives are said to be gathering information

What the hell is an intelligence operative? From what intelligence agency? Are they even American operatives?

Notice Fox does NOT write, "Intelligence operatives say."

They write, "Intelligence operatives "are said to."

"Said to" by whom?

This is ridiculous. It's inane. This is third-hand hearsay. Not only would this garbage not be admissible in court, it would be unprintable in any newspaper or website with any credibility at all. This is made up out of whole cloth.

Hell, I can do this:

"My sources, backed up by intelligence operatives known to me, say Donald Trump is a big weenie head."

An investigation onto this allegation is ongoing, sources, operatives, and Disney characters inform this reporter. Later tonight, watch Donald Duck verify this on Hannity.

My only regret is that The National Lampoon ceased publishing. Can you imagine the fun they would have had with this idiocy?

This is part of an ongoing process within every cult. The members always look for and find a scapegoat for their leader. In this case, Trump is their Supreme Leader in the White House and they cannot allow him to accept any responsibility for a negative impact from the corona virus.

Always remember, in a cult, the leader can never be held accountable for anything negative. When something bad happens, the cult members search far and wide for a scapegoat. We've seen this playbook played out repeatedly the past 3 1/2 years.

Here are the FACTS from real scientists

A dozen virus experts discussed  the origins of the outbreak, and all of them say anyone who claims to know the source of Covid-19 is guessing. The scientists say there is zero evidence the Chinese or American government purposefully introduced the new coronavirus to the public.

To date, one thing seems likely: It probably came from bats.

US officials confirm full-scale investigation of whether coronavirus escaped from Wuhan lab

The U.S. is conducting a full-scale investigation into whether the novel coronavirus, which went on to morph into a global pandemic that has brought the global economy to its knees, escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China, Fox News has learned.

Intelligence operatives are said to be gathering information about the laboratory and the initial outbreak of the virus. Intelligence analysts are piecing together a timeline of what the government knew and “creating an accurate picture of what happened,” the sources said.

Once that investigation is complete -- something that is expected to happen in the near-term -- the findings will be presented to the Trump administration. At that point White House policymakers and President Trump will use the findings to determine how to hold the country accountable for the pandemic.

Fox News first reported on Wednesday that there is increasing confidence that the outbreak likely originated in a Wuhan lab, not as a bioweapon but as part of a Chinese effort to show that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal or greater than those of the U.S.

U.S. officials and the intelligence community have confirmed to Fox News that they have taken the possibility of the coronavirus being man-made or engineered inside China as some sort of bioweapon off the table and have ruled it out at this point.

Sources point to the structure of the virus, in saying the genome mapping specifically shows it was not genetically altered. The sources believe the initial transmission of the virus was a naturally occurring strain that was being studied there -- and then went into the population in Wuhan.

Sources say the investigation of open source and classified data points to the work in the lab of Dr. Shi Zhengli, who was working on antivirals and immunizations for coronavirus, specifically with bats.

SOURCES BELIEVE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK ORIGINATED IN WUHAN LAB AS PART OF CHINA'S EFFORTS TO COMPETE W...

US officials are 100 percent confident China went to great lengths to cover up after the virus was out, the sources said.

Additionally, the sources believe that the World Health Organization -- which the president paused funding to this week over its role in the crisis -- was either complicit in the coverup, or looked the other way.

The president hinted at an investigation on Wednesday when he told Fox News’ John Roberts: "More and more we're hearing the story...we are doing a very thorough examination of this horrible situation."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday reiterated that the administration was eyeing the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and accused the Chinese government of stonewalling scientists from finding out what happened.

“We know that the first sightings of this occurred within miles of the Wuhan Institute of Virology.  We know that this – the history of the facility, the first BSL-4 lab where there’s high-end virus research being conducted, took place at that site,” Pompeo said on the Hugh Hewitt Show. “We know that the Chinese Communist Party, when it began to evaluate what to do inside of Wuhan, considered whether the WIV was, in fact, the place where this came from.”

“And most importantly, we know they’ve not permitted the world’s scientists to go into that laboratory to evaluate what took place there, what’s happening there, what’s happening there even as we speak,” he said.

There has been speculation for months, not just in the U.S., that the virus originated in a Chinese laboratory. A February study on the origins of the virus from the South China University of Technology concluded: “In addition to origins of natural recombination and intermediate host, the killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan."

Should it turn out that the virus escaped from a Chinese laboratory, the global pushback against the Chinese government could be significant. The virus has infected and killed hundreds of thousands of people and ravaged economies across the globe. Trump, who has frequently taken a hardline towards China even before the crisis, would be expected to lead calls to make Beijing face consequences.

During Thursday's daily press briefing, China's foreign ministry pushed back on claims that anything suspicious had taken place in the Wuhan lab and reiterated there was no evidence that the coronavirus, which has infected more than 2 million people globally, was made there.

"The head of the WHO has stated many times that there is no evidence that the new coronavirus originated in the laboratory," spokesperson Zhao Lijian said. "Many prominent medical experts in the world also believe that the so-called laboratory leaks have no scientific basis."

3rd time you posted the same article. Why? The Sec. of Defence told us on TV the virus was not man made.  Lets move on to something that might help us get back to normal. You see these demos all over the country right now all planned by the far right Trump enablers. Trump told us in his 2 hr. TV story telling time yesterday that these people like him, and he would not tell them to obey the rules. That tells you Trump is behind this and as usual using FOX to get the word out to his enablers to go down the new path. The word has not gotten to all yet so we will see stories that China created the virus on purpose. Sad we all have to go through this due to the far right. In Nov. we can hopeffly free our selves of this problem by voting Trump and all far right out.

Doesn't really matter if Covid19 began in some research lab or a bowl of bat soup.

DOES matter that the Toad KNEW is was coming for us last DECEMBER, but ignored his intelligence briefings, took the word of Xi, and DID NOTHING FOR 63 DAYS!

Taiwan knew at the same time we did, but THEY HAD NOT ELECTED A PSYCHOTIC MORON, so they took action to isolate themselves and now have 393 cases (116 already recovered) and SIX (6) deaths AND NO NEW CASES FOR 3 DAYS. But to keep "his numbers" good tRump the Toad DID NOTHING and gave us 614,246 infected with 26,024 DEATHS, not counting many who died at home but were not tested post-mortum... SO FAR and there's no end in sight.

The gutless draft-dodging twit whom Putin (with help from Fox) slithered into the White House has now killed more Americans than the German Army did in the Battle of the Bulge when 17,000 brave souls were lost, PLUS  over 5,000 KIA at Antietam.

I'd like to ask about something that matters.  Where are we on these testing kits?

Two weeks ago, Trump brought word of an innovative diagnostic test that can produce results in minutes instead of days or a week. The U.S. testing system, key to containing the spread of infection, has been a failure in the crunch, as public health authorities (but never Trump) acknowledged in March. The rapid test could help change that.

Like other glimmers of hope that may or may not come to something, Trump held out these tests as a “whole new ballgame.” The new machines and testing cartridges are being sent across the country, and may well hold promise. But they are not ready for actual use in large numbers.

This thread is another example of right wing conspiracy theories.

Remember, in a cult, the Supreme Leader is never held accountable for anything negative. Therefore, when things go badly, his cult members search far and wide for a scapegoat, where they can place the blame. Hey, Trump Cult members found a potential scapegoat with this highly improbable, make believe story.

In this case, there is no scientific evidence to support this conspiracy theory. In fact, the overwhelming majority of scientists believe this theory is worthless.

Sources believe coronavirus outbreak originated in Wuhan lab as part of China's efforts to compete with US

There is increasing confidence that the COVID-19 outbreak likely originated in a Wuhan laboratory, though not as a bioweapon but as part of China's attempt to demonstrate that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal to or greater than the capabilities of the United States, multiple sources who have been briefed on the details of early actions by China's government and seen relevant materials tell Fox News.

This may be the "costliest government cover-up of all time," one of the sources said.

The sources believe the initial transmission of the virus – a naturally occurring strain that was being studied there – was bat-to-human and that "patient zero" worked at the laboratory, then went into the population in Wuhan.

The “increasing confidence” comes from classified and open-source documents and evidence, the sources said. Fox News has requested to see the evidence directly. Sources emphasized -- as is often the case with intelligence -- that it’s not definitive and should not be characterized as such. Some inside the administration and the intelligence and epidemiological communities are more skeptical, and the investigation is continuing.

What all of the sources agree about is the extensive cover-up of data and information about COVID-19 orchestrated by the Chinese government.

Asked by Fox News' John Roberts about the reporting, President Trump remarked at Wednesday's coronavirus press briefing, "More and more we're hearing the story...we are doing a very thorough examination of this horrible situation."

Documents detail early efforts by doctors at the lab and early efforts at containment. The Wuhan wet market initially identified as a possible point of origin never sold bats, and the sources tell Fox News that blaming the wet market was an effort by China to deflect blame from the laboratory, along with the country's propaganda efforts targeting the U.S. and Italy.

U.S. Embassy officials warned in January 2018 about inadequate safety at the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab and passed on information about scientists conducting risky research on coronavirus from bats, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Responding to the report, Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Tuesday afternoon: "It should be no surprise to you that we have taken a keen interest in that and we've had a lot of intelligence take a hard look at that. I would just say at this point, it's inconclusive, although the weight of evidence seems to indicate natural, but we don't know for certain."

“Even today, I see them withholding information and I think we need to do more to continue to press them to share,” Secretary of Defense Mark Esper told “America’s Newsroom" on Wednesday, referring to China. Esper added that he wouldn't speak to "intelligence reporting," but that "most people believe it began naturally — it was organic, if you will. I think in due course, once we get through the pandemic we're in right now, there'll be time to look back and really ascertain what happened and make sure we have a better understanding so we can prevent this in the future."

Speaking to "The Story" Wednesday evening, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo remarked: "What we do know is we know that this virus originated in Wuhan, China. We know there is the Wuhan Institute of Virology just a handful of miles away from where the wet market was. There is still lots to learn. You should know that the United States government is working diligently to figure it out."

Concerning the State Department cables warning about the Wuhan laboratory, Pompeo said the installation "contained highly contagious materials — we knew that, we knew that they were working on this program, many countries have programs like this. In countries that are open and transparent, they have the ability to control them and keep them safe, and they allow outside observers in to make sure all the processes and procedures are right. I only wish that that had happened in this place."

On Thursday, China's foreign ministry pushed back on the suspicion that the virus escaped from the facility, by citing statements from the World Health Organization that there is no evidence the coronavirus came from a laboratory.

Americans were originally helping train the Chinese in a program called PREVENT well before the Chinese started working on this virus. The French government helped the Chinese set up the Wuhan lab.

China "100 percent" suppressed data and changed data, the sources tell Fox News. Samples were destroyed, contaminated areas scrubbed, some early reports erased, and academic articles stifled.

STATE DEPT LEAKED CABLES RENEW THEORIES ON ORIGINS OF CORONAVIRUS

There were doctors and journalists who were "disappeared" warning of the spread of the virus and its contagious nature and human to human transmission. China moved quickly to shut down travel domestically from Wuhan to the rest of China, but did not stop international flights from Wuhan.

Additionally, the sources tell Fox News the World Health Organization (WHO) was complicit from the beginning in helping China cover its tracks.

Trump announced at the White House coronavirus news briefing in the Rose Garden on Tuesday that the United States will immediately halt all funding for the WHO, saying it had put "political correctness over lifesaving measures." The United States is the WHO's largest single donor, and the State Department had previously planned to provide the agency $893 million in the current two-year funding period.

Senior administrations separately tell Fox News the rollout of the president’s “blueprint for reopening the U.S. economy” will happen Thursday afternoon, first for governors and then briefed to the press.

Meanwhile, Trump's own handling of the crisis has come into focus. On January 24, for example, Trump tweeted in praise of China’s “transparency" on coronavirus.

Though they were not speaking for the president, the sources ventured an explanation, saying it was diplomatic talk to make the Chinese "feel good". while the investigation was ongoing, with trade and other talks happening simultaneously.

In the six days after top Chinese officials secretly determined they likely were facing a pandemic from a new coronavirus, the city of Wuhan at the epicenter of the disease hosted a mass banquet for tens of thousands of people; millions began traveling through for Lunar New Year celebrations.

TRUMP CUTS ALL WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION FUNDING

President Xi Jinping warned the public on the seventh day, Jan. 20. But by that time, more than 3,000 people had been infected during almost a week of public silence, according to internal documents obtained by The Associated Press and expert estimates based on retrospective infection data.

“This is tremendous,” said Zuo-Feng Zhang, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. “If they took action six days earlier, there would have been much fewer patients and medical facilities would have been sufficient. We might have avoided the collapse of Wuhan’s medical system.”

This is as much true as the headlines of the articles posted on this thread. How about not continually posting unsubstantiated conspiracy theories until there is some proof of the origin of the virus?

All that is known at this time is that the first identified case showed up in Wuhan, China. It is still unkown if that was truly the first case or whether there were previous cases that were passed off as something else.

Why are you posting another article on the same subject only by a different Fox reporter. The first article was not true and this one says the same thing. You can post 100 different articles from different far right reporters and none of them will be true. The Def. Dept tells us the virus was not man made per the Sec. of Defence on TV this morning.

The GOPerLords have sent the memo, and their Bots are doing the Lemming Lindy right over the cliff.

WHY? Because in the US of A, the origin of Covid19 is DONALD j TRUMP!

The GOP despirately wants everyone to FORGET their ToadPOTUS knew about the coming pandemic back in DECEMBER, and their elected GOPers used the information to dump their stocks before the crash they knew was coming because The Toad had made a conscious decision to DO NOTHING and try and ride it out, knowing the financial disaster would come with a lot of dead Americans, but that was worth the POSSIBILITY, however remote, somehow the virus would jsut magically go away in April.

REMEMBER THE TOAD! and the needless DEATH he caused by DOING NOTHING when he KNEW serious action was required.

Wait WHAT?    The US sent scientists to Wuhan in 2018 and they reported safety concerns about the lab....and CURRENT WH REGIME did NOTHING.

The problem appears to be the current WH regime and its fire all the scientists so that any information that highlights a problem, etc goes to an empty desk.

The same is true for all the lies about WHO - which is another of donalds:   It is never me at fault, it was someone else distraction that his lofo followers believe.

You beat me to it afisher. The question that jumps out here is why the Trump administration ignored the warnings even though I think we all know why.

I am just waiting for the Republicans in Congress to propose a national law against eating bats. 'Cause, you know, there isn't any other problem related to the Trump pandemic.

Every day FoxNews/Pravda becomes more and more like The National Enquirer. But the National Enquirer was more credible and better researched.

Origin of Coronavirus

What we know is the virus started in China in late 2019 with one person.  One groups math models say November 16.

There have been theories the virus escaped from a lab in China going way back.

It wouldn't surprise me if China was researching SARS, if fact I'm kind of surprised they didn't develop a vaccine for SARS considering they had an outbreak.

Did the virus pass from bats to humans?  Seems likely, but how did that happen? Who knows.

This story is just another indication that this virus was no surprise to US intelligence and therefore Trump.

If stuff like this was getting back to the President why would Trump dismantle pandemic response, why would Trump take CDC personnel out of China, why wouldn't Trump warn us, the American public.

There are plenty of stories about what we could have done, but it all goes back to Trump and why he didn't do anything to at least try to stop this from happening.

The Trump travel ban to China let 40,000 people through, Americans were in Wuhan China, Americans were on cruise ships, many of then older Americans.

Why didn't Trump at least warn them, why didn't Trump warn us?

You post an article that says at the start these are theories of the virus. That means none of them are proven true. Here is a theory I heard today. Trump started the virus when he was coloring, and adding new hair to his wing he mixed to much orange in  it. Your article ends with a statement from an US Air Force General that he was not worried about any of this in answer to a question by the writer. By the way they have been looking into this story for some time now. Really bad article. All should read it.
