Re: Ocasio-Cortez: No Pay for Congress Next Shutdown

Great idea, but entirely symbolic.

Congresscritters have exempted themselves from INSIDER TRADING Laws, SO whenever they're about to pass legislation that will be a HUGE windfall for a certain industry or company, they buy stock and watch it skyrocket when they announce the new law. Also they have all those 'investigations" going on, which sometimes turn up really lucrative "insider information" about a company, like when they're about to indict the CEO or a Federal regulator is going to rule against the company, then the critters sell the company's stock short and make a bundle when it craters.

Their paychecks are the least significant source of income for most of them, so if you want them to "pay attention" to the People's Business and not their own, remove the exemption that has been making them rich beyond all reason for the last half century.

It is a nice gesture but I just don't see it to be a good idea to put the people in charge of the government purse strings in even a temporary financial bind.

If you want to stop having the government shut down, just don't elect Republicans.

A good point - a one Party system of government would probably not allow for shutdowns, or alternate views, or (eventually) elections.

It’s a nice gesture but most of Congress is independently wealthy. So they really won’t care if they get no salary....

True, and Congress could use the argument "Even we have been affected by the shutdown". And in this case, the president doesn't even take a salary. He donates it.

Like you said, it's a nice gesture, but I think Congress would still prefer that we don't discuss their salaries, or "holding back their salaries".

I remember when Congress would give themselves cost of living raises, yet vote against increasing the minimum wage. It never sounds good.

I wonder how many members of Congress sold their stocks before the shutdown.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.  Not only should the Congress' checks be withheld, the President should not get a dime either until the stalemate is broken and the government is up and running again!  Why should these folks get paid for NOT doing their jobs?

She's already a target for the right to demonize, so now it's a certainty.

Why should the right be any more concerned over this than anyone else - her proposal is non-ideological and non-partisan.

Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez will be entering Congress without having any prior experience at holding public office, but she brings with her enthusiasm.

During the orientation for new members of Congress, a tradition since 1972, Ocasio-Cortez used her Twitter account to report about the influence of corporate interests:

"Lobbyists are here. Goldman Sachs is here. Where's labor? Activists? Frontline community leaders?"

With her lack of experience, along with her enthusiasm, we can expect her to make some mistakes along the way. I think she's going to step on a few toes.

When she takes office on January 3, 2019, at the age of 29, Ocasio-Cortez will also be the youngest woman to serve in Congress in the history of the United States.

What has the Freedom Caucus to do with Congress being paid during shut-downs? - or Trump - or suck-ups - or conspiracy theories?

Sounds like you are mad and just spouting your anger without giving any thought to it.

So did you "give thought" to what Cortez suggests?
