NYC passes grim gun-violence milestone as shootings top 1,000 for the year

NYC passes grim gun-violence milestone as shootings top 1,000 for the year

The city surpassed 1,000 shootings for the year on Sunday, according to NYPD data, which also shows an average of nearly 10 people fell victim to gun violence each day over the last four weeks.

With four more months left in 2020, New York City logged 1,004 shootings as of Aug. 30, according to NYPD data released Monday. Last year, there had been just 537 by that time.

It is the first time the city has eclipsed the benchmark in gun violence since 2015, when 1,138 shootings were recorded for the entire year.

“Mr. Mayor, it is time to stop calling New York the safest big city,” a Brooklyn cop quipped to The Post.

The notable number comes a week before Labor Day, when cops expect another bloody holiday weekend in the Big Apple.

The city has seen 13 straight weeks of surging gun violence — with 375 more shootings and 499 more victims compared to the same time last year.

There were 277 shooting victims logged over the 28 days ending Aug. 30 — meaning on average, nearly 10 people per day were shot, NYPD data shows.

Never confuse Trump Cult members by using FACTS

While hate crimes and murders rise, New York City crime stats hit record lows in 2019

Even amid a troubling rise in murders and hate crimes, the NYPD touted a decrease in overall crime in 2019 during its year-in-review report released Monday. According to the department’s findings, in 2019, overall crime was lower than in 2018, dropping to a new benchmark of approximately 95,000 incidents with 872 fewer victims than in 2018

For approximately 20 years, NYC has experienced dramatically dropping violent crime and homicide rates. Don't listen to Trump Cult members who try to scare you with short term numbers which are meaningless for a number of reasons. Here's just one example from the year 2018.

New York City’s Murder Rate Hit New Low in 2018 Mayor Bill de Blasio says it was the fewest number of homicides in nearly 70 years

New York City set a new standard for safety last year, with its third straight year of falling murders, city officials said on Thursday. The New York Police Department recorded 289 murders in 2018, three fewer than the 292 recorded in 2017. Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was the fewest number of homicides in nearly 70 years. Overall, major crime in the city fell by 1.3% from 97,089 to 95,844, police said. There were 2,245 people murdered in New York City in 1990.

NYC had the lowest crime rate when Rudy Giuliani was mayor.  When they elected a very liberal Democrat mayor, the crime went up.  Read carefully the statistics!

Unfortunately, members of Trump World do NOT understand Crime Analysis, where short term numbers are meaningless. Short term numbers are impacted by weather, the economy, and/or other  variables. The only meaningful crime numbers are LONG TERM ones.

For the past 20 years, NYC has experienced record LOW Crime Numbers. That's especially true for homicides which set records on the low end. Just in case we're dealing with Trump Cult members, 20 years is considered a LONG TERM number.

Unfortunately, Obama cultists believe that short term numbers don't mean anything (for crime stats) for Democrat cities.  For instance, deBlasio is a short term Mayor of NYC and that is the short term that murders and insurrection are on the rise, but to liberals, that means nothing!

It is tragic, Jim.

Here in upstate NY, Syracuse area,  it is increased exponentially.

We have an Independent mayor, and a Republican County Legislator , and a Republican Rep. John Katko who cant seem to do anything about it, either.

Illegal gun ownership is a huge problem in this state, and this nation.

I guess this is the proper response for social injustice ... shoot each other. Demoncrat run cities, with mostly dems voters, shooting each other, with illegal guns... where's the logic in that?

Just an observation.... IT"S NOT WORKING !

There is no proven causal link here.  It could easily be due to the huge increase in gun sales and the sustained stress of living under COVID restrictions.  We all know domestic violence has increased due to close quarters.   Potentially child abuse, too, but that's harder to report/discover when kids are kept at home.

Only time will tell why there have been increases in violence.   Anyone who's publicly saying they know what's causing it is lying.

Democratic free societies function within a small window surrounded on both sides by chaos and anarchy. If people won't or can't be responsible for their lawlessness behaviors, then we (society) empower law enforcement via a social contract. Less law enforcement results in more lawlessness ... even if it's a perception.

I'm not a liar I'm a realist.

Why isn't lawlessness universally happening across the nation? Go figure.

No. Association is not causation.  Police largely stayed inactive during the first days of COVID and crime was down exponentially.  Most crime still is down significantly.   With some flare ups of gun violence in select areas.   Again, it takes a lot more analysis (and time) to understand the whys.

You analysis does nothing facing any real time response. In fact it's how the mayor of Portland is dealing with lawlessness. Paralysis by analysis.

Control the chaos and lawlessness is similar to treating a patients who is facing a life threatening circumstance,  then once under control, treat the patient.
