Good news!

No. Good news would be Trump being able to handle the immigration mess he created by himself. Good news would be Trump not using economic policy as a crutch for his immigration failures.  Good news would be Trump not raising taxes on American consumers......again.

Good news would be a trade deal.......any trade deal....happening under this administration. So far, they are zero for five.

If Trump persists, Mexico can respond too, starting with retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods headed south. Mexico has done so before, during a trucking conflict and in response to steel and aluminum tariffs. It could impose nearly $20 billion in levies from the get go, raising them each month in tandem with U.S. levels.

This retaliation would highlight the gap between Trump’s anti-Mexican rhetoric and the underlying interdependence of the U.S. and Mexico, with stark consequences for 2020. Many of the biggest exporters to Mexico—Arizona, Michigan, Illinois—are already swing states. New tariffs could throw Texas into recession and put its 38 electoral college votes into play. Trade may indeed decide the next election. But if Trump continues down the same path, not in the way he hopes.

MEXICO CITY/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Tuesday said he expects to reach a deal with the United States over immigration before Washington carries out its threat to enact punitive tariffs.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he will impose a tariff on all Mexican goods beginning June 10 if Mexico does not halt a surge in immigrants, mostly from Central America, crossing into the United States from Mexico.

Trump said on Tuesday that he thinks it is more likely the tariffs will be applied and that talks would continue during that time.

Earlier, Lopez Obrador said he was optimistic. "There are signs that it matters to the U.S. officials that there's a deal," he told his regular morning news conference.

Mexico is preparing an immigration proposal to present to U.S. officials at a meeting scheduled for Wednesday in Washington.

"I think the meeting tomorrow will be important and that there will be a deal before June 10, before this tariff comes into effect," Lopez Obrador said.

The humanitarian visas granted to migrants to live and work throughout Mexico have been cut off. The Mexican government  ordered bus operators to stop ferrying migrants across the country. Police forces in several southern Mexican states blocked migrants from entering town centers.

Even citizens have stopped offering plates of food, water and bundles of used clothing, forcing migrants to scrounge for food, often picking mangoes that thrive in the tropical heat.
