Re: L.A. is hemorrhaging bus riders

Problem is Republicans prevent anyone from actually addressing the real problem: Urban Population increases "in 3 dimensions" - we can stack people atop people in high rise apartments. BUT the room for cars will only increase in 2 dimensions - width and length of the highways, and for all intents and purposes, it's only 1 dimension because the roads are only made wider, not longer. So every time you widen a highway to relieve congestion, it promotes growth in the Urban area served by the road at a much faster rate and while a good mass transit system would simply add a bus to the route, the GOPer solution has the new residents all having to buy and maintain a car, which quickly jams the new roads as tightly as the old ones were.

The solution is mass transit, but ever since RockerfellerInc and SloanInc conspired to buy and dismantle LA's excellent light rail and bus systems (their companies were found guilty and fined $40,000 for their crime), Republicans have fought to preserve the car as the only viable means of transportation for Americans.  This puts the bottom 25% at a tremendous economic disadvantage as supporting a car costs obscenely more than buying a Bus pass, diverting the income of the poor away from anything that will enhance their economic future and into the buy-here-pay-here wormhole that will keep them poor forever.

For those unfamiliar with how our Corporate Oligarchs enslaved us to the car, here's a clip from Wikipedia on the subject:

Between 1938 and 1950, National City Lines and its subsidiaries, American City Lines and Pacific City Lines—with investment from GM, Firestone Tire, Standard Oil of California (through a subsidiary), Federal Engineering, Phillips Petroleum, and Mack Trucks—gained control of additional transit systems. Most of the companies involved were convicted in 1949 of conspiracy to monopolize interstate commerce in the sale of buses, fuel, and supplies to NCL subsidiaries.

We are the only industrialized Nation to suffer from this absurd condition because we are the only one with Republicans holding office where they protect Corporate profits at the expense of the public Good.

L.A. is hemorrhaging bus riders

Over the last decade, both Los Angeles County’s sprawling Metro system and smaller lines have hemorrhaged bus riders as passengers have fled for more convenient options — mostly, driving.

Southern Californians are capitalizing on a stronger economy by buying cars in record numbers, experts say. They also point to half a dozen other factors putting pressure on bus systems, including falling immigration rates, rising rents that have pushed low-income families to more remote areas, and a law that allows immigrants in the country illegally to apply for driver’s licenses.

Dropping ridership follows years of complaints about bus routes that are rarely as fast or reliable as driving and often require long waits, multiple transfers and delays in rush-hour traffic. More recently, a surge in the region’s homeless population has sparked concerns about safety and sanitation.

Ridership has fallen on almost all local bus systems, including routes in Santa Monica, the San Gabriel Valley, the Antelope Valley and Orange County, mirroring a national slump in bus ridership.
