Re: Jobless Claims Fall to 49-Year Low for Third Straight Week

One survey shows jobs added, another fewer Americans employed.

How can that be?

There is a weirdness in this month’s employment report.

The numbers getting most of the attention, as they always do, are “jobs added” — 201,000 of them, which seems relatively healthy, if nothing to write home about — and the official unemployment rate: steady at 3.9 percent.
But wait a second. When you actually look closely, you trip over some very puzzling data. According to the numbers, the labor force shrank by half a million people in August. And while the Establishment Survey reported 201,000 jobs added, the Household Survey shows 423,000 fewer Americans “employed.” How can that be?

16 million. That’s how many Americans still say they want a full-time job but can’t find one.

2.9 percent. That’s the year-to-year wage increase that is getting positive attention today.

But, that’s no higher than the year-to-year rise in the Consumer Price index.

Wages are increasing, but at the moment, inflation is eating up all the gains.

In other economic news...

Dow’s 100th Record Close Since Election Day

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high on Thursday, its 100th record close since Election Day 2016.

The stock market index has been propelled higher by economic optimism and tax reform, which have boosted companies' earnings.

Jobless Claims Fall to 49-Year Low for Third Straight Week

I warned the logical challenge I posted would be too complex for a Trump supporter. It appears as if he doesn't even understand the argument.

Jobless Claims Fall to 49-Year Low for Third Straight Week

I realize the use of logic is thoroughly confusing to Trump supporters.

Either the U.S. economy is doing great, as JimC claims, or it's not doing great because China and Canada are hurting the U.S. economy. I'm going to try this again, but I realize the logic is far too complex for Trump Lovers.

Both arguments cannot be true simultaneously. If the U.S. economy is doing great, firing on all cylinders as JimC claims, that means China and Canada are NOT hurting us. Therefore, we don't need to start a counterproductive tariff trade war with them, which could endanger the global economy.

However, if JimC claims our economy is NOT doing great, then one could make an argument for tariffs (even though they never solve the problem).

Which one is it JimC? Is our economy doing great OR is the economy in trouble because of China and Canada?

Note: Unless I missed it, Congress has not passed any trade agreement with Mexico

When the jobs and economic reports come out, our economy is booming and unemployment is at near record lows. Per JimC, the U.S. economy is firing on all cylinders.

But hold on, when it comes to Trump's tariffs, our economy is in big trouble because China/Canada is hurting us, so we have to start a trade war with both countries.

Which is it Jim? It can't be both. Is the economy booming and unemployment down near record lows or is the US suffering because of China and Canada?

The jobless numbers are good!

What does that have to do with the trade negotiations that are currently going on with China?  Mexico is already done and if Canada is smart they will jump in too.

Are these two different subjects confusing?

The Soviets had full employment too.

So it begins.

Nope. We had a weekend thread about Obamas vacation costs, updates on his being a kenyan muslim communist etc. No mention from the same about Trumps transgressions.

So it begins.

For sure, can’t give Obama credit for anything. Just part of trump’s crusade to wipe Barak from any historical references. Racism in action.

Would jimc care to comment on the slow growth of promised wage increases? And compared to increased costs, inflation, and reduction of buying power?

Losing ground maybe?

And are the newly employed getting high paying jobs, or just jobs which may or may include a living wage?
