If that is all that will secure your happiness, you are probably not ever going to be happy. There is so much more to life. At the last family gathering before some of the successful men in my family died, my uncle who was the Dean of Medicine knew he would not be at another gathering made a speech. I remember this part. He said the struggle to put himself through school that created his success was just a part of his life. He said the things that counted most were the people in that room. He cherished his family, his God and those that loved him most. All the rest was just temporary. He died not long after this. The thing he told me that meant so much to me was that he knew I had a tough childhood, but he saw me overcome this and he was proud of my success. My Grandfather was a Republican. I guess it didn't keep the family from success. You see, Scout, we never let the person who was elected President determine our role in life. We followed God's plan for our lives. It has worked out well.

you just attacked scout for his opinion. I understood what he was talking about.

So it begins.

The thread was not about father's in the mall. I accept that you want to fix the world by posting on this site. I also know posting here does not do it. I find this site to be a place for seniors to come and express views that are seen by a small group. In some cases it is for seniors who want and maybe need to vent anger. It is that new word "yeahbutt". Nothing is ever OK with them. If they have to reach back to what my son calls the "Olden Days," then by golly they will stay in that mindset. After all if it happened 20 years ago, we must be punished for it. No one today is allowed to have a good life. We must wallow in guilt for the rest of our days. Sometimes I think the ones promoting this are really promoting themselves. Look at me. I am so pure. See my halo.

Very interesting. You believe our problems can be solved WITHOUT MONEY, and the one we elect as President makes no difference to our lives.

Explains a lot -thanks for the info. @scout.............It amazes me how you can twist something to fit your obsession with money. Explains a lot....thanks for clearing that up. Now, do we need to do the "go fund me"?

I point this out because this board should not be designed for one group of left thinking people to be able to throw up insults without a hint of what they speak.

Comment :

What is going in this country is an attack on observable reality, it should not  be confused with a lack of intelligence or where people live.

People believe what they choose to believe.

What people believe defines who they are, not  race,  faith, or where they were born.

20 Good Character Traits Essential For Happiness

“His conscience was the strongest element of his nature. His affections were tender and warm. His whole nature was simple and sincere – he was pure, and then was himself.”

“Such a nature was admirably constituted to direct an heroic struggle on the part of a people proud enough to prefer a guide to a leader, a man commissioned to execute the popular will but, as in his case, strong enough to enforce his own.”

If you haven't guessed yet, these good traits were written about the character of the sixteenth President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.

President Lincoln was a role model for integrity and honesty. He offers us so many examples of good character traits. These good qualities stayed with Lincoln throughout the trials and tribulations of leading a country during one of the worst periods of its history.

Of course, Lincoln was president during the 19th century when the character of a person was a highly-regarded quality.

What is Good Character?

When a person possesses good character it can be observed through their actions. It's not limited to a single value but the traits are demonstrated in the “good” choices they make and the “bad” choices they avoid.

According to historian Warren Susman in his book Culture as History, the use of the phrase “good character” peaked in the 19th century. “Character was a keyword in the vocabulary of Englishmen and Americans,” says Susman, and so important to society that it was promoted as an essential component of one's identity.

Things began to change in the 20th century, as we transitioned from a producing to a consuming society. Emphasis shifted from a focus on virtue and good character to a focus on self and material possessions.

Says Susman, “The vision of self-sacrifice began to yield to that of self-realization.”

It became more important to cultivate personality traits, influence, and outer perceptions than to develop nobility of heart, mind, and deed. Abraham Lincoln likely would never be elected president today.

Is developing personal character traits an outdated, useless pursuit that has little relevance in modern society?

If you look at many of today's role models as good character examples(the Kardashians, Miley Cyrus, sports celebrities), it would seem so. Who has time for a boring personality type which gets in the way of an egocentric life?

However, it doesn't take much experience to discover how essential good character traits are when it comes to one's self-esteem, relationships, and life satisfaction.

Individual character is the linchpin for a healthy, functioning society. Although it may not be a popular pursuit, developing these important character traits is one of the most satisfying, emotionally intelligent endeavors you'll ever undertake.

Good character consists of defining your values and integrity based on time-tested principles and self-reflection and having the courage to live your life accordingly.

So how do you begin to improve your character?

Let's look at 20 good character traits that impact your happiness.

I invite you to look over this character traits list and pick at least one that you begin working on:

I don't think the denial of man made global warming, the embrace of racism, white supremacy, antisemitism, and misogyny, the contempt for poor people, the takers, the attack on democracy, the accumulation of debt to be paid by heirs, the embrace of lies and disdain for truth.

Indicate good character.

It has become so bad that people have to speak up, even if it's not polite, even if it hurts others feelings.

Because truth and democracy are more important that the feelings of people who have contempt for truth and democracy.

I have to believe Soosie is correct.  It is not who is President or his political party that determines if a person is successful.  But it does depend upon individual initiative.  And that is regardless of a persons gender, race or skin color.  It depends on each person and how much they want to succeed.  My own family came from the mountains of Tennessee where we lived day by day.  But that didn't stop any of us from succeeding in our ambitions.   All of this talk about white males is just a bunch of baloney, again because skin color has nothing to do with ambition where if there is a will, there is a way.  Unless one just wants to wait for everything being given to them which is being encouraged by liberals.

From posts here, I get the idea that liberals want to depend on a communistic system to make them upward mobile.  Too many posts here are attempting to create a racial or gender divide.

Problem is not a lack of white male education.

Problem is a surfeit of white male manipulation.

By allowing people to lie without consequence, the really good liars, like the PsyOps Warriors of the KGB and the shills of the GOPerLords, can get thousands of people to believe outrageous things.

Believing those absurdities causes the believers to act in totally irrational ways, like the pathetic parents who expose their children and the rest of society to disease and death because they falsly believe vaccinations cause autism.

Worse for society are the ones who have been duped into believing Republicans will make things better for anyone who is not already incredibly rich and vote them the power to take all the income and wealth from the middle class and give it to the top of the 1%. If the Republicans are NOT doing this, then WHY is it happening? WHY has the middle class not seen an increase in their real wages for DECADES while the 1% has had a 600% increase in their income?

Incorrect Assessments of White Country Males

Message 30 of 30

Some time back a poster here said that Trump was elected President because country, white males are not educated.  That stuck a bad nerve with me.  My Dad's family consisted of country born white males. My Grandfather owned a large farm.  He made sure his children were educated and praised their success.   In the group we had a President of a major airline, several who owned successful businesses,  a Dean of Medicine at a University, and several prominent Doctors.  To say country male white men are uneducated to me says some jerk has not a clue of what he speaks and does not mind trying to insult those who grew up on farms.    Sounds more to me like the lack of education is in another area.

I point this out because this board should not be designed for one group of left thinking people to be able to throw up insults without a hint of what they speak.  I would like to see posters not only called out for insulting an individual but also a class of people......whites, Christians, etc.  It is as wrong to allow these insults as it is to take a poster down if they say anything about a black or Muslim.
