If Donald Trump wants civility,

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jul/01/donald-trump-civility-political-correctness

If Donald Trump wants civility, why does he trash political correctness?

The ejection of Sarah Huckabee Sanders from a Virginia restaurant, by staff unhappy at her role as Donald Trump’s spokeswoman, has crystallised an American crisis: not quite a civil war but a civility war. According to the Trump administration, an epidemic of bad manners, mockery and profanity has taken over its opponents.

Disparate incidents of opposition to Trump and his regime – including barbs by TV comedians – are being collapsed into a single story: a pouty, entitled and bad-loser left is abandoning civility, and in doing so inciting hatred and violence. Some of this hyperbole about a crisis of manners is cynical political point-scoring. But much of the rest shows a blindness to the fact that the sort of civility being mourned – the kind that meant politicians could go about their business without fear of abuse from the public or the president – broadly did exist before Trump hit the campaign trail and began beating the drum of misogyny, racism and hatred of the press. It was called political correctness, and Trump supporters didn’t like it.

In fact, Trump made opposition to it one of his flagship election policies – no more being nice to people just for the sake of it. During the first debate of the Republican primaries, Fox News host Megyn Kelly asked Trump how he would answer the charge that he was “part of the war on women” (he had called women he didn’t like “fat pigs”, “dogs”, “slobs”, and “disgusting animals”, and had told a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice it would be a “pretty picture to see her on her knees”). “I think the big problem this country has is being politically correct,” Trump answered, to audience applause. “I’ve been challenged by so many people, I don’t frankly have time for total political correctness. And to be honest with you, this country doesn’t have time either.”

And the country, the part of it that voted for him and continues to support him, concurred. It does not have time for a political correctness that prevents men from calling women dogs, from mocking disabled people, from insulting those they disagree with as having a low IQ. The end of civility was what Trump promised, and what his voters had wanted for a long time. Trump’s country has no time for sympathy for families separated from their children, if it stops migrants smeared as rapists, drugs dealers and murderersgetting into the country; it has no time for the victims of school shootings if it means curbing the right to gun ownership; it has no time for a free press if it means having to be presented with facts that counter its claims.

And yet, the response to this promised vandalism of manners, decay of tone and disregard for human life has sent Trump and his supporters into a swoon of offence. A text message sent to Trump voters last week asked for financial support because it was “time for civility”, and time to “show the left we won’t be intimidated”

Donald's definition of civil discourse is anything he can use as a weapon against his enemies.

His definition of incivility is anything his enemies use against him.

I guess Trump really did start all this with the way he called people names in the very beginning , even those in the Government. Now the tables are tuned he and the Rep, just need to have thick skins and live with it as the Dem. have to.
What should happen is for it to stop, but no one can or will stop Trump. He is a foul mouth, womanizer, porn star lover, dirt ball, degrading our wounded military, and esp/John McCain. As long as the President does it, his base feels it's OK.

Sad that our Government as become so LOW as to name calling.

I often wonder as Trump calls people derogatory names about looks, heritage if he thinks of his own looks, his heritage, neither of which are much to brag about if people want to get nasty.
Again, "You get what you give," So Donald it works both ways so I guess, get use to it.

So trump and his supporters now want "civility"...

Ok - shouldn't the model of the kind of "civility" extended to Obama and return it in kind be the model for "civility" extended to trump and his followers and supporters?

We remind the pseudo-christian evangelicals that when the future first lady first nude model posed in photo shoots embracing other nude female models in a manner that deliberately implied female homosexual activity - they hypocritically looked the other way and said absolutely nothing about that...

How about using the following as examples of models for reciprocal civility?

DgqJFUaVMAEqLl1.jpg

 Dgq_W3_Ir_U8_AERjl_G.jpg

Surely trump supporters can handle a return of the same kind of "civility" they dished out...    unless they are bigoted hate filled racist hypocrites unsuccessfully pretending to be decent, honest, honorable people...

And there's not the slightest question - such "reciprocal returns of civility" are - without the slightest shadow of doubt -  Constitutionally Protected First Amendment Free Speech and Symbolic Free Speech...

@alferd...............What is it you want from anyone who did not treat Obama as you think should have happened? Do you plan to live in the past forever? I hope there comes a time that some people who are angry can begin to look forward. Until then, maybe OUR country can only look in the rear view mirror. I find it such a waste of potential success.

Did you "find it such a waste of potential success" when people were posting and displaying all of the garbage about Obama?

Why is it only the Democrats that have to practice 'civility'? We don't have to look into the past to see the lack of 'civility' shown by the current President and his supporters which is either ignored or supported by the same ones who are decrying the lack of 'civility' in political discourse.

"something useful" is to stand up against the actions of this idiot-in-chief. Millions of Americans are doing so and they will show up at the polls in November.

Why then do you only complain when those who don't support Trump protest?

When you start calling out Trump and his supporters for their uncivility, I may get more emphatic that the other side needs civility. Maybe you should put on your big girl pants and clean up your act before expecting others to continue to turn the other cheek.

Which Republican Member of Congress did you here of calling for people to create crowds to harass pols and staffers in gas stations, stores, etc.? Outside which Dem Cabinet Member did mobs gather screaming and yelling annoying the neighbors You guys have antifa to attack people engaged in legal, permitted events or speaking events - where is the counterpart? Which Dem Member had to give up his lease on his office because the daily screaming mobs in the street made commerce impossible for other tenants?

Back in the '80s I ran into Dante Fascell in the Safeway. We exchanged neighborly greetings. I did not follow Water's advise and gather a mob and let him know we didn't want him there.

About 10 years ago I happened to be eating at the same Italian restaurant as Steny Hoyer. Same deal we both nodded and smiled - and enjoyed our dinners.

I am a supporter of the agenda of President Trump. As such you claim I am not civil - any substantiation for that?

To depend on Trump to be civil is a chimera      The man has always been a vulgarian. I don't think  that he can change that.
And yes, the Democrats should display civility. otherwise we descend to his level and that is not the  goals of a winning Party.

So, please don't regret your civility, it s who you are .

1A.) Lies are not OK. B.) Everybody lies. You, me, everyone. The world we live in.

But we are not talking about everyone here, we are talking about Presidents. So ...

2A.) Wait, Presidents are included in everyone. And B.) Every President lies. The world we live in.

Tell your grandchildren that leaders often feel they need to bend the truth while negotiating. Tell them that they often feel that they need to conceal facts while carrying out their duties. And tell them that while this is typical, it in no way makes lying good or even the best of all options. And then tell them that even though most people lie, most of us can learn to spot lies. So not only is lying not typically the best option, it is often widely seen through so the best of us learn to just tell the truth.

And then be sure to tell them to treat everyone with respect regardless of how they treat you. This is what it takes to be a grownup and this is what it takes to be a better person. Be best. 🙂

"Bend the truth?!" No, Trump is a compulsive liar. He lies even when he doesn't have to. He lied about his affairs, he lied about paying off his mistresses, he lied about crowd size, he lied about not having anything to do with his son's reply to his meeting with Russians at Trump Tower, he lied about denying knowing certain shady people, when it's well documented that he not only met with them, he did business with them. He has lied so many times, people don't believe him, if, and when he tells the truth. Not only that, but he puts his staff in a position to lie for him too. He lies to cover up his lies, and then lies to cover up the lies that covered up the lies. He has elevated the indeceny of lying to a new level. And, no, I will not tell my children that it's okay for someone to lie in order to carry out their duties.

I imagine you had a screaming fit when Bill Clinton was caught in an adulterous lie. Right? Lying is wrong. Lying is sinful. Read your bible. Oh, but, yeah, I remember Trump saying that he has never done anything wrong that warrents asking God for forgiveness. (Another lie.)

The democrats don't know how to handle a Republican that knows how to punch back.

Most Republicans in the past have just let the democrats attack and run off at the mouth and ignored their childish behavior.  President Trump is very different.  He has proven he has no use for their childish behavior and he uses the Bully Pulpit to expose their behavior and make them look like the idiots they are.

They attack him for the same thing Obama did and he does not ignore it,  He hits back 10 times harder and the country (the normal thinking citizens) laugh at the ridiculous behavior of the democrats.

I for one think it is refreshing to see our President expose the democrats for who they have really become.  I say good job Mr. President.

It appears President Trump can at times be mean...

It is conclusive, the democrats are childish, hypocritical and at times stupid.  A great example is the democrat congress people that are calling for ICE to be abolished.  Yeah, that's pretty stupid.

I can live with occasionally mean... Have little tolerance for stupid.

If you remember, it was Trump-the-Moron who was calling for civility. Of course, that was after he got his shots in, wasn't it?  Stupid would be getting rid of free trade, trusting North Korea without any agreement at all, and not dealing with the immigration system which is obviously broken.

When you have a president who has trouble reading.................I think stupid is the right word to use.

Really? That's who you want your President to be? Someone who behaves like a five-year-old? Back in the good old days, Presidents didn't behave as if they were on the playground.

I mean, is that you how conduct your business and personal life? By screaming insults, calling people names and putting children in jail while lying to blame someone else? And then when someone politely asks you to, say, leave their restaurant, you tweet with intention to destroy their business, and screech "But civility!!!!" ? Is that how you live your life?

If not, why not, if you think it's a good way to run the country?

It wasn't 321 - it was me. And yes, I like that. A bully attacks people, a wuss turns the other cheek, the ideal is a compromise - not an attacker but a counter-attacker. And that is what we have as President.

Why would anyone say “IF he starts an attack” when there are multiple examples of Trump attacking without any provocation other than someone disagreeing with him? Do you really think that name-calling and encouraging violence against those who disagree with him are proper actions for the President of this country?

When are you going to hold Trump to the same standards that you demand from those who don’t bow down to him?
