In other words, those ready for that world who can read, can communicate, can understand math, can understand science, in other words, that group who want to be able to tend for themselves and their families rather than looking to the government to see to their needs.

Problem is, Conservatives do NOT want to "be able to tend(sic) for themselves and their families".

They want extraordinary Government assistence to arrange their income so it escapes taxation.

They want special Government consideration so they can make all their kids millionaires before they're 21 using tax-free gifts.

They want special country club Government prisons for "white collar criminals" so they won't have to assoicate with the Unwealthy if they get caught.

They want Government to allow them to pass huge fortunes to their spawn tax-free.

Guess What???

THEY GOT ALL THOSE THINGS, but of course those things are NEVER part of the discussion of "things the Government should not do". Oh no, the Conservatice conversation is devoted ENTIRELY to how to REDUCE subsistence support to the least of our citizens and vilify those who are not paid enough to pay federal income tax.

@ManicProgressive - All you said is true, but you missed the most significant lesson the seriously rich all pass to their children:

The Importance of CONNECTIONS,

how to build them and how to maintain them. With the right connections, their children get the unpaid internships in the Corporate HQ because they've already met the selection committee socially AND they can live for a year or two in The Big City without a paycheck, thanks to that Trust Fund begun the day they were born and continued to grow by at least the $20K Mumsie and Poppy kick in each year.

As for the rest - the best schools, tutors, travel, etc. it also pretty much insures they will meet and marry only those like themselves, preserving the Family Hoard the same way Royalty did successfully for all those years before 1776 marked the beginning of the end for that form of Royalty.

You really do have to take a step beyond the theory that people caring for themselves is  not possible for anyone but the wealthy and their offspring. All good paying jobs are not based on connections - but most are based on qualifications. That is where the emphasis should be instead of resentments towards the accomplished.

mickstuder, you nailed it!  The Republican War on Education is not just to disenfranchise teachers who, being well educated and dedicated to the improvement of young lives, trend strongly Progressive. It's to enslave the best and brightest who don't begin with lots of money so the Uberrich will still have the services of the very bright, they will have their lives as servants indentured by their never ending DEBT.

They already enslaved the "Working Class" of High school and technical school grads by making certain those folks will never be able to get adequate health insurance EXCEPT thru allegience to their EMPLOYER and driving the real value of the minimum wage back to HALF of what it was in 1964. What GOPerLords don't want noticed is if the BOTTOM never increases, neither does the middle.

This and the "payday loan" at 400% interest made legal by Republicans keeps the working class unable to save for their future OR to save enough money to be able to tell the boss to "take this job and shove it" which was a near-universal option for workers before 1980 when savings rates were around 10% of income.

True, but it is the "connections" that make it possible for one to come into contact with those handing out the promotions when you begin your career, and nothing succeeds like success. Early promotions produce an "aura" that greatly increases the chance of later promotions. In school, getting that first scholarship makes it MUCH easier to get others, and the same holds true in the workplace.

Do you think that’s a fair advantage over a hard working super bright middle class kid? I don’t. The socialist countries Mick references have a fairer distribution of resources where more can succeed based on their own merit and not their parents’ wealth. 

That is all exactly right.  Even when an extremely bright, not wealthy student demonstrates success in his education, that person is shackled with massive debt that controls all prospects of continuing success as a young adult.  This entirely unfair disadvantage they face seems purposely assured.

This needs to change and I believe eventually it will in the way of a national bail out for the millions of Americans who because their parents were not able to pay their way for them are in the positions of constantly trying to overcome this debt that forces them to live their lives below their potential.  It is a shameful burden inflicted upon our best and brightest while at the same time eliminating the competition the wealthy would need to recognize and contend with.
