Higher Premiums, Deductibles and Co-Pays

Trump has broken all his campaign promises on health care. He told us he wouldn't touch Medicaid. Instead, he's cutting $880 billion from Medicaid (more if the Senate bill is passed) and ending it as an entitlement.

He promised to give us health insurance with lower premiums, lower deductibles and co-pays, and stable markets. After studying the Senate bill, health policy experts think it goes in the opposite direction.

There are three things that will make Trumpcare more expensive for consumers:

1.) The absence of an individual mandate means that there will be no incentive for people to buy insurance before they get sick. If mostly sick people are in a pool, premiums go up.

2) In 2020 states will be able to waive the essential benefits in the ACA. That means insurers could come up with policies with skimpy benefits--no prescription coverage, no doctor's visits, no medical tests, no cancer coverage, etc.--while comprehensive policies would become ever more expensive for those who are sicker or middle-aged. States could also allow insurers to reinstitute annual and lifetime limits on care.

3) The Senate bill ties premium subsidies to the bronze plan, with its higher deductibles and co-pays, rather than the silver plan like the ACA. The bronze plan only requires insurers to pay 58 percent of medical expenses; the silver plan requires 70 percent. To qualify for a subsidy you would have to choose a bronze plan.

I think that was a problem under Obamacare...get sick and then buy Obamacare Insurance.

and..

That could be a good thing...like older women would not need to buy insurance that covers pregnancy. People would have choices ...buy coverage they need that is a good thing.

Kid--What happens when an accident or the inset off a catatrophic illness is sudden? Who pays for that when there is no insuance? You, that's who--the taxpayer-at a very inflated cost as ER costs are 4 to 5 x as expensive as doc visits and planned procedures. Costly and stupid!

Gee, I miss having a real President!!

That's what happened and is happening under Obamacare..buts its not the taxpayer. Even people that have Obamacare can not pay the high deductibles so people that have "good insurance" are paying their bill.

pc - Much worse - the newly uninsurred who shows up in the ER really sick because that's the only way they'd see him will send the bill to everyone who still has insurance, Der Trumper and the GOPers have made sure there will be no "Government Waste" involved in treating the newly disenfranchised under Medicaid or Medicare because Medicaid will be dead and Medicare will be in Hospice after their health care plan becomes law.

The GOP plans are to a) lower the coverage, but substituting the standard offering from the Silver Plan to the Bronze.    b) increase costs of that coverage.     This is from page 48 of the CBO report ( h/t vox).

Rejoice!!!!!!Americans Sonn you will all have, what you voted for. the repeal of Obamacare.
Rejoice on the fact that many of you, will loose insurance coverage to the tune of 18M  as of next year. rejoice and sing hallelujah.   And when that happens. (don;t cry for me Argentina) because I will not feel sorry for you.
You will have what you all deserve. You will have what every American should learn. and that is to   become careful for whom you vote for.
I realize that the last elections didn't provide good choices. but it is in your hands now to think. and see what happens when there is government that is ruled by one Party, no matter which Party that happens to be.
If you really like your Democracy, you need to understand it. respect it. and vote not with your heart but with your brains.

rker--I gave you kudos, but remember that those of us who wouldn't have voted for the idiot if a gun had been pointed at our heads, and the thousands of innocent children and adolescents whose lives will soon be in danger will suffer the consequences of the Repups. disgusting, heartless actions.

No Rker--there is nothing to rejoice about--tears, shame, and anger are much more appropriate.

The Republican Health Care Bill is very bad for most all Americans except the wealthiest. Here is what happens if this bill is passed:

http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/cbo-senate-health-care-bill-would-leave-22-million-more-n77...

Won't surprise me if some here won't even bother to read the contents of this informative link.

ChasKy--Maybe some won't read it because it contains that truth with regard to the heartlessness and cruelty of this bill.  Maybe some don't want to come face to face with the fact that this bill will mean death for thousands.

Remember these Republicans in 2018 & 2020 at our voting booths. Our Senior's and Disabled must stand up together to fight these Cuts from today's right wing Plutocrats. Our Lives depend on it !!!

@cat2015--Cat--The proposed "tax reform" bill will cost lower and middle class people more per year ($4,000-$5,000), while the benefits in said bill are clearly in favor of the rich.  Meanwhile, the rollback in EPA restrictions mean more people will be exposed to toxins, which increase the risk of health problems, including cancers and death.

The proposed "death care bill" will then finish the job the above has started.   Many will have less money due to the tax "reform" bill, and sickened by an ever growing toxic environment.  People will now be shut out of affordable--or any type--of health care. The results are obvious.  Risk pools up, caps on policies, pre-existing conditions back in play, increasing co-pays.

What I find disturbing is that those who support the heinous acts of trump and those who support the disgusting and inhumane bills put forth, seem to not be cognizant of the fact that they too will be negatively impacted by this.  They fail to see that it may be their lives or those of their loved ones that are at risk.

Shaking my head at the short sightedness, the lack of insight, the cruelty, and stupidity of the trump, the Repubs. who support this, and those unable to see the devastating consequences of these bills.

Thank you so much for all of your posts, which serve to educate those who are unable to grasp the reality of the situation, and a reminder to those of us who see what is happening to health care in this country.

RE: Emergency rooms--Any medical facility is only required to give "the minimum of care." They do not have to provide life saving tests or screenings.  This puts patients at risk.  Docs are required to treat, patients are not required to pay.  SURPRISE!  DOCS HAVE FAMILIES, STUDENT LOANS, AND BILLS TOO!  So, and I've said this before--bills not paid, staff cuts occur, docs move to private practice, hospitals and nursing homes close.  Horrible, but realistic scenario.  Rural hospitals, needed by many of all ages for survival, are already struggling and will close if little donnie and company have their way.

THE DEATH TOLL WILL RISE. REPUBLICAN GENOCIDE WILL CONTINUE.

"Some Republican policy experts are not convinced that the bill's provisions would solve those problems (higher premiums, deductibles, co-pays and unstable markets). 'Republicans are taking it and going in the opposite direction,' said Rodney L. Whitlock, a former aide to Senator Chuck Grassley, Republican of Iowa. Mr. Whitlock thinks the (Senate) bill's changes in 2020 to allow insurers to offer plans with less generous coverage could lead to policies with 'almost assuredly five digit deductibles--$10,000 or more.'"

"In Pennsylvania, the state insurance regulator, Teresa D. Miller, warned that insurance rates could be at least 23 percent higher without the individual mandate."

Also, "The absence of any penalty for not having insurance could cause some markets to fall into a death spiral as prices rise and drive out the healthy."

More insurers could decide to leave the markets. "'This is a crisis that has been created by uncertainty and proposed legislation, not a failure of the ACA markets,' Dr. Ondra said.'"

All of which leads to the obvious question: Was this bill ever intended to lower premiums, deductibles and co-pays? Was it intended to stabilize markets?

I think the answer is that it was intended to deliver a near-trillion dollar cut to Medicaid so that Republicans can pass their tax bill through the reconciliation process this year without violating budget rules.

McConnell is a canny operator. He knows the tax cut bill this summer won't pass if it faces a Senate filibuster. He wants to use reconciliation, which only requires 50 votes.

Here's a little nugget I only learned about today. Buried in the Senate bill is a provision that allows ER rooms to turn away patients who can't provide proof of insurance or a credit card with sufficient credit.

We're going to hear more horror stories about ER rooms. The provision requiring hospitals to treat emergencies regardless of ability to pay has been in place since Reagan.

Finally, the Senate bill doesn't just eliminate the individual mandate. It eliminates the employer mandate too. Businesses with over 50 employees will no longer be required to offer either insurance or an employer contribution to an employee's plan purchased on the exchanges.

If businesses shed this expense and see their stock prices go up, watch them resume shedding insurance from their benefits.

As with most things TRUMP, his minions followed him in a Hitlerian manner, and now they will suffer disappointment after disappointment as the German's did in 1944-45. Even Hitler's own Generals turned against him by the end of the war because promise after promise was broken.

As to Trump, talk is cheap and if people were too stupid to vet out his rhetoric, they are now reaping what they sowed. Problem is we are getting reaped too.

Trump had nothing to offer.

He said that the Middle East would be an easy problem to solve; he now has offended both sides over there and is seen as a joke.

He said the Health Care Program, once Obamacare was repealed and replaced, would be the greatest, bestest healthcare. It is going to be a piece of crap.

He besmirched our allies in NATO and you can just see them chuckle as he attends meetings with other heads of state.... and it isn't a haha funny chuckle...... it's a "I'm sorry for the American People" chuckle. You saw it on Abe's face from Japan, France's leader, and Canada's leader.

I hate that America has now become the butt of jokes worldwide but you can't say you didn't see it coming.
