Let's look at this "free" healthcare and "free" education idea - understanding that it really isn't free - it's just that someone else is paying for it. Why do you repeatedly bring up "free health care"? No one here has advocated for that. That's why I use parens. For some" it is "paid for by somebody else".

If the government is paying for your healthcare, and since some life style issues are detrimental to your health - will the government have the power to adjust those life style issue. Why do you keep erroneously repeating "government paying for health care"? People would be paying for health care through a tax based national health care plan. So certain life style issues are detrimental to your health today. I say NO, the government would not have the "power to adjust those life styles"............ no more than insurance companies have that power when we give money to them to pay for our health care. Yes, some would be paying for their care and the care of others.

Education - many students drive up incredible debt on degrees that they are not suited for and there are no jobs for. Will the government determine, based on the individual's abilities and the needs of the economy which courses are taken by which students? Do you think the government should be doing that? Does the government decide what is taught in grade school and high school? Does the government decide what students take certain elective classes in high school today? Of course they don't, so what makes you think it would be any different if college was included? People pay for public education through their taxes.  The things certain individuals bring up in reference to socialism is quite entertaining. Neither of your points (health care and education), and the questions you pose have nothing to do with socialism. If the government is going to offer "free" higher education, does the recipient not have some obligation? Does the government not have the right to expect some positive results from the education it is paying for? I can't see using tax payer money so some slug can live free as a student to get a Masters in "Rare Incan Masonry".

When will conservatives learn that no government provided service is "free".  It is funded indirectly and they just cannot seem to get their heads around that.  They also don't understand that you cannot depend upon government to direct production and investment. That is central planning and it does not work either.

I do so wish conservatives would learn how government works. and is funded.

I have Medicare, and not once has the government called my doctor and told him how to treat me because they won't pay for what he has decided is best. Private insurers do that to him all the time. Now do you want to yak some more about dealing with "government control"?

We are not talking about treatment options.

I wonder why.

Why do Conservatives think that as soon as the government manages something it becomes "free"?

When you say "no one" aren't you leaving out the billions of people in other developed countries who have such a system with lower costs and better outcomes?  How about the millions of Americans who voted for Hillary and Sanders with the understanding they would save the ACA?

Finally, would someone please point me to the link outlining how the party-of-no will provide health care to all our residents?  Perhaps they plan to mail out a $5 off coupon on their first doctor's visit?

If the government is going to pay for healthcare, do you not think they should have some effect on unhealthy activities?

And, if the government is going to provide free education, don't you think they should direct the students towards classes that they are qualified for and to fields where they can repay society for their education by becoming productive members?

Do you really think that all public school students in the 1950s and 1960s were directed to certain classes and fields where they could repay society for their education?

Public schools are still free. The subject is "free" higher education.

Statistics mean nothing where choice is involved because if another country meets your standards - move there.

I believe that was the attitude of many other countries with regard to the United States.  "If America is so much better, move there" was actually used in the past.  Millions of emigrants who had the courage, drive, and intelligence to pick up and relocate. Eventually, the other nations found that they were suffering from a significant drain of "the best people" and they had to adopt the free market and classless approach America uses.  Now you are suggesting America should reverse the process.  Do not adapt, have the people who want to adapt move out.  Yep, a conservative.

Socialism is a term Republicans use as an obscenity to degrade anyone who dares suggest we support the good fo the People over the profits of the Corporation. Been that way for 50 year, was a lie back then, still a lie today, and Republicans need to be called on this every time they hurl their favorite  (since there's no Commies anymore) "obscnity"

Government tell you to change unhealthy habits- You mean exactly like your insurance CORPORATION tells yo to do today?

Education giving people degrees with no job attached - so Republicans will exchange our current system for a huge worker training program to subsidize CORPORATIONS who will no longer have to train their new employees.

What we need are DEMOCRATIC majorities who will work for actual people instead of the legal fiction called a "corporation" that only exists because We The People allow it to.

The beauty of a Democracy is that you can vote for what you believe in. So, go ahead, vote for a Socialist. The majority rules gig, though, will almost certainly out-vote you.

And again, just like people who adore heat can move to Arizona, and people who adore an ocean view can move to the coast, while people who have little use for social services are free to move to the south, you are free to move to any one of those better countries if you like them more than America.

But as for me, the argument that XYZ does this, we should too, is worthless. We are America. We are different. And I say we are the best country on earth.

Pleasant journeys.

So then show us the statistics in health care, average incomes, poverty rates, education, etc, that show us to be "the best country on earth", as you claim. Do you even know the statistics on any of this in other countries (or even in our own)?
