Goya Foods CEO praises Trump, and thousands online say #BoycottGoya

Goya Foods CEO praises Trump, and thousands online say #BoycottGoya “We all truly blessed...to have a leader like President Trump,” he said, and many called for a boycott of Goya’s products, citing Trump’s history of derogatory comments toward Hispanics

NEW YORK (AP) — Goya Foods is facing a swift backlash after its CEO praised President Donald Trump at White House event.

Goya was founded in Manhattan in 1936 by Prudencio Unanue and his wife Carolina, immigrants from Spain. The company calls itself the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States.

Goya CEO Robert Unanue, a grandson of the founders, spoke at a Rose Garden event announcing a “Hispanic Prosperity Initiative” on Thursday.

“We all truly blessed, at the same time, to have a leader like President Trump who is a builder,” Unanue said standing at a podium beside Trump.

Almost immediately, #BoycottGoya, #GoyaFoods and #Goyaway began trending on social-media platforms like Twitter TWTR, -4.46%, with scorn coming seemingly from all directions, including from some notable political names.

Many were angered by the support, citing Trump’s history of derogatory comments and harsh policies toward Hispanics, most notably, the administration’s policy of separating immigrant families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Former presidential candidate Julián Castro was among those to take to Twitter, saying Unanue praised someone who villainizes Goya’s customer base.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York said she would learn to make from scratch some of the Latin cuisine that Goya makes.

Goya did not immediately comment.

According to the Pew Research Center, 13.3% of eligible voters in the U.S. this year are Latino, a record high.

Trump has been working recently to court Latino voters, who could swing the vote in states such as Arizona. On Wednesday, he welcomed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to the White House with lofty language, calling Mexico a cherished partner. Trump’s tone was in stark contrast from when he kicked off his 2016 presidential campaign by referring to some Mexican migrants as “rapists” and railed against those entering the United States illegally.

Goya recently donated thousands of pounds of food to families in the Bronx and Harlem who have been affected by COVID-19. The company also made a donation to a public school in Queens.

The hypocrisy is stunning. Stunning.

  • Conservatives are calling for a boycott of Keurig after the coffee brand cut advertising from Sean Hannity's show.
  • Other high-profile, right-wing protests include burning NFL jerseys, writing "Trump" on Starbucks cups, and cutting up Nordstrom credit cards.
  • Conservative boycotts have become a common occurrence in the Trump era.

Trump has long railed against "political correctness." But he has also tried for years to get people and entities punished or banished for what he considers objectionable words and acts. Trump has explicitly advocated cancellations, boycotts and firings on numerous occasions -- often simply because he doesn't like something his target has said.

CNN holds elected officials and candidates accountable by pointing out what's true and what's not.

Here's a look at our recent fact checks.

Here's the list in chronological order.

August 2015: Trump calls for the firing of the late conservative writer and Fox News commentator Charles Krauthammer, a regular Trump critic.
September 2015: After National Review editor Rich Lowry argued on Fox News that rival Republican candidate Carly Fiorina had "cut off (Trump's) balls with the precision of a surgeon" in a primary debate, Trump says: "Incompetent @RichLowry lost it tonight on @FoxNews. He should not be allowed on TV and the FCC should fine him!" (Lowry responds, "I love how Mr. Anti-PC now wants the FCC to fine me. #pathetic.")
December 2015: Trump calls for the firing of then-CBS News journalist Sopan Deb and NBC/MSNBC journalist Katy Tur over reporting he disputed about how he handled protesters during a rally speech.
February 2016: Trump says people should "boycott all Apple products" until the company stops fighting a government request to break into the cell phone of a deceased California terrorist.
February 2016: Trump says Fox News should fire Republican strategist and commentator Karl Rove for being insufficiently positive about his victory in the Nevada caucuses.
February 2016: Trump calls on the Wall Street Journal to fire its editorial board, which had criticized him, and its pollster, which showed results he didn't like.
March 2016: Trump proposes a boycott of Megyn Kelly's Fox News show, complaining that it is too negative toward him.
September 2016: After the Dallas Morning News and Arizona Republic newspapers endorse Hillary Clinton for president and USA Today declares Trump unfit for the office, Trump says, "The people are really smart in cancelling subscriptions to the Dallas & Arizona papers & now USA Today will lose readers! The people get it!"
September 2017: Trump tweets that NFL players and other athletes who don't stand for the National Anthem should be told, "YOU'RE FIRED." He says in another tweet, "Fire or suspend!" And at a rally, he says, "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say, 'Get that son of a **bleep** off the field right now, out, he's fired, he's fired.' "
October 2017: Suggesting he could use the power of the state against media entities he dislikes, Trump muses about challenging the broadcast licenses of NBC and other networks over their news coverage. (He again broached the subject of reviewing NBC's license in September 2018.)
November 2017: Trump calls for a boycott of CNN.
August 2018: Trump tweets, "Many @HarleyDavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves overseas. Great! Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors."
June 2019: Trump suggests people stop "using or subscribing" to AT&T to pressure the company to make changes at CNN, which it owns.
September 2019: Trump suggests that actress Debra Messing should be fired for calling on a news outlet to publish the names of people attending a Trump fundraiser and for a tweet promoting a church sign that said "a black vote for Trump is mental illness." (Messing had apologized for the tweet about the church sign.)
January 2020: Trump says The New York Times should fire columnist Paul Krugman, a winner of the Nobel Prize in economics, for having incorrectly predicted a global recession after Trump's victory in 2016.
May 2020: The day after Twitter appended a fact check link to dishonest Trump claims about mail-in voting, Trump threatens to shut down social media companies: "Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen."
May 2020: Trump seeks the firing of Chuck Todd, host of NBC's "Meet the Press," for the show playing a misleadingly shortened clip of comments by Attorney General William Barr. (Todd apologized, saying it was an inadvertent mistake.) Again broaching the power of the state, Trump tags the accounts of the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates television, and its chairman, Ajit Pai.

Only if....the price is right.  That's what gets promoted from the WH.  Diapers, not far fetched.  Otherwise, the following is always available.

Explore the official retail experience of The Trump Organization in-store at Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York City and online at TrumpStore.com.

They'll never catch up to Mary's book sales though.

Now when I look at Goya foods I see Trump,  and I lose my appetite.

Goya CEO Defies Mob, Declares 'Hell No! Hell No!' I Won't Apologize for Pro-Trump Comments

By Elise Ehrhard

In recent years, leftist cancel culture has forced victims out of jobs and businesses for expressing conservative beliefs or support for President Donald Trump. Leftists have tried to destroy careers and livelihoods.

Some men and women have buckled under the pressure and apologized for conservative views shared by millions of Americans. A college football coach even apologized for wearing a T-shirt with a conservative news network’s logo while he was on a fishing trip.

Robert Unanue, the CEO of Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States, has refused to be a person who backs down for supporting the president.

On Thursday, Unanue appeared with Trump at the White House and praised the administration for its Hispanic Prosperity Initiative.

“We’re all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President Trump, who is a builder,” Unanue said at the event.

“We have an incredible builder. And we pray,” he added. “We pray for our leadership, our president, and we pray for our country — that we will continue to prosper and to grow.”

Soon, left-wingers from Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda (who himself is facing radical leftist backlash for creating a musical that is positive about the Founding Fathers) called for a boycott of Goya products.

The leftists tried to pressure Unanue with the social media boycott hashtag #goyaway and #BoycottGoya.

On Friday, Unanue appeared on “Fox & Friends” and described calls to boycott Goya products as “suppression of speech.” In that interview, he noted that during the Obama administration, he participated in events for President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama with no such backlash.

But it was on Friday evening during an interview with Laura Ingraham on “The Ingraham Angle” that he used his bluntest words about calls to apologize for praising Trump.

“The Goya brand is extremely iconic and it means something to every different ethnicity,” Unanue said during the interview. “That is very powerful. And that can’t be taken down, I don’t believe, in a moment.

“But the fact of the matter is, our country is very divided. I’m 66 years old, and I have been through a few decades, let’s say. And in my lifetime, I have never seen the country more unfortunately divided. I like the saying, ‘There are those who are born to love and build and others to hate and destroy.’ And unfortunately, there’s a movement of hatred and destruction.

RELATED: Goya Boycott Backfires as Conservatives Flock To Support the Hispanic Company

“Who wants to see houses of worship burn? Businesses that people have put their whole life savings into. And to build a business and to only have people come along and destroy it. They have no right to do that. And we have to stand for prosperity. You know, we are the most prosperous country in the world.”

When Ingraham asked if he would be apologizing for standing next to President Trump, Unanue replied “Hell, no. Hell, no.”

Unanue’s spine of steel is paying off for the company.

In response to the boycott, radio host Mike Opelka came up with a Buy-cott encouraging Americans to purchase Goya products.

Pro-Goya consumers have responded. For example, a Virginia man raised more than $100,000 to purchase Goya products and donate them to food pantries, according to MSN.  Turning a boycott into a buy-cott with the president of the United States tweeting a love for your products is the best free marketing Unanue could have asked for.

The company itself has donated millions of pounds of food to the U.S. food banks, including 100,000 pounds to the New York City food bank. New Yorkers like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should be showing gratitude to the company, not hostility.

Too few leaders, whether in business, sports or Hollywood have shown the same guts as Goya’s CEO. Rare exceptions have included pro-Trump NFL coach Jack Del Rio who literally told his cancel culture critics to “Kiss my a**.”

Americans of any political persuasion need to feel free to peacefully voice their opinions without having their lives or livelihoods threatened. Watching celebrities and prominent leaders bow down to the mob again and again has had a chilling effect on political and cultural discourse in this country.

So three cheers for Robert Unanue. He stood by his principles and ought to be rewarded for it. It is gratifying to see somebody who’s not afraid to take a stand.

MEMO TO LIBERAL LEFT:

Please keep doing what you are doing.

Your actions are galvanizing conservatives all over the world, not just in the USA.  A choice must be made and for America it will be November of this year.

ToadPOTUS never has any citizen to the White House who is not a sycophantic, toad-kissing wuss. Problem for Goya is their major market gives Toad a 31% approval rating, and 59% say they'll vote for Biden.

For the sake of the company and its workers, I hope those customers stop buying for a couple weeks, and then forgive the CEO who had no choice if he ever wanted to visit the White House before 22 Jan 2021, and tRump had said he would launch a Hispanic prosperity initiative, which has yet to see the light of day.

@Roxanna35   That seems a very strange comment in these crazy times when almost every comment is considered racist...well, by the white population anyway.

Guess what, even "we Americans" buy and consume many different cultures foods.  When i read your comment i was like, wow...if that isn't racist thinking...what the heck is.

This is a much better response...  I love it!  "Buycott"...  LOL!!

Many took to social media to express their displeasure with Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue after he praised President Trump at a White House event on Thursday, but others are flipping the narrative and calling for a Goya Foods "buy-cott."

Opelka's post received 27,000 likes.
