Sheesh.

No kidding!

“There’s about one ton of steel in a car,” Ross said on CNN. “The price of a ton of steel is $700 or so, so 25 percent on that would be one half of 1 percent price increase on the typical $35,000 car. So it’s no big deal.”

In his estimate, that would amount to a roughly $175 price increase on a car.

You need to understand how business works. The increase in the price of steel is one factor and GM warned Trump about tariffs being used. He used them and they are closing 3 plants in the US that is fact. You do know GM has a big operation in China. Buick is one of the most popular cars there. Once again the enablers prove the experts correct.

Buick is made in China because no one wants a Buick here (maybe liberals do). Remember Olds-mo-bile dinosaur? Now Chevy Impala is dead because no one wants them. Once again, liberals know nothing.

Your answer makes no sense. You do not even understand the first thing about the auto business. Buick sold in he US are made in the US, Mexico, Canada just like other GM cars. Buick assembled in China have parts made in this country just like all other cars. Buick was the most popular car in China for years and may still be today. That made GM a lot of money which came home here. The experts tell us the far right enablers are uneducated, mostly rural, mostly white, mostly poor, easy to lead etc.

YOUR EXPERTS are always wrong. Stop listening to CNN and MSNBC where you get all that useless BAD information.

Your answer proves me correct as once again the enablers prove again the experts correct in what they tell us makes up the group.

And Trump needs to learn how to read so the history of protectionism and its impacts can become clear to him.  Any thoughts on Ford's $1B loss after Trump's trade war? How about soybean farmers?   I am thinking there is one common denominator to these economic events.

Olderscout66,

Thank you for your clear and outline post. I am sure that everyone will be able to understand it. Oh please I don't want to go back to the junior Bush years.

Der Trumper is, was and ever will be a total nincompoop. He has NO CLUE how foreign trade works, let alone how to improve it.

First, the twit thinks a Trade Deficit means we OWE money - he's stated this illusion many times.

Second, he thinks a Trade Deficit means we're producing less than we should be when in reality our total production of goods and services (GDP) has DOUBLED since 1993.

Third, he thinks a Trade Deficit weakens the US DOLLAR, when in fact the strength of the dollar is what makes running a deficit possible.

Part of the problem is because Der Trumper gave Jared the job of finding him a "Trade Guy", and Jared did his job search using Google and hired Peter Navarro after scanning reviews of a couple of Navarro's books, and seeing they aligned with Trumps misapprehensions and misconceptions making Navarro a perfect pre-programmed stooge who would always tell lil donny HE WAS RIGHT.

For GOPers who refuse to understand anything about Economics beyond their need to cheer whenever soemone give a taxscam to the Uberrich, here's a short course in International Trade Balances.

When, at the end of the year, you discover you have IMPORTED more goods and services than you EXPORTED, you have a TRADE DEFICIT.

Once upon a time, this could result in the SURPLUS country delivering their excess dollars to the US Treasury and demanding they be converted into Gold, which resulted in stacks of ingots being moved out of one little room in the sub-basement of the Federal Reserve of New York labeled 'USA" and deposited in alnother little room with the label of the surplus nation - France under DeGaulle was the ONLY country who would consistantly do this, and no one outside the finance community ever noticed it was happening.

Today we don't redeem dollars for gold, so the surplus nation simply takes their excess dollars and uses them as a "RESERVE CURRENCY" to support their own national currency - yes, the dollar IS that strong. OR they take the dollars and use them to finance their own government programs.

Selling huge quantities of dollars on the open market WOULD cause the value of the dollar to decline - simple supply and demand - but that would mean a reduction in the value of the selling Nation's own currency reserves, and a drop in the value of their currency. Nobody but Trump is dumb enough to consider such a self-destructive move an even remote possibility.

The simple fact is the trade deficit, which Der Trumper has repeatedly OVERstated as "$800BILLION EACH YEAR" (it's actually a quarter-trillion less, around $540B) means Americans have $540Billion worth of somebody elses goods and services and THEY have $540B in fine etchings of dead Americans, which they are HAPPY to have because SO FAR those "dead Americans" can be converted into goods and services at a reliable rate anywhere on the planet.

But if we continue to allow Republicans to manage our economy, that joy of ownership will evaporate and THEN we will have a problem because people will demand MORE of those dead Americans for their products and we will be into a major inflationary spiral that could collapse the economy.

The solution is to remove the moronic GOPers from elected and appointed office and make sure their stupidity does not cause ANOTHER jrbush Depression.

But did you notice their sales are UP?

Overall, though, GM sales are down....
