Think about how much plastic we bring home from the grocery store, alone. Salads and produce, frozen food, products in plastic jars and bottles, and the big one - water. Add to that, plastic storage bags and containers, plastic garbage bags. It's an endless list.

The articles are real eye openers. A lot of "recycled" plastic is actually ending up in landfills or incinerators, or being swept out into the ocean. The pictures in the stories are mind boggling and disturbing.

thank you, Mavolta, for that useful reference to the Guardian and its excellent series on plastics.  We need to know this information, to understand not only what we can do individually, but also why it is that  we have to deal with so much plastic in the first place....oil based, cheap to produce, convenient. Get informed, demand better products, change the system!

The Guardian recently published a series of articles titled United States of Plastic. We are the biggest polluter in the world when it comes to plastic. Some countries have had enough. China no longer takes our plastic, and the Phillipines is also starting to turn away plastic. Other countries being overwhelmed by the world's garbage may join in. There are serious health problems occuring there.

One reason we cannot get any action to reduce single use plastics, and those awful plastic bags is tied to the powerful lobbying of the oil and chemical industries who make the plastics in the first place. The making of plastics is also source of pollution.

Bottom line: We need to deal with the problem ourselves, and do everything we can to help environmental groups to fight the oil lobby.

Here is a link to the series, and some great investigative journalism.

All these individual actions are good.  But I feel we must do more to change the system that has produced this dismal situation.  We must have hope, gather up the energy needed to change the system!  The Elders Climate Action group is a gathering of us grandparents concerned about the future of our beautiful grandchildren, to bring pressure for change, hopefully in time to avoid the worst consequences of our past irresponsible, thoughtless actions.  Go to EldersClimateAction.org and learn what they are doing...they have a once a month webinar discussion/group about actions taken that is always interesting and inspiring.  We Must join energies and create a better world!

GLOBAL WEIRDING, CLIMATE DISRUPTION

Lots of electric cars hitting the market in 2020

A few I like

https://www.cnn.com/videos/cnnmoney/2017/08/31/volkswagen-buzz-bus.cnnmoney

https://bollingermotors.com/

GM is pondering an electric Hummer, if you can afford it, think I'm in the VW buss league.

Use LED lights everywhere.

Improve your home insulation.

Upgrage appliances, particulary heating system, new systems are 40% more efficent or more.

Mulch and compost, work that into the ground, improve soils and conserve water.

Plant trees in your mulch pocket. Each tree offsets 40 lbs of carbon per year, plant as many as you can.

Can't plant trees, contribute to those that can, Goggle plant trees to offset carbon and pick one.

Use clean energy suppliers

https://cleanchoiceenergy.com/

Conserve and be an energy miser, plant trees to offset carbon, conserve water.

Our poltical system in the USA is corrupt and owned by special intrests, don't look to the government for help,. think about it, read about it, do what ever you can to reduce your carbon footprint.

Donny bonespurs, in total disregard to centuries of diplomatic protocol, revealed the substance of his private discussion with Prince Charles.

What is more disgusting than his lack of couth is his amazement that Prince Charles should be worried about the future of his children and grandchildren if we allow the continued use of fossil fuel to destroy our environment.

lil donny cannot understand how someone as rich as the Prince would be concerned about his children's future, which speaks volumes about the reason donny ignores science and reality to push for more burning of coal. He, like the GOPerLords, is certain his wealth will shield HIS kids from the disaster HIS policies are bringing to the rest of the human race.

@SylviaD812355, we have a WH admin, the president, who is in total denial of his OWN administration's report on climate change!  Got his phone #?

You want to hear some more 'good news' (*said facetiously*)?

KARIUZAWA, Japan — Environment ministers from the Group of 20 on Sunday recognized an urgent need to tackle the marine plastic litter that’s choking the world’s oceans, but failed to agree on concrete measures or targets to phase out single-use plastics.

More than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans every year, equivalent to a garbage truck’s worth every minute, and by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans by weight than fish, scientists predict.

But agreeing on a common approach to the problem has proved problematic, with the United States blocking demands to set a global target to significantly reduce or phase out single-use plastics.

Trump wants to blame other countries.  "Hey!  We got clean water.  We got clean air!  America first!"

But environmentalists say the Trump administration’s argument ignores the fact that the United States has long been the world’s biggest exporter of plastic waste to poorer countries, which has brought dire environmental consequences.

It also glosses over the role of U.S. corporations in selling plastics and products packed in non-recyclable plastic to developing countries, often in small, single-use sachets.

Source: Washington Post

Every country, EVERYONE, including the USA is culpable in combating human-induced climate change and trashing the environment.  I can't understand why the GREATEST country in the world has to nitpick that this country or that country has more waste or isn't doing their fair share.  WHO CARES?!  The GREATEST country in the world can lead the way, set the example, and we have a pouty brat telling us he doesn't 'want to play' and would hamstring any collaborative American effort in fighting this global crisis.   #1 priority when addressing the accelerated climate change is VOTE THE MORON OUT!

Trump has signed zero deals. Remember, this is the man who lost a $1 Billion over ten years and had the reputation of folding to whomever he was negotiating against.  He was going to do better on the Iran deal too. He was going to do better on NAFTA too. He was never going to take a vacation too.  Failure is in his blood.

And please don't tell me what he is "trying" to do. Nobody would have voted for him had he said "I will TRY to.....". I am sick of that snowflake trying to do things.

Attention must be paid to what is happening all over the world!   Bill McKibben's latest book, Falter, lists, in great detail, what we have to acknowledge, that life on this planet is threatened, caused by dominant humans' irresponsible choices - unlimited extraction of limited resources and the exploitation of other peoples., as well as unchecked population growth.

Many  AARP individuals have indicated examples of their personal choices for more sustainability and responsibility, all good.  But in addition, we must spread the word.  Contact your representatives, local, state and national.  Congressional switchboard is 202 224 3121.  Get familiar with the process by which decisions are made that affect our lives, and those of our grandchildren. Demand a Better Future for them!

Join groups like the Sierra Club, 350.org, and the Climate Mobilization, which are working every day to create a better world.  GreenAmerica.org is a wonderful group, offering information on everything from green investing to more responsible personal choices.   Use Google and Yutube for more information.  Talk to your neighbors!
