Welcome, Ed. It's nice to have a retired teacher here.

I was taught the same as you, but found in later years that being silent is being complicit. I have signed many on-line and local petitions for causes that I felt needed to be addressed. Many voices together are more likely to be heard. I also tend to write more frequently to my local, state, and federal representatives on topics that I find most urgently need to be addressed. I also contribute what I can (small donations add up) to non-profits that work for legislation that I support, especially on environmental issues. It's the only way we have of forming a lobby to oppose those of corporate interests.

As for the political board, the discussions here are usually about tribal politics. But, there are also good articles posted by people coming from different backgrounds and professions who add their expertise to the subject matter which can be very interesting.

For a breath of fresh air, you may want to look over some of the other boards. They have some good conversations as well, and not so contentious as this one.

Good morning to all-

I'm an AARP memeber and a retired public school teacher.  I am presently an outdoor writer for several publications.

I spent my adult life trying to help kids learn skills which might make a difference in their lives. Sometimes, it worked. I have kids from truly desperate home situations and backgrounds who became positive and contributing meembers of society. Taxpayers, even.

It hurts me to daily see the low level our national politics have sunk to, and I find it very difficult to follow my childhood instructions- "If you can't say anything good about someone, don't say anything at all." I make a point in my personal life to follow this advice.

But with the vileness of the people in positions of power in D.C. and even state government, I can't remain silent. The present occupant of the White House and his republican supporters MUST be met with resistance, and their efforts to make horrible and harmful laws the rule of our land must be stopped. I do not wish to offend anyone, but the way I see it, the present republican poiticians on all levels are some of the most vile, destructive, harmful, and donwright mean people who have ever come to power.

Those of us who see the world through different eyes than these vile politicans must keep up a steady and non-stop verbal oppostion to their efforts.

Vote the garbage out in 2020- it can be done.

good day to all- Ed

It's not good social etiquette to talk politics or religion in public, but now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their country, and this is politics and current events forum, so what to do?

We can't, or at least should not physically attack each other, but we can't be silent either.

We must resist, in a non violent  way.

The way we can do that is with words.

However more important then words, is the vote.

Democracy in the USA is under attack, we alll must exercise our right to vote while we still have it.

Welcome to the Political Board, Ed.

From what you wrote, I'm sure you'll fit in well.  I, too, am disgusted with what a low level politicians (and their backers) have sunk to.  The Democratic party died long ago and the Liberal party replaced it....next it might be the Socialist party

I think it's sad that they have no respect for the Office of the President, and that is what has deminished our national respect for some politicians and their hate-filled supporters.

This is 'supposed' to be a board where we share opinions and back them up with verifiable factual links to prove our points; but it doesn't happen here much, unfortunately.

Just remember that we all have our own opinion and our own 'truth' we try to speak.  it's sad that as we grow into 'adults' so many forget what they learned as children, or disregard their own words they used to 'try' to live by.

If resistance continues to meet resistance our American country will get no where and sink even lower.

You say that and then go into a rant.

I hope when you were a teacher you did not try to inflect your political beliefs in to the young minds of your students.

Welcome to this board.

Would you say this New Member appears to be one of those Radical Socialists Trump Was Talking About Last Night?

There you go, and they're off.....always wanting to start something when someone has a different opinion than an Alt Left Liberal.

A Kindergarten class was taught to "Be kind or Be quiet".  That might work for some who are much older.

welcome, your  comments are a breath of fresh air, that we sometimes loose, because of the anger and the disappointment that exist stoday in our nation.

The majority of Americans, including me, have lost the notion  of keeping quiet when we cannot say anything nice about anyone. That is sad

Personally I wish that we could go back  to the gentility that seemed to exist in the nation bu I guess that in todays culture, that is being out of touch.

Welcome and don't be detered by the roughness that sometimes our posts seem to  have. simply don't pay attention to them.

welcome again

Welcome to this board.

If they had we would not have Dictator Trump. When one has to deal with a far right Dictator everything we are used to goes out the window as you fight for the survival of the Country and decent people living in it. Once the Dictator is gone you can return to normal. Just look at Germany. After the world got rid of Hitler in Germany it returned to normal and today is one of the leading countries in the world. Lets hope here in the USA the people of the USA can do it in 2020.

My wish for you - is a Good Sense of Humor - Thick Skin & the ability to understand this Forum will be a complete waste of your time

Few on this Forum can seperate their Tribal Lust from Reality & Facts

Also - Welcome & the Best of Luck

Remember - it's all - only a Movie or perhaps a Rock Concert facsimile

Trump is currently the Equivalent of a Combination of Clint Eastwood & Ozzie Osborne to too many Americans

Both were only average in their Professions - but they had a Cult Like Following willing to drink poison if asked

Unfortunately the other side also has Cult Like Worship for Lifetime Career Politicians like Pelosi & Schumer who when compared to others in their Profession are not even Average

American Patriotism & those who practice it are under threat of Extinction  by both sides
