Would this have happened if the pick up was not from a publically-owned and ran facility?

Would this have happened if the organization was more non-partisan in their efforts?

Would this have happened if a Church Bus came to pick them up and they were most likely to vote Republican?

I think not.

Might be something to explore

I truly don't understand how even republicans can think this was not an attempt at voter tampering.  I believe these citizens were "ordered" off the bus because there was a fear that those black folks would be casting Democratic votes and in Georgia, in particular, we know there is an on-going effort to surpress the vote being leveled by the republicans.  So let's stop "pretending" like this is not going on.  It is out in the open for all to see--all that CARE to see it!  And it must be stopped because it is wrong!!!!

Statement from County officials -

Jefferson County operates a Senior Center that provides meals and entertainment to senior citizens in Jefferson County three days per week. The Jefferson County Board of Commissioners has a long standing practice of not allowing political activities during normal business hours or at County sponsored activities. These senior citizens are under the complete care and supervision of Jefferson County while they are at the Senior Center. Jefferson County Administration felt uncomfortable with allowing Senior Center patrons to leave the facility in a bus with an unknown third party. Additionally, the event in question that took place at the Jefferson County Senior Center was led by the President of the Jefferson County Democratic Party and as such was considered a political event. No seniors at the Jefferson County Senior Center were denied their right to vote. In fact, Senior Center staff routinely arrange Jefferson County Public Transit to transport senior citizens to vote

I am pretty sure this would have been the case in my county too - it is a minority ran county for the most part - we just try to keep political partisanship away from publically owned facilities since they are paid for by all citizens of the locality.

Don't see this as a race issue - see it more as a partisan issue.

The organization, Black Votes Matter, should have just picked a pick up location that was not publically owned and operated.

Let's leave politics out of our community places where the sense of community needs to be paramount and not divided by any other factors.

Just IMO.

There was no politics involved in this. Every American is supposed to vote and these people were being provided a ride to do this. Only in far right Reb. eyes is this politics. It seems we see this all the time in GA, and as usual it involves blacks. There are a number of law suits now in GA over what the far right Reb. are doing to keep people from voting. What is really sad is to see people in GA try and defend it. It seem rural GA is still living in the civil war period. Did you see the Sec. of State on TV today. If not go watch him. He deserves not one vote, and we will see in a few weeks if what he and others say really reflect how all the people of GA think. I hope and pray not. I was in GA the night Jimmy Carter was elected President and saw how happy the people were. How far the state has fallen since then. In the past few years we have seen the Gov. tell us the way to solve the health care problem is let them die in the streets. We have seen  the Sec. of HHS be so bad even Trump fired him. The Lt. Gov. wanted to raise taxes on Delta Airlines after they cancelled a discount program with the NRA. That would have cost the state 34,000 jobs. Looks like the far right owns GA and in rural GA we see a return to slavery. Make sure you vote so your state does not become like GA which would fit well in Saudi Arabia the way it is being run by the far right Reb.

Gail - Senior Center staff routinely arrange Jefferson County Public Transit to transport senior citizens to vote.

Do they vet the drivers of those county buses first, to determine their "politics"?  What a dishonest, disgusting slippery slope this debacle of intimidation is.  It is the County's shameful "political activity" at work here and not any action of the senior citizens.

Question Gail.  If that county bus transporting people from the Sr. Center to vote elsewhere had an accident on the way and folks were injured, would the Sr. Center be the responsible?

The Jefferson County Board of Commissioners has a long standing practice of not allowing political activities during normal business hours or at County sponsored activities.

Voting is said to be a right, a privilege, a responsibility or a civic moral duty.  Lastly, it is ONE action by one individual making a political choice, that choice would obviously not be happening in voting booths set up on the Senior Center's property.

These senior citizens are under the complete care and supervision of Jefferson County while they are at the Senior Center.

These senior citizens are free to come and go AT WILL.  Once they walk out the center's door, they are responsible for their own "care and supervision".

The only activity that prompted yanking the transportation was a group of people who gathered in one facility while waiting for their ride out and away.

Next time, per the center's "supervision" they shouldnt let it be known who they are waiting for, where they are going, or why, and instead just pretend they're all going to a movie?  It is not anyone's business where that ride takes them or who is doing the driving.  Not yours, not mine and certainly not any county employee.

Let's leave politics out of our community places where the sense of community needs to be paramount and not divided by any other factors.

Are you lobbying to end Town Halls across the nation?

The sixties may be over, but the mentality and the hatred still permeate this nation's core.  If it were not so, why do so many hate groups still exist?  And even now we are having to deal with many of the same issues this nation faced back in the 60s.  So until we get a handle on these issues, we must continue to strive forward to a more fair and humane society for all Americans and not a select few.

Yes, it may be a Right! But the Republican obstructionist mob has made it their mission to repress the vote wherever they can all over this nation. It is an atrocity!

========================================================

One way the Democrats can win is use scare tactics like you fell for....they also, for years are the lies that the Republicans are going to do away with SS and Medicare.

Scare tactics work when used on the uninformed voters. Just saying.

And Republicans use the scare tactics that minorities and Hispanics in particular are going to overrun the nation and all vote Democratic so you all want to keep them out along with suppressing black folks from even being able to vote.  Then they rant and rave that somebody's going to take their guns from them.  So they "fear" that!   And the truth about their stance on being anti-abortion is just the fact that they're afraid if white women keep aborting their babies, the white population won't be able to keep up with the influx of the "others" and they will be outnumbered.  Fear again! The republican party campaigns using tactics of fearmongering.  That's the republican way!

Well, that we don't know. But we do know for a fact that these poor American seniors were deprived of being able to vote at "that" time and who's to say that they may be able to go later or even cast an absentee ballot later.

This is voter suppression pure and simple.  No matter how many reasons or excuses Republicans make 4 all the hurdles and Hoops people are having to jump through to vote, it is wrong and it is the only way they're really wetting their elections. Republicans win their elections when people are not allowed to vote. And they seem to feel no guilt or shame in what they do. It is wrong it is reprehensible and it is the Republican way.
