Does AARP represent the Democratic Party or Seniors?

I just read how the Democrats have scored a big success as AARP is endorsing the Health Care Bill. If this is true, then this is the final straw for me. I am going to cancel my membership from this organization that is nothing but an extension of the Democratic Party. The Health Care Bill is one more step toward the Socialist state that the Obama administration and Democrats seem determined to implement. This is another $1.2 Trillion added to the debt. Part of the payment of this debt is to come out of Medicare that will of course effect all of us. The debt and higher taxes will then fall on our children, grandchildren and great grand children to service the debt. The annual cost of living increase on SS has been canceled by the Democrats. Where is the uproar from the AARP. You see the leadership of the AARP are big contributors to the Democratic Party and to Obama. The AARP obviously does not represent the interest of Seniors and puts their political affiliation with the Democrats infront of our interest. It does not matter if you are Republican, Democrat, liberal or conservative as we are all going to suffer equally while the AARP does nothing to represent us.

AARP represents their own agenda. ... and that agenda is medical insurance. They started off well and fell into the trap of greed and power. Now... Mainly funded by insurance kick backs which far exceed membership dues.

AARP and United Health Care are in bed together. Does it benefit seniors? maybe. Would more healthcare competition help seniors? absolutely. Does AARP do some good things? yes they do.

AARP is rivaled only by the NRA as a lobbying group.

Again, just like the NRA and, shockingly, just like the GOP!!!  Now... Mainly funded by insurance kick backs which far exceed membership dues. Just like the NRA's REAL kickbacks from gun manufacturers and bribing elected government officials.

Of course it does, does the NRA?  Hardly!  Does the GOP!  You decide.  Would more healthcare competition help seniors? LOL. absolutely. Does AARP do some good things? yes they do.  Indeed it does.  Does the NRA?  Other then teach gun safety, endorsing and defending the ability of anyone to acquire and posses a weapon, NO!  It is lunacy!  Are you served by not requiring universal background checks?  The ability to own and posses a plastic gun?  Own hallow-point bullets?  PUH-LEASE!!!

As a regular worker in Washington DC I was dismayed at what I personally found out. AARP definitely supports the democrats and agendas in many direct and indirect ways. I was really sad as I was ready to join because of all the very helpful programs AARP has. I and others have chosen to find other avenues for help. Please AARP, start showing political support unilaterally to be fair to all and not prejudice to some parties.

AARP represents the interests of Seniors, not political party's.  Which party serves the interests of seniors in your view?

Check out The Center for Responsive Politics web page and you can decide for yourself.:

The site breaks down contributions by: Totals, Recipients, Congressional Committees, Lobbying, News

It also provides links to bills, Congressional & Senate sponsors (& their donors, bills they sponsor or support), corporations.

Interesting stats. Shows members give to parties, and org. works for Seniors to make life better. That is why we have AARP so they are doing the job we joined for. I would welcome you to the site but it looks like you have been here since 2013.

This post is more than ten years old. Reading it now makes me laugh at the outlandish opposition to the ACA or Obamacare. Let me update this a little bit. The ACA will celebrate its 10th anniversary on March 23 this year. So what has it accomplished and what remains left to do?

First, the ACA has insured millions of previously and otherwise uninsured Americans. The number and percentage of uninsured Americans is much less now than it was a decade ago.

Second, the ACA by covering at no cost to the insured all preventative care as well as immunizations has made a significant difference in the overall health of the people of the United States. How many cancers were discovered in its early stages because of no cost colonosccopies or mammograms?

Third, because of the ACA, hiring and new job creation in the health care sector has taken off like a rocket. In the spring of 2011, I was a participant in a series of community forums on the effect of the ACA on the regional economy of northeastern Ohio around Cleveland and Akron. Representatives of the area health care systems predicted that because of the ACA covering more previously uninsured people, the increased demand for health care services would create more than 10,000 new jobs over the next decade. as of 2019, less than a decade later; that estimated figure was an understatement as more than 12,000 new jobs in health care were created in northeastern Ohio. One individual who I know in the health care field said that if the ACA were to be repealed, that would send the economy into a severe recession.

The ACA is far from perfect and there are many thiings that must be done to make it better. Over the past decade, the Republican party has made its rallying call the "repeal and replace" of the ACA or Obamacare. But despite more than 60 votes in congress to repeal the ACA, it still stands. Despite the Republican party controlling both houses of congress and the presidency, it still stands.

Donald Trump campaigned for the presidency in 2016 promising to "repeal and replace" the ACA with something that would be "terrific" and cost less while covering more than the ACA. But when it came time to produce, there was nothing to show. There were no rabbits in Trump's hat.

I can tell this forum what needs and should be done to make the ACA work better. It can be done if we only had the political will and courage to do that as well as put aside petty party differences and work together rather than promise something that doesn't exist. That will be the topic of another post from me soon.

You talk about all this fluffy good things about ACA (Obama Care). My company plan has increased by 100% in the 7-8 years. So you think all these new health care jobs didn't put additional costs to the health care system?

Yes, AARP is liberal. They are for programs and do not seem to care how they will be paid for....typical of liberals. I do read their magazines which have some good information in them.

Is the management of AARP listening? I listened to my dad talk about AARP for years and thought I would join AARP when I became that age group. Then I see how they are a Democratic arm and lobby for the ratical health care for all and free stuff. It's selfish to take from our kids and grandchildren. Not sure where to go now.

Glad you could get in the "free stuff" erroneous scare phrase.

If you really think it is selfish to "take from our kids" then tell that to tRump and the Republicans for giving excessive tax cuts to Corporations and the wealthiest to the tune of over  $$ 1 1/2 Trillion $$   in debt for our children to be stuck with.

No...they are no t listening. They have become synonymous with "services" for seniors. Only because they are so HUGE.  There is a rapidly growing group for Conservative seniors. AMAC.  I suggest you check them out.  They definitely represent my interests better than the AARP.

Much as I hate AARP, AMAC forums absolutely, positively stink and you know it.

Since healthcare is third when it comes to services (food is first, second is housing).  Why not start with the most important things being "tax based" since liberals like to think government runs everything and charges based on wealth or income?

Those that are destitute would get free homes and free food and others that make good incomes would pay in spades for EQUAL housing and food.  Maybe you should forward my ideas to Bernie.

AARP does represent the democratic party, at least on this forum. They represent liberal seniors. But more than that the democrat party does not represent America. Enter the socialists, open borders, free for all etc. Even the old DFL democrats can't believe what the democrat party has come too! bernie sanders, aoc, the squad.......they represent a desire to totally destroy the basis of the founders and what they did in founding this country. It appears AARP is right there with them. As a senior I will never vote for a socialist, NEVER!

Hogwash. What AARP represents is what is in the best interests of seniors. Period. It just so happens that Democrats also stand for senior friendly policies, but there is no collaboration between them.

Just because the majority of posters on this forum are liberal is meaningless..........AARP owns this site and is kind enough to provide this forum for us to use, but they have nothing whatsoever to do with the ideology of individual members. It's the same as saying a grocery store in a conservative area that is patronized mostly by conservatives means the store represents the Republican party.

Not true. Some Christians do, and they are the real ones. Others back Dictators and kill people to get what they want. Germany was a Christian Country and gave us Hitler. Truth is something that the far right will never know about as Trump leads them down his garden path to oblivion just as all Dictators have over time.
