Three cheers for the one-Party system. That usually works out pretty good - doesn't it.

There'll still be Republicans, but they'll Like Ike, not Rush, or they won't get elected.

There was a time you wanted to ship us all out of the Country, now you just want to send us to reeducation camps. You are softening.

We know minorities, students and urbanites vote democrat and rural folks and oldies vote republican primarily, but what about the suburbanites?  Those folks are from everywhere on the economic scale.

Is America ready for european style socialism?

No European Nation has Government ownership of their major industries, hence no European nation is SOCIALIST. That is a word Republicans have used to scare their base since the 1920's and you'd think the base would have caught on by now.

What do Europeans have that we do not?

1.  A life expectency that is INCREASING - ours is going DOWN.

2.  Affordable higher education for all their kids

3.  A food inspection that protects them from being poisoned for profit

4.  A transportation system that works

5.  A MUCH higher standard of living

6.  A much better health care system

7.  A Tax structure that SHRINKS the income gap each year

8.  A homicide rate that is 1/10th of ours

9.  An average work-week that is getting SHORTER

10. Paid sick leave

11. Paid maternity and paternity leave

12. Affordable daycare

13. A minimum of 2 weeks paid vacation

14. Retirement at or before 65

15. And the reason they have all this: NO REPUBLICANS

Golly gee sarge - who'd want all THAT?

The vast majority of your definition comes down to goodies that someone else pays for.

That is true for EVERYTHING Government provides us so we can exist in a CIVILIZED community. Public schools, police, fire protection, courts, prisons, highways, canals, river navigation, bridges, airports, seaports, sidewalks, sewer systems, water systems, CURRENCY, laws, etc. We have all that because we decided we deserved it, and would pay for it with TAXES. Now civilization has advanced, and there's more things that decency demands we provide our fellow citizens with TAXES. Nothing unusual, simply things every other civilized Nation already GIVES their citizens. Are Americans not good enough for these things, so we must steel ourselves to do with LESS than our Grandparents had available to them? I think not.

Schools, roads, libraries, etc. are not "means tested". Your wealth redistribution" scheme is.

That is not what the "wealth redistribution" fans want.

True, the “wealth redistribution” fans won’t be satisfied until 1% of the population has 99% of the wealth.

There is a recurring myth among the less educated that when taxpayers with greater wealth pay more than those with less it is unfair.  Yet they have no problem with wage stagnation for the middle and lower classes while the wealthy continue to reap more and more financial rewards from our society.

If America is supposed to be designed to reward those who's economic activities improve the economic lives of all Americans.

The current conservative view is a bit more like economic structure of a  pack of wolves.

I didn't say they "had" anything we don't have. I thought an example would make it easier to understand for all... since democrats in our country often use Denmark as an example of "socialism that works".

We have government programs
Most people are happy in the US (except here)

So we agree, in part.

Most Americans (60-70%) are NOT happy with the way things are going and when asked about their satisfaction with the standard of living, we come in 23d place among industrialized Nations. The fact it is very difficult for most folks to even consider leaving the country is NOT an indication they're happy being here.

So Denmark's Government services would be ok with you - Great.

They have:

52 Weeks of PAID Maternity/Paternity leave

5 weeks of PAID annual leave plus 9 national Holidays

Universal, Single payer health care for ALL citizens

There is no tuition for college/university

Students receive $900/month for living expenses while in college

Children receive free day care

A 60.2% TMR on incomes above $59,000.

They are the happiest people on earth (or close to the top) every year because they have used their Government to eliminate the worries that plague average Americans - health care, cost of higher education, finding day care, having more time with family.

We can do much better, but only after we get rid of the neoRepublicans who think we should rely on Corporate Oligarchs for all those things and not our Government so we don't become DEPENDENT on The Good Life which GOPers want to reserve for the top 10%, paid for by the bottom 90%.

Another praising post for "Free goodies and the successful pay for it".
