That would be the European Union, population 503 Million, all of whom have free health care, free college educations, fantastic public transportation, world's best R&D, lower crime rates, shorter workweeks, earlier secure retirement and less poverty than the America the Republicans have created by stopping us from moving in the direction of Europe.

Free? You joke!

I know that many on the radical left think they can get free this and free that.... Is that why you seem to belong to that group?

I see the key element in your post - "FREE". That is just what the radical left wants is FREE, with someone else paying their share! Aren't YOU capable of towing your own dead weight?

Having paid more tax in a single year than you have in your  lifetime I find your comment not only offensive, but absurd. The "someone else" who pays for all those things in the EU is "everybody else", which is why rational people form societies, unlike Republicans who detest social involvement and seek only to destroy anything not built to make a profit for the builders.

Actually, NINE of the EU countries have tuition free college, 6 actually charge a minimal fee, from $188/year in France to $1900 in the Neatherlands. Most of the "free" countries are also "free" for other EU students, so if you can't afford $1000/year in Germany, you can attend in Denmark for nada.
The US average annual cost for a State school in the US is $9,000 in State, $22,000 out of State and $31,000 for private schools.
So no joke, EU countries are "free" in comparison to our system, thanks to Reagan eliminating Revenue Sharing to try and pay for his tax scam.

The European Union just got some bad news from Standard & Poor's.

The whole thing.

In a release on Monday, S&P slashed its outlook on the European Union to "negative" from "stable."

By the EU, S&P means the supranational organization that borrows in capital markets to lend to member states. This includes all 28 members of the EU, not just the 19 that use the euro.

In its release, S&P said its downgraded outlook reflects 3 main points:

  • S&P's expectation that the EU will provide first-loss guarantee support for financing connected to the Juncker Plan (Greece's latest bailout package)
  • Further downward pressure on the average weighted rating on net budgetary contributors to the EU, as indicated by S&P's negative outlooks on the second- and third-most important sovereign contributors, the UK and France (Germany is the largest contributor)
  • The EU's repeated use of its balance sheet to provide higher-risk financing to EU member states (most recently including Greece), without the member states' paying in capital

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

MY COMMENT:

My wife and I just returned from vacationing in Germany during the month of August.  It is becoming very clear why so many of the German citizens are not so happy with the way things are going there.  Many say they are tired of supporting other countries that are not willing to pull their on weight like Greece.

Maggie Thatcher had it right...  The problem with socialism is, eventually you run out of other peoples money.

By the time you get our age, most of us have learned there is no "free anything"...

The rwnj's cannot seem to understand that the other developed countries all spend significantly less on per capita health care, and they get better results. When "socialism" works better than capitalism, we should consider socialism.

A survey the GOPers did after they too kcontrol of the House showed that voters overwhelmingly wanted their new Congress to work on JOB CREATION. That wasn't what GOPers wanted to hear, so they ignored the poll and proceded to obstruct everything President Obama tried to do.

Here's the inescapable reality: Nobody in the Private Sector is going to "add jobs" UNTIL there is unsatisfied demand in the economy to support those jobs. That demand MUST be for increased consumption of goods and services.

Since the average Uberrich 1%er lives like a king on 30% of their current after tax income, investing the 70% in existing stocks bonds and realestate that create no demand for goods and services outside Wall Street, giving more tax cuts to the 1% has done nothing - EVER - to spur increased consumer demand.

However, redirecting some of that 70% into public works - roads, bridges, schools, ports, airports, dams, channels, parks - will create good jobs for Americans. Those jobs have paychecks that will be spent NOT on existing stocks and bonds, but on dinner out, new clothes for the kids, bigger TVs, newer cars, all of which will increase the need for production. At first, that production will come from overtime, then from "outsourcing" and finally, if the demand is sustained long enough, by expanding plant and equipment and HIRING MORE WORKERS.

Had the stimulious program continued, we'd be out of the jrbush Great Recession, and had we paid for it by repealing the Reagan taxscam, we'd have a surplus in the Federal budget. Instead, Republicans killed the stimilus before the increased demand was able to trigger increased production.
