Oil and gas pipelines are a critical piece of Canada's energy infrastructure. ... In a recent Fraser Institute study, we examined, using data from government sources, whether pipelines or rail were safer for transporting oil ... The result was clear.

Crying over 86 gallons ... I am sure the family of the 47 killed in Canada because of oil being transported by rail would not cry over a small pipeline spill.
Here's the thing - none of that petroleum should be moving by rail or by pipeline. The tar sands petroleum is for export, but by now we should be to the point where we do not need such quantities of petroleum. Instead of developing such wasteful sources of energy as the tar sands oil, the US should be well on the way to alternate sources of energy, like wind, and solar, and hydrogen. Here's the other thing, we would be there by now if not for the efforts of the fossil fuel industry to keep the pipelines and rail cars full by financing disinformation, and hiring US legislators to pass the bills their company attorneys write. Here's the third and last thing - to continue to use fossil fuels at the rate we use them now is suicide, and terracide, not anything else. That's why the divestment of fossil fuel companies is gaining steam around the world. Check it out -

kid--And that oil will flow, no matter how hot the planet gets. And the leaks will occur, no matter who they harm. And that is not ok.

Donald supporters don't care about independent analysis, or perhaps they are too uninformed to know anything about their own sources?
==================================================
Donald Supporters...no it's people that believe in what's the safest way to transport oil and there are many independent sources if you care that show that. Its not about Donald. That said nothing is 100% safe..its what is the safest.
You talk about mud spills, etc....grasping at straws
Tribes have a lot of reasons to be mad but they should use their energy to improve things on the Reservations..like high unemployment...health care.. the high rate of alcoholics...housing..education..etc.

Re: DAKOTA PIPELINE LEAK
Fraser Institute is a RW institute, how about an independent study?
Energy Transfer Partners just paid >400K fine.
The construction of Energy Transfer Partners’ new Rover Pipeline through Ohio only began mid-February but the project has already resulted in 18 incidents involving mud spills from drilling, stormwater pollution and open burning that violated the U.S. Clean Air Act.
The Dallas-based company, which is also the operator of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline, has been fined $431,000 by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for water and air pollution violations across various sites in Ohio.

Re: DAKOTA PIPELINE LEAK
Mimi-- Yes, you sound angry, and you have every right to be angry. Many of us are angry as injustice after injustice is perpetrated upon the American people.
It is unfortunate, that the saga of the Dakota pipeline is but yet another tale of these injustices.

Re: DAKOTA PIPELINE LEAK
Mimi-- Intruders from other continents have been stripping Native Americans of their land and security since setting foot on this continent. With the go ahead for the Dakota pipe line, another stripping away of these people's rights and their securities has taken place.
I do not wonder why this leak did not make the news. It seems that we, the American people, have become numb to the fact that America is the land of Native Americans.
Perhaps it is they who should be marching in the streets of North Carolina, protesting the stripping away of their heritage, not white supremacists who , realistically, are no more than interlopers here who spread nothing but hate and fear.

Re: DAKOTA PIPELINE LEAK
@mimi0000 wrote:Oil isn't even flowing through the Dakota Access pipeline yet, but already there's been a leak. The 1,100-mile pipeline, the subject of mass protests will be fully operational June 1, according to Energy Transfer Partners (ETP), the company that built it. But in April, a mechanical failure caused an 84-gallon oil spill northeast of Tulare, South Dakota.
The spill was entirely contained and is considered small. But for environmental groups and members of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, who have been fighting the pipeline since before construction began—and are still in court trying to shut it down—this spill is a harbinger of more to come and an ongoing threat to their drinking water supply.
"This is what we have said all along: Oil pipelines leak and spill," said Standing Rock Sioux Tribe chairman Dave Archambault II. "The Dakota Access pipeline has not yet started shipping the proposed half million barrels of oil per day, and we are already seeing confirmed reports of oil spills from the pipeline."
The petroleum companies know that every pipeline creates leaks and spills, and the Canadian tar sands oil pipeline will be no different.
"University of Nebraska civil engineering professor John Stansbury, drew on pipelines’ history and TransCanada regulatory filings to predict that during the projected 50-year life span of the pipeline, “there would be 91 leaks . . . that could potentially put 6.5 million gallons of tar sands oil in the Ogallala aquifer and essentially contaminate our drinking water.”
He maintained that a worst-case spill in the Sand Hills region could pollute 4.9 billion gallons of groundwater with a “plume” of contaminants 40 feet thick, 500 feet wide and 15 miles long.
