So does bailing out on the TPP really help our position in the growing market in Eastern Asia. Probably not, just gives more control to China?

Another great trump strategy.

But what is the strategy to compete with cheap labor and cheap products...how do we solve that addiction?

@gordyfl

Whenever I read about situations like the one you described I think that the one equation that we are missing is "CHEAP" labor.  We are never gonna compete with CHEAP labor - and I am talking about real CHEAP.

Properous countries are no longer built from the ground up any more as ours was - they are built on the backs of some third world nation wanting commerce at any cost.

Importing slaves doesn't work but working people as slaves in their homeland certainly is done and we seem to jump right in and join them.

I think Trump started out with the plan of tariffs and believed it would at least help bring back jobs.

Since then, he has surrounded himself with advisors who are very much against China's economic rise in the world. This is no longer about "bringing back jobs".

Some American companies are leaving China and moving to Vietnam, Taiwan, Bangladesh and India.

If Trump wants to bring back jobs he'll have to implement an Import Tax - across the board, or raise taxes on U.S. corporations who locate overseas. At this stage, I'm not sure there is anything we can do.

While we devote much of our time, energy and resources dropping bombs, China is actively seeking trading partners - and succeeding:

December 14, 2018
BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s second-biggest steelmaker has signed a memorandum of understanding on a $4.4 billion project in the Philippines that will eventually produce 8 million tonnes of steel per year, according to Chinese state media reports and a statement from the Philippines.
The so-called Philippine Iron and Steel Project represents the biggest industrial investment from China in the Philippines to date.
“This project is very important to our industrial development and will allow us to pursue President (Rodrigo) Duterte’s vision of having a globally competitive integrated iron and steel industry,” Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez said in the statement, which said the project would also create over 20,000 job opportunities.
Jin Yuan, commercial counsellor at the Chinese embassy in the Philippines, described the project as an “important follow-up” to cooperation between the two countries as part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.

(And Boeing just opened a plant in China).

It could be said, but that would be a huge LIE. Tariffs almost always fail and make the economic problem far worse, as opposed to better. Check out what tariffs did to the world in the 1930s.

The only long term benefits of tariffs is the delusional joy it injects into Trump Cult members who reside in an alternate reality where the truth is irrelevant.

No delusional joy, no alternate reality, no huge LIE - just an understanding that they have been part of our international trade picture since 1789 (well before Trump's time).

Simple, we want to write their history for them, to let people in the future know the trump period is not the way to run a country, and how harmful it was to our citizens, our country, our allies, and the world. Hopefully those in the future will not have to suffer from trump abuses forward from this point in time, now. To stop him, and hope that we can undo the damage that he has done.

Was there something in there that I missed about tariffs?

The GOPerLords know tariffs are a terrible "bargaining tool" to use negotiating trade agreements, but they also know Trumpettes are going to believe whatever lil' donny tells them, AND they know when you live on 30% of your AGI, prices changes have no impact on you or your family, so for a couple years they said nothing about Trump's stupidity and the harm it was causing.

Now it's becoming obvious Trump and his family will be relocating from the Government quarters at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave to the ones at Levenworth KY, they have begun to distance themselves from Trump's infantile actions and gross stupidity in the hope some ofthem will survive the election of 2020.

The history of tariffs goes back to 1789. There is nothing in that history about Trumpettes or anyone going to Levenworth (or even Leavenworth) over tariffs.

So - your point is???

It could be said that tariffs are like heart surgery - quite painful if done without anesthesia but with very positive long-term benefits. They are not a goal in themselves but rather a means to an end - better treatment for American corporations and workers in the world marketplace.

Or  - chirp, chirp.
