China Aims to Boost Economic Ties with Germany in Trump Era

HAMBURG, Germany — A new chapter of the love affair between China and Germany is unfolding as the protectionist Trump administration targets both countries with tariffs.

Angela Merkel: "We must really take our fate into our own hands."

“In Germany, we are thinking about new strategic alliances because we have a feeling that we cannot trust our old alliances and that we need to adapt to a new world order,” said Henning Voepel, director of the Hamburg Institute of International Economics.
“In economic terms, China has been making rapid gains on the West for quite some time now, and the United States' apparent withdrawal from globalization is expediting China’s political upsurge,” Voepel said.

China is already Germany's top trading partner — with a volume of more than $204 billion in 2017, putting it ahead of the United States for the second consecutive year. But it is also waging a trade war with Washington.

A poll published by the Pew Research Center this week found that 67 percent of Germans said their country should cooperate more with China, while only 41 percent said the same about the U.S.

Wess Mitchell, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs said that the U.S. “must not see it as a foregone conclusion that countries will automatically remain friendly to America.”

China is investing in trade infrastructure in more than 60 countries worldwide.

China is focused on taking “the lead in world development and reform” together with its European partners, according to Li Yizhong, chairman of the China Federation of Industrial Economics.

He highlighted railway links that now connect 48 cities in China to 40 cities across the E.U.

China is aiming to recreate Marco Polo’s ancient “Silk Road” that connected Europe to Asia through a $1.4 trillion network of modern trading routes.

The sad fact is China is ruled by intelligent men with a clear objective, and we have the toadPOTUS operating as a spoiled 6 year-old with ADHD, supported by the most xenophobic gaggle of GOPers ever to win an election.

Our farmers are NOT going to get back the markets lil' donny's TanTrump of a trade war handed to other suppliers. The only way any rational individual is going to want to move a business to the USA is if they can wheddle YUGE tax abatements and other concessions, which have NEVER paid back the taxpayers who give up the revenues to get the business (well, in a manner of speaking, they DO "get the business", but not in a good way).

The Corporate Oligarchs love GOPers because they make the Oligarchs richer every time they gain power, but they're smart enough to realize all that income and wealth redistribution the GOPers so dearly love is totally contraproductive for growing the economy - all the wealth being created goes to enrich the very rich, none is used to create new demand, and for the last 30 years, the source of new demand - the middle class - has been LOSING real income.

Note to Trumpettes: Yes, things have been going the WRONG way for you and yours for 30 years, but it has NOTHING to do with Globalization, Automation, Affirmative Action or Civil Rights. You havent gotten a real raise because YOUR BOSS DECIDED NOT TO GIVE YOU ONE. The really good paying jobs did not go to some Commie slave in Asia because of OSHA or high taxes. Your boss sent them there because Republicans PAID HIM TO DO IT with tax incentives.

You want your kid to have a chance to go farther than you got? NEVER EVER VOTE FOR ANY REPUBLICAN AGAIN. Then and only then, the kid will have a chance.

This is a perfect example illustrating why Tariffs never work. But don't tell that to any Trump Cult members.
